Celebrate the launch of the companion booklet to not all realisms: photography, Africa, and the long 1960s during this roundtable discussion that foregrounds the essays and contributions of UChicago faculty.
Join faculty writers Adom Getachew (Neubauer Family Assistant Professor of Political Science and the College), Emily Lynn Obsorn (Associate Professor in the Department of History and the College), Kathryn Takabvirwa (Assistant Professor of Anthropology and of Social Sciences in the College), and Natacha Nsabimana (Assistant Professor of Anthropology) in conversation with guest curator Leslie M. Wilson. The discussion will touch on the work of Ernest Cole and Sam Nhlengethwa, decolonization and the struggle for national independence in West Africa, transformation, and an expansive yet diverse body of photography.
The evening begins with a semi-directed close looking exercise in not all realisms, followed by the roundtable discussion and open Q&A. After the discussion, enjoy light refreshments in the Smart Museum of Art’s reception hall.
Presented by the Feitler Center for Academic Inquiry at the Smart Museum of Art and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA).
