Mariët Westermann: First Art: Gardens of Eden and the Human Condition
Mariët Westermann, former executive Vice President of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and current Vice Chancellor and Professor of Arts and Humanities at New York University Abu Dhabi, discusses her research around Renaissance and Early Modern gardens. The author of A Worldly Art: The Dutch Republic 1585–1718 (1996) and Rembrandt – Art and Ideas (2000), she is currently preparing an exhibition and book on the Garden of Eden as an idea with varying resonance in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, with significant implications for garden practices in these cultures.
