Within layers of condensed mapping, Blake Aaseby balances a push and pull of painted planes, documented line-work, and recalled shapes in order to form convoluted re-tellings of past events. His work aims at creating maps to a landscape he finds is both fading and forming, one that rests between the past and present. Aaseby’s under-paintings are quickly lost to a thick layer of oil, only to be uncovered with a carved network of lines. Each mark begins to add and subtract, transforming the prior while simultaneously giving a foundation for the next. With his meticulous and futilely mapped paintings, Gather Round is a collection of stories from the mundane to the remarkable.
