The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art will be celebrating artists of all backgrounds and mediums with their fourth Maker's Market this weekend December 14th and 15th, 2024. Featuring local vendors, local drink sponsors, and a raffle filled with prizes from local small businesses, the market will be a fun, family-friendly activity to kick off the holiday season.
At the beginning of 2022, UIMA decided to create this series of markets as a way to honor those that persevered despite the difficulties that artists and small businesses faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. By hosting a diverse range of art-makers, from painters to fiber artists to graphic designers and jewelers, the UIMA Maker's Market has worked to center artists who have been able to create businesses out of their art practices.
This event series also draws direct inspiration from their current exhibition Agency: Craft in Chicago from the 1970s-80s and Beyond, which has been years in the making. The exhibition highlights craft's transformative power as a social change and individual expression. The Maker's Market similarly celebrates the ongoing legacy of craft as a profound tool for cultural dialogue and personal identity. Market attendees will have the unique opportunity to view this exhibition while exploring the market, creating a comprehensive artistic experience. Additionally, the Institute is looking forward to further expanding their community by partnering with local businesses and artisans to introduce a new demographic of visitors into their galleries who may not be familiar with UIMA's mission. They are looking forward to welcoming in all first-time visitors as well as their loyal constituents. The market entry price of $5 and the raffle ticket sales will go toward museum operations.
Ticket prices also include complimentary water donated by Open Water and beer donated by Solemn Oath Brewery (while supplies last). Raffle prizes have been donated by All Together Now!, Anelya, California Clipper, Dark Matter Coffee, Heritage, Squasht, V olumes Bookcafe, Wolfbait, and more. Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, local DJ Stafford Hipp will provide musical accompaniment throughout the market weekend, enhancing the creative and communal spirit of the event.
