The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art announces the opening of In Control, an exhibition featuring works by artist Katrina Majkut. The Opening Reception for the exhibition will take place on Saturday, March 9, from 12-4 p.m., and Majkut will be present for its entirety.
Majkut's artwork challenges traditional notions associated with domestic craft, particularly hand-stitched samplers, historically associated with marriage and markers of domestic skill. Rejecting the stereotypical functionality of samplers, Majkut's works confront the lack of representation of women's health and autonomy within this textile practice.
Through her artwork, Majkut delves into the complex intersections of gender, politics, and reproductive health. She highlights the historical significance of birth control and its impact on women's lives, shedding light on the systemic inequalities that persist in access to healthcare and reproductive rights.
The artworks, presented as straightforward still lives, juxtapose the objective commercial packaging of products related to women's health against their politicized underpinnings. Majkut's creation process, rooted in intersectional feminism, narrative storytelling, and collaboration, aims to broaden perspectives and challenge societal norms.
In Control transcends traditional boundaries of the thread medium by incorporating observational painting techniques and found objects, elevating the craft to a platform for political and artistic discourse.
Join us at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art as we explore the multifaceted narratives of women's experiences and the enduring struggle for reproductive rights through the lens of contemporary art.
