Happy Returns (Tom Burtonwood and Cody Norman)
Man Bartlett's practice is a mixture of traditional media, digital media, and performance, all of which emphasize the philosophical difference between perceptual knowledge and reality and how this manifests in the interaction of technology and culture. Bartlett is concerned with action and repetition and "the manipulation of the relationship of a medium to itself." “At a Certain Point” is a series of new ink and graphite drawings, in a return to an analog approach as a respite from the relentless march of technology in an era of tremendous upheaval.
Happy Returns is a collaborative partnership between Tom Burtonwood and Cody Norman which attempts to redefine the historic tension between the handmade and the industrially produced object. Both artists are adept at cutting edge technologies in 3D printing, robotics, and programming; and here they use these mass production technologies to create one of a kind objects with a nod to historic precedents. Happy Returns is both a play on “returning” or recycling physical materials such as plastic or paper and on “returning” code for controlling robots and similar tools.
