Traditional Echo: Contemporary Pokagon Artists & The Ones Who Came Before
Saturday, May 18 – Aug 25, 2024707 Lake Blvd.
St. Joseph, MI 49085
Traditional Echo: Contemporary Pokagon Artists & The Ones Who Came Before features the work of six Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Artists. Drawing inspiration from their ancestors, the artists will display a diverse array of skills that are rooted in their Potawatomi culture – including beaded masks, millinery, functional ceramics, printmaking, textiles, painting, and sculpture.
Traditional Echo is curated by Jennifer Marcussen, an enrolled citizen from the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, where she works as an archivist and curator for her tribe. Jennifer is pursuing a masters degree in Human-Centered Design and Engineering at the University of Michigan- Dearborn, focusing on user experience design, and a masters of Library Information Science at Wayne State University, focusing on archival studies. Jennifer earned her first BFA from Kendall College of Art and Design in 2015, with a focus on Sculpture and Functional Art. She returned to Kendall and earned her second BFA with a focus on Graphic Design in 2017. She is honored to care for the work of her ancestors in hopes that their stories are carried on through their work and the work of Anishinaabe artists today.
