Curator-Led Tour: A Tale of Today

A Tale of Today is the Driehaus Museum’s contemporary art exhibition series. It takes its name from The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today, the 1873 book by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner that gave the era its name. The series was conceived as an opportunity for audiences to explore the legacy of the Gilded Age from different perspectives and to understand that history’s place in our experiences today. Previous exhibitions were Yinka Shonibare CBE (2019), Nate Young and Mika Horibuchi (2020), and Theodora Allen: Saturnine (2021).   

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sif Itona Westerberg (b. 1985, Denmark) lives and works in Copenhagen. She graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2014. Westerberg has had solo exhibitions including Immemorial at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum (Denmark, 2021), Fountain at Tranen (Denmark, 2019), and at Gether Contemporary (Denmark, 2020, 2022), among others. She has participated in group exhibitions at Kasmin (2023), Arken Museum of Modern Art (2022), Den Frie Art Center (2021), Bornholms Kunstmuseum (2021), Malmö Art Museum (2020), Oluf Høst Museet (2020), Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art (2020), and the ARoS Triennial (2017). Her works are in the collections of ARoS Aarhus Art Museum (Denmark), the Malmö Art Museum (Sweden), and Ny Carlsberg Fondet (Denmark). She is represented by Gether Contemporary in Copenhagen. This is her first solo exhibition in the United States.

ABOUT THE CURATOR

Stephanie Cristello (b. 1991, Canada) is a Chicago-based contemporary art curator and writer.  She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013 with a Liberal Arts Thesis in Visual Critical Studies. She served as the Artistic Director of EXPO CHICAGO (2013–2020) and is currently the Director / Curator at Chicago Manual Style, an experimental exhibition space, and Curator-at-Large at Kasmin (New York). From 2020–21 she was a Guest Curator at Kunsthal Aarhus (Denmark) and the Malmö Art Museum (Sweden), as well as a Curatorial Advisor to the 2020 Busan Biennale (South Korea). She was previously the Senior Editor U.S. forArtSlant (2012–18) and the Editor-in-Chief of THE SEEN, Chicago’s International Journal of Contemporary & Modern Art (2013–20). Her writing has been published in ArtReview, BOMB Magazine, Elephant Magazine, Frieze, Mousse Magazine, OSMOS, and Portable Gray, among other outlets. Cristello has contributed to numerous exhibition catalogues, including monographs on the work of Lap-See Lam (Bonniers Konsthall / Lenz Press, 2021), Mamma Andersson and Tal R (Kunsten Museum / Malmö Art Museum, 2022), and Alma Allen (Museo Anahuacalli, 2023). She is the author of Theodora Allen: Saturnine (Motto / Kunsthal Aarhus, 2021), Sustainable Societies for the Future (Motto / Malmö Art Museum, 2021), and Barbara Kasten: Architecture and Film 2015–2020 (Skira, 2022). In 2020, she was awarded a publication grant by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.
