Beyond its mainstream galleries, Chicago has a diverse, renowned community of alternative or project spaces located in unconventional spaces. Many spaces are completely artist-run, and they can be found in apartments, basements, lofts, and garages - or places no one has even thought of yet. Many contemporary artists have gotten their start in these unusual venues, and much of the programming offered features performance art, film/video screenings, readings and lectures. Some spaces are not-for-profit, and some are commercial. And many have limited hours, so call ahead.
Studios + Art Centers Studios + Art Centers
Artist studios are the real workplaces of Chicago's creative community, and the opportunities to visit studios and see artists at work are exciting and unique. Many studios are concentrated on the city's north side as well as throughout Pilsen. Many artist studios are located in the same building or art center and host regular open studio events. Contact info is correct as of posting time but can change frequently. We recommend you call studios & artists prior to visiting. The following is just a sample of these spaces, from small, avant-garde studios to large-scale centers housed in historic buildings. Go visit and take a tour, meet locally working artists, and become a part of our unique art community.
