Addington Gallery hosts one-night event for renowned artist/writer/speaker Makoto Fujimura

Visit Addington Gallery this Saturday, January 22 from 7-9pm for a one-night-only reception event when the gallery will showcase recent work from renowned artist / writer / speaker, Makoto Fujimura

Fujimura’s new work, five major paintings comprising the “Four Holy Gospels” Commission Project, commemorates the 400-year anniversary of the King James Bible.  The commission is an illustrated manuscript published by Crossway, just released in January 2011.  The leather-bound English Standard Version of the Bible is printed with a six-color metallic process and comprises the four Gospels designed and illustrated by Fujimura.

Five major new works, painted in the artist’s Manhattan studio, will be the volume’s main images, making this the first such manuscript to feature abstract contemporary art in lieu of traditional representational illustrations. It is this unprecedented marriage of a modern, usually secular art form with ancient scripture that most interests Fujimura, who aims to depict "the greater reality that the Bible speaks of… for the pure sake of integrating faith and art in our current pluralistic, multicultural world." (from Press Release by Crossway Publishing)

To learn more about the artist, watch a video on the making of this series here, and visit Fujimura’s website: www.makotofujimura.com.

The artist will be present to speak about the work during the reception, and the commissioned book will be available.  Refreshments will be provided; Street parking is available.

Reception: Saturday, January 22: 7-9pm
