FLXST Contemporary is pleased to re-open with our first group summer show The Young and the Restless. The group show brings together five emerging contemporary photographers from Chicago and Brooklyn who capture what it feels like to experience and navigate the current moment. Organized before the full force of the COVID-19 pandemic and the protests against institutionalized racism, the photographs in the show, in very timely ways, resonate deeply with issues of community, identity, and the challenges of visibility. The photographers’ subjects range from the performance of race through an avatar, the contours of gender through manual labor, the constitution of womanhood through rites of passages, and the white genderqueer intimacy through objects and bodies. The Young and the Restless centers the anticipation, anxiety, and yearning of the photographers and their subjects who have found themselves at the here and now, as they attempt to make sense of the seemingly fractured worlds that they (and we) all inhabit. We are delighted to present the photographs of Samantha Cabrera Friend, Chanel Matsunami Govreau, Danny Hwong, Ty Healey, and Colleen Keihm.
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 27, 5:30-8pm (face masks are required)
