Phantasmagoria is a solo exhibition of the work of Chicago-based artist Mikey Mosher. This exhibition features a variety of light-based installations as well as a number of hand-cut collages and lenticular prints. Throughout the 19th century, ‘phantasmagoria’ was a form of theatrical horror show involving early projection technology, often incorporating frightening imagery of spirits, skeletons, and demons. Because of the unfamiliarity with this technology, these shows often elicited dramatic responses from crowds, causing many viewers to think that they were witnessing spirits. Mosher positions the mediums of projection, stereography, and collage as a means for himself and his audience to reflect on the frightening realities underlying American society. The works also use this format to comment on the contemporary American relationship with technology and its intersection with labor, commodification, mass media, and spirituality.
