My challenges in making this work are twofold.
One: to create work, in our studio, without using fossil fuels or adding to the demand on for capacity on the electrical grid. Our new shop is powered by photovoltaics and a battery system. Working strictly solar has created limits or parameters in the process of making.
Two: inside of those energy parameters, to create work that challenges and improves my concept of art. For me, still, formal aspects are crucial. I am interested in stretching and manipulating common shapes and objects, adding internal detail and then obscuring access to that detail with surface treatment.
As I work to expand my vocabulary in art, I find these new objects oddly familiar and exciting.
