Heritage Auctions is proud to bring a rare and important Isamu Noguchi marble-topped table to market this November. Join us as we celebrate this masterwork of 20th century design and its legacy of stewardship by a typical American Family. Recently discovered in the collection of a San Diego family with Chicago roots, the table is now enumerated as 809A-4 is the Isamu Noguchi Catalog Raisonné. It is one of only four known examples of the model sculpted by the artist, featuring a biomorphic table top, individually shaped wood legs, and a “well for foliage”. According to an internal memo held in Herman Miller’s archives, this example was debuted at their showroom in Chicago’s Merchandise Mart on July 5, 1948. The table was subsequently acquired by an employee of Marshall Fields, the Chicago-based department store and original proprietor of the Merchandise Mart. It has remained in the possession and care of this original owner’s family until now, providing a central gathering point for decades of holiday celebrations and quiet evenings at home. On November 22, it will find its next home for future appreciation and preservation.
