Pająki (pah-YONK-ee / spiders)

Artist Talk, Workshop & Closing Reception

Friday, December 13, 2024, 6 – 9 pm

Join Andrea Jablonski for the exploration of Polish pająki. Vibrant folk mobiles crafted from straw, paper, and feathers, pająki are rich in history and symbolism, traditionally hung in homes during winter to spin gently in the breeze and ward off bad luck and evil spirits. Rooted in Slavic rituals marking the winter solstice and spring equinox, pająki celebrate seasonal change while serving as protective ornaments.

This drop-in workshop invites participants to create their own mini pająki at their own pace, learning basic techniques and adding personal touches. Jablonski will also lead a conversation on cultural customs and their artistic influences, offering a hands-on experience steeped in tradition. Larger pająki samples will be on display and available for purchase.

The event also serves as the closing reception for the duo show (is it) Enough?, featuring Andrea Jablonski and Paul Wear. Celebrate the culmination of this dynamic exhibition while exploring the intersection of art, history, and tradition.
