3rd Midwest Open

Woman Made Gallery (WMG) is pleased to present its “3rd Midwest Open,” an exhibition juried by Mia Lopez. From submissions by female-identified artists residing in the Midwest, Lopez chose 32 works by 27 artists.

In her juror statement, Mia Lopez writes: “I was inspired by WMG’s decades of supporting female-identifying artists through refreshing and inclusive exhibitions. Though the selected artists represent a wide variety of perspectives and approaches, they are unified via thoughtful consideration of form and content. From figurative paintings to conceptual photography, abstract sculptures, and myriad media in between, this annual exhibit demonstrates the incredible diversity of artistic practices in the Midwest.”

Li, Cristina Marquez, Elsa Muñoz, Lindsay Olson, Anna Petersen, Natalie Pivoney, Mary Porterfield, Simone Quiles, Christine Rabenold, Shelby Rodeffer, Jolanta Soares, Nadia Stiegman, Crystal Tursich.

Juror: Mia Lopez is Assistant Curator at the DePaul Art Museum in Chicago, where she works on exhibitions, publications, and public programs focused on expanding the art historical canon. At DPAM, she has contributed to numerous projects, including the exhibitions “Remember Where You Are,” “Eric J. Garcia: The Bald Eagle’s Toupee,” and “Barbara Jones-Hogu: Resist, Relate, Unite.” Lopez was previously Curatorial Fellow for Visual Arts at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where she assisted with the exhibitions “International Pop” and “Art at the Center: 75 Years of Walker Collections.”

Lopez completed dual Masters degrees at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Modern and Contemporary Art History, Theory, and Criticism and in Arts Administration and Policy. She also has a BA in Art History from Rice University. She has interned and worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, DC), the Contemporary Art Museum Houston, and the Museo Alameda in San Antonio. Lopez is a 2012 alumna of the Smithsonian Latino Museum Studies Program and a 2016 alumna of the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures Leadership Institute. Her writing has appeared in publications by the DePaul Art Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum Houston, the Walker Art Center, Prospect New Orleans, and Arte Público Press.
