Originating at Northwestern's Block Museum of Art, A Site of Struggle explores how artists have engaged with the reality of anti-Black violence and its accompanying challenges of representation in the United States over a 100+ year period. Join us for a conversation about the exhibition, its context at Northwestern, and how the issues and questions it explores contribute to a national conversation about racial justice.

Speakers include Alvin B. Tillery, Jr., Director of the Center for the Study of Diversity and Democracy and Associate Professor of political science at Northwestern University; Charla Wilson, Archivist for the Black Experience at Northwestern University; and exhibition curator Janet Dees, Steven and Lisa Munster Tananbaum Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. Conversation moderated by Northwestern Alumni Association president Larry Irving ’76.

Event Speakers include:

Larry Irving is the President and CEO of the Irving Group, a consulting firm providing strategic advice and assistance to international telecommunications and information technology companies, foundations and non-profit organizations. From September, 2009 to July, 2011, Mr. Irving served as Vice President or Global Government Affairs for the Hewlett-Packard Company, the world’s largest technology company. Irving is one of the nation’s leading thinkers on technology and innovation, with extensive experience on Capitol Hill and in the executive branch of the US federal government.

Alvin B. Tillery, Jr., is Director of the Center for the Study of Diversity and Democracy and Associate Professor of political science at Northwestern University. Tillery is a frequent commentator in the national media on diversity, equity, and inclusion issues. He recently briefed the foreign press on the Black Lives Matter movement on behalf of the Biden-Harris administration. Tillery is also the Head of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory at the C Street Advisory Group, which is a multi-service consulting firm that provides strategic advice to corporations, governments, and non-profits.

Charla Wilson serves as the inaugural Archivist for the Black Experience at Northwestern University. Her primary focus is to document the history of Black students, faculty, staff, alumni, and organizations at Northwestern. She also supports outreach, curatorial services, education, and reference for the McCormick Library of Special Collections & University Archives. She holds a degree in American Studies from Scripps College, graduate degrees in History from California State University San Marcos, and Education from Claremont Graduate University.

Janet Dees is the Steven and Lisa Munster Tananbaum, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University and holds affiliations with the Department of Art History and the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research. Prior to her appointment at the Block, Dees was curator at SITE Santa Fe, where she worked since 2008. Dees was a part of the curatorial team for Unsettled Landscapes, the inaugural SITElines: New Perspectives on Art of the Americas biennial (2014).  She is the recipient of a 2018 Curatorial Fellowship from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts to support the development of A Site of Struggle: American Art against Anti-Black Violence (2022).
