Hindman’s December 9 Post War and Contemporary Art auction boasts another market defining stellar session of Chicago Imagist works, highlighted by important Jim Nutt and Ed Paschke paintings, both from 1977, as well as an extensively exhibited 1966 Gladys Nilsson Plexiglas painting that was included in the historic second Hairy Who show. Compelling original works by Don Baum, Roger Brown, Phillip Hanson, Suellen Rocca and Karl Wirsum expand and advance the Imagist offerings. In stark contrast and pleasing counter balance to this funky brand of midwestern surrealism, the sale is anchored by exceptional and audacious abstract paintings by Richard Anuskiewicz, Norman Bluhm, Stanley Boxer, Dan Christensen, Sam Francis, Joe Goode, Ron Gorchov, Jules Olitski, Larry Poons, Jack Roht, Victor Vasarely and Chun Kwang Young. The superb aforementioned examples from Christensen, Olitski and Vasarely come from the noteworthy collections of Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri and are being sold along with sensational sculptures by Cesar Baldaccini, Juan Hamilton and Ken Price to benefit the student experience.
