Artist talk and documentary screening with artist Margot McMahon and filmmaker Rana Segal

Catacombs Gallery

Dedicated on June 7th, 2018, the Oracle of Bronzeville is the first sculpture of an African-American woman in a Chicago public park. Artist Margot McMahon created the bronze portrait of Pulitzer Prize winner and Illinois poet laureate Gwendolyn Brooks to educate about Brooks’s life and legacy. The artist talk also features a screening of filmmaker Rana Segal’s short documentary Gwendolyn Brooks: The Oracle of Bronzeville, shedding light on McMahon’s process and her three-year effort to complete the Gwendolyn Brooks monument.

This event is presented in conjunction with Margot McMahon’s exhibit Cultural Communities: Chicago Writers and Beyond. The exhibit runs from August 2 to September 13, 2024. For more information, go to: www.epiphanychi.com

Project partnerships include The Chicago Literary Hall of Fame, The Poetry Foundation, and the Chicago Park District. The artist talk and screening is presented in partnership with the Chicago Women’s History Center.
