Jeff Hirst

Jeff Hirst creates powerful paintings that rarely conform to a traditional square or rectangular format. Each piece is its own shape, and is encountered almost as one might encounter a wall sculpture. With a beveled depth of between 2 and 4 inches, his paintings stand out from the wall, announcing their own volume. Running counter to this overt physicality is the translucent, airy quality of the paintings' surfaces. In Jeff's experienced hands, encaustic (wax and pigment) holds and embodies the light around it: a beautiful effect that acts as a compelling counterpoint to the painting's structural presence.
