Finding Space & Other Stories

Finding Space & Other Stories is a collection of mixed media assemblages in artist Michael Liweski’s ongoing series examining the societal state of “house and home” – and beyond. The exhibition explores having to leave home and witnessing one’s past amidst a backdrop of intercontinental migration, massive pollution from plastic overuse, and global political unrest. The search for belonging is a central theme, while individual pieces present their own narratives.

Tinker Toys appear prominently throughout the works and sparked Liweski’s initial inspiration, as he started playing with them to troubleshoot a piece in another series. The smell and feel of familiar wooden wheels and colored sticks brought back a flood of childhood memories which ultimately compelled Liweski’s use of the toys in future projects, adding a layer of nuance to their affect.

Finding Space & Other Stories presents the universal experience of moving forward while looking back, and of unpacking and re-examining once at a new destination; moreover, the exhibition reminds us that, despite adversity, “finding space” is often possible.

Finding Space & Other Stories will be exhibited in the Second Atrium Floor Gallery of the Art Center. Opening reception is free and open to the public.
