Mark Me, Too is a group exhibition curated by Dr. Rikki Byrd who introduces the concept of “mother marks” in the work of contemporary artists. She defines these marks as gestures or imprints in artists’ work that illustrate difficult histories, reorient ideals of beauty, or foster connections, and resemblances. The concept is inspired by a scene in Toni Morrison’s Beloved, in which Sethe’s mother tells her “you can know me by this mark.” The exhibition will bring together a cohort of artists working across mediums whose work explores concepts of motherlands, mothering, and foremothers who have been erased or who artists draw on to trouble visualizations of the iconic mother figure. Dr. Rikki Byrd is the 2024-25 Radicle Curator-in-Residence at Hyde Park Art Center.
