The International Museum of Surgical Science’s ongoing “Anatomy in the Gallery” program showcases exhibitions of medically inspired contemporary art in the context of the Museum’s historical exhibits and artifacts. The Museum has exhibited artwork through this program since 1998 in accordance with its Mission: to enrich the lives of its visitors by enhancing their appreciation and understanding of medicine and its relation to the human condition. The Museum supports a commitment to contemporary art and artists through exhibitions and programs that use the frame of contemporary artistic practice to examine new perspectives in medical-surgical science and our relationship to the body. This contemporary arts initiative includes rotating exhibitions of contemporary art, as well as an ongoing Artist in Residence program.&nbsp;The Museum houses four floors of exhibitions on medical history in a historic mansion built in 1917 for Eleanor Robinson Countiss and inspired by Le Petite Trianon in France. Since the 1990s, Scottish-born, artist and researcher Mark Gilbert has innovated portraiture.
