The pawns were the foot soldiers and the king had a vizier (or advisor) in the place of what we now know as the queen. The game traveled from India through Persia and the Arab lands, up through North Africa until, finally, it landed in Southern Spain with the Moors. Only until 1000 AD did the queen appear on the board. She held little power. Just like the vizier, she could only move one space at a time. Fast forward to the 15th Century, as Queen Isabella of Castile was the most powerful woman in the world, the chess queen evolved to become the most powerful piece on the board.The exhibition traces the evolution of this now-crucial piece that mirrors many of the trials and tribulations of human&nbsp;beings.&nbsp;Intelligence, grace, and elegance are central themes to the show. About Michael Kenna&nbsp;&nbsp;One of the most celebrated photographers in the last century, Michael Kenna's photographs are held in the permanent collections of over 100 leading museums worldwide including the Art Institute of Chicago, Bibliotheque National de Paris, Musee du Louvre Museum, National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., Victoria &amp; Albert Museum, London, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and many more. Michael is also a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Lettres in France.In the beginning, Michael worked as the assistant and printer for the renowned photographer Ruth Bernhard, making prints in her kitchen darkroom, under her supervision, along with endless conversations that shaped his approach to his craft. Michael learned a great deal from Ruth. Particularly impressive to him was the creativity she had with the negatives to achieve compositional and tonal precision. As Michael says, "a good print should demand to be observed, constantly.”Michael has a distinctively unique minimalist quality to the composition of his images. He takes a very deliberative and reflective path for his images enjoying slowly setting up, considering, observing, and thinking before he photographs. He has used the same medium format analog film cameras for almost 40 years and all his images are done on film preferring the “long, slow journey of the sliver medium”. Several of his images are captured on multi-hour-long exposures, loving the long exposures where he waits and contemplates. During long time-exposures, the real can become surreal.What differentiates Michael from so many photographers is that he doesn't just take the photograph Michael makes every print himself, in his own darkroom, burning and dodging to perfect the balance and produce these jewel-like images. This process for half a century is truly unique in its consistency; photographs taken in '70's are indistinguishable from a photograph taken today all glowing to their fullest potential with Michael’s patient, attentive and caring process. With our first group exhibition in three years, we are excited to present this curated selection of artists from around the world to share their viewpoint on the meaning of HUMANITY.&nbsp; And best of all, a percentage of proceeds from the sales of these works will benefit one of our favorite charities, the&nbsp;Chicago Children's Advocacy Center.&nbsp;Having served over 45,000 children, the ChicagoCAC is Chicago's only non-profit organization that&nbsp;brings child protection services, law enforcement professionals, family advocates and healing services under one roof to respond to, treat, and ultimately prevent child abuse.&nbsp;&nbsp;In HUMANITY, time is collapsed and made fluid as events of the past are mirrored in moments from the present. In this extremely divisive moment in history, HUMANITY demonstrates how connected the world actually is. Regardless of decade or locale, global citizens share more commonalities than dissimilarities with images depicting universal themes.&nbsp;From childhood to adulthood, the interior landscape of our psyche, hardships, joys and experiences portray an indomitable human spirit.&nbsp;Although many of these artists have worked in different time periods, speak different languages and have differing belief systems, the imagery espoused in their art remains consistent – love, friendship, faith, joy, ambition, spirituality, the quest for financial security,&nbsp;war and its effects, wealth disparity, civil rights movements, political and philosophical beliefs, as well as figures who serve as symbols of peace and hope.From photography to paintings, sculpture and mixed media, some of the works in the exhibition are documentarian in nature and therefore factual, yet some will generate differing perspectives.&nbsp;Although HUMANITY presents moments in time that most will recognize, images were selected by their ability to evoke distinctive response and emotion.&nbsp;Author James Baldwin’s words echo through the chambers of HUMANITY:​“The precise role of the artist, then, is to illuminate that darkness, blaze roads through vast forests,​ so that we will not, in all our doing, lose sight of its purpose, which is, after all,to make the world a more human dwelling place.”HUMANITY:&nbsp;A SURVEY OF OUR TIMES will be on display until the 23rd of July.
