Alien vs. Citizen draws from the MCA Collection to explore how an individual's value is understood in relationship to community, and the social and cultural biases embedded in the ways worth is perceived and measured. With works by Jennifer Bornstein, Sophie Calle, Marlene Dumas, Glenn Ligon, Howardena Pindell, Andres Serrano, Yinka Shonibare, Lorna Simpson, and Nedko Solakov, the exhibition places an emphasis on works that encourage active viewing and participation. The exhibition prompts visitors to choose to enter the exhibition from the viewpoint of an 'alien' or a 'citizen,' inviting them to embody diverse narratives of social worth and challenge the mechanisms that factor into social belonging.
