Artist Talk: Spencer Hutchinson and Alex Wilson

Wednesday, Sep 25, 2024 7 – 8 pm

3851 West Fullerton Avenue, Chicago, IL 60647

In 2023 Spencer Hutchinson and Alex Wilson collaborated on a series of artworks. Each artist started with a set of paper to which a base layer was applied. The two then exchanged sets and applied an over layer to finish. They then went through a process to select final works which were divided into two sets of thirteen pieces each. The sets, titled CHOICE and COMPROMISE, make up the total work of THIRTEEN + THIRTEEN.

Plans were made to exhibit the project along with other work by each artist and to produce a limited edition printed portfolio of THIRTEEN + THIRTEEN. Tragically, Spencer died unexpectedly on April 21, 2024. This had a deep impact on those close to him, the art world and Chicago, not to mention the collaboration. Spencer is remembered and his work continues to have an impact.

Part of his legacy is the exhibition of THIRTEEN + THIRTEEN at Agitator gallery. All of the selected works from the CHOICE and COMPROMISE portfolios will be on display. Alex has chosen thirteen pieces from the sets that he has reproduced in multi-paneled enlargements that will also be exhibited. In addition, individual work by both Spencer and Alex will be presented along with the limited edition print portfolio and other items by the artists.

Spencer Hutchinson was a founding member of Agitator Gallery. We mourn his passing and celebrate his life and work.

In addition to the opening, the exhibition will be available to view during Gallery Hours on Sunday September 22 from 1-4pm. There is an Artist's Talk scheduled for Wednesday September 25 starting at 7pm and there will be a closing reception Saturday September 28, 6-10pm, with a multimedia performance by Tina Lafeuve and Sara Zalek.
