Derek Walter's ambitious new body of work, Earth & Ice, emanates from his ongoing concerns for the evolving global warming catastrophe combined with a poetic vision of our lithosphere. By wedging a combination of porcelain and stoneware clay bodies, he captures the natural forces of stratification, revealing the physical history of his works' creation while reminding us of the inevitable and unforeseen consequences of global change. Like a metaphoric boulder with no set position, his work echoes an unthamable timescale while highlighting our responsibliity for our earth's environmental trajectory.
Derek Walter graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a BA in Studio Art. He continued and earned a California Teaching Credential from Sonoma State University. After teaching in China for two years and Japan for an additional two years, he earned an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since 2001, he has been an art professor at Indiana University Northwest. He lives and works in Chicago, IL and has exhibed internationlly for more than 20 years.
