SAIC Art Auction and A Happening Auction Party

This fall, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) will present the <a href="https://sites.saic.edu/facultysabbatical/">SAIC Faculty Sabbatical Triennial exhibition</a>, featuring a wide range of work across multiple disciplines created by nearly 40 faculty who have completed a sabbatical or other paid leave over the past three academic years. Gallery-based presentations, lectures and events, and a dedicated website represent the research and practices of these SAIC faculty members.“Sabbaticals are often a time for inquiry, experimentation, and production to help faculty sustain their instructional and professional practices,” said Staci Boris, director of exhibitions and curator of the exhibition. “Many of the sabbaticals were impacted by the pandemic, yet the work produced during this time is exceptionally inspiring as faculty embraced the uncertainty, looked to the familiar, and explored new ways of making.”The Triennial, which opens August 31 at <a href="https://www.saic.edu/exhibitions/saic-galleries">SAIC Galleries</a>, and related programs celebrate the unrelenting creativity and resilience of SAIC’s renowned faculty. The exhibition includes several new works that have never been on view, including a painting from Candida Alvarez that will be making its Chicago debut. SAIC Faculty Sabbatical Triennial 

Artadia and the Department of Exhibitions and Exhibition Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago have invited Adrienne Edwards, Engell Speyer Family Curator and Curator of Performance, The Whitney Museum in New York City to be in conversation with Huey Copeland, Arthur Andersen Teaching and Research Professor at Northwestern University for a free online public program.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://artadia.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=473154334dd94da93b5b760bb&amp;id=4c990f28b0&amp;e=46cd983d87">Please click here to RSVP</a>&nbsp;Adrienne Edwards is a curator, scholar and writer. She is the Engell Speyer Family Curator and Curator of Performance at The Whitney Museum and a PhD candidate in performance studies at New York University. Prior to her appointment at The Whitney, Edwards was the Curator at Performa since 2010, and Curator at Large for the Walker Art Center since 2016. Edwards’ curatorial and scholarly work focuses on artists of the African Diaspora and the Global South. In addition to her curatorial practice, Edwards’ is a contributor to numerous exhibition catalogues and art publications including, Art in America, Aperture, and Parkett, among other publications. Huey Copeland is Interim Director of the Black Arts Initiative, Arthur Andersen Teaching and Research Professor, and Associate Professor of Art History at Northwestern University, where he also enjoys affiliations with African American Studies, Art Theory &amp; Practice, Critical Theory, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Performance Studies. His research focuses on modern and contemporary art with an emphasis on articulations of blackness in the Western visual field. An editor of OCTOBER and a contributing editor of Artforum, Copeland has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals as well as in numerous international exhibition catalogues and essay collections. At present, he is at work on two complementary volumes: “In the Shadow of the Negress: Modern Art in the Transatlantic World,” which explores the constitutive role played by fictions of black womanhood in Western art from the late 18th century to the present, and “Touched by the Mother: On Black Men, Artistic Practice, and Other Feminist Horizons, 1966–2016,” which brings together a selection of his critical essays <a href="https://artadia.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=473154334dd94da93b5b760bb&amp;id=af322e181b&amp;e=46cd983d87">The Department of Exhibitions and Exhibition Studies</a>&nbsp;brings to Chicago audiences the work of acclaimed and emerging artists, while providing the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and the public opportunities for direct involvement and exchange with the discourses of art today. The Future of our Plans

What do we mean when we ask for and envision justice? Envisioning Justice shares the work of Chicago artists and communities as they visualize, actualize, and reimagine strategies, policies, and approaches in the service of a society that is just for all. Envisioning Justice

Faculty Projects is an annual exhibition that presents work by SAIC Faculty who have recently completed sabbatical and other leave projects, or who are retiring. By sharing their current work with the School community, faculty can communicate how their research and practices relate to the local, national, and international art and design communities. Featuring work by Christopher Baker, Susanna Coffey, Shawn Decker, Richard Deutsch, Andy Hall, Michiko Itatani, Ginger Krebs, Shaurya Kumar, Kirsten Leenaars, Joan Livingstone, Adelheid Mers, Mary Patten, Kerry Richardson, and Shawn Michelle Smith.Organized by Graduate Curatorial Assistants Tess Haratonik (Dual MA 2020) and Nura Husseini (MFA Viscom 2020).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Faculty Projects

We encounter constellations as pre-determined. But, if we look again they can be reinscribed with infinite variability. Just as we can redraw the lines between stars, we do not have to perceive personal narratives composed of memories, spaces, and times as fixed. The work of the seven artists gathered in A Constellation of Instances invite us to reroute our narrations of reality. The work on view challenges static modes of storytelling that value long dominant perspectives, moving us instead towards a position of dynamic storytelling which emphasizes the need for a multiplicity of perspectives. From this frame of reference, the works acknowledge that circumstances change how we talk about ourselves and the world around us at specific times in our lives.The works in a Constellation of Instances encourage us to conceive personal narration as a subjective construct that can be altered just as it was created. Challenging the qualities that originally made narrative connections meaningful these works ask: How can we assemble stories from the remains of singular viewpoints that reflect our more nuanced reality? And, if our collective reality is the result of the stories we tell ourselves and others, how is it shaped by the events we decide to include or exclude?&nbsp;Featuring work by artists selected through portfolio reviews by the SAIC Exhibitions Committee:&nbsp;Alina Orlov (MFA 2020), Bun Stout (MFA 2020), E. A Constellation of Instances

What does work look like now?&nbsp;What might it look like in the future? How do we make visible work that’s been disregarded or ignored? Re:Working Labor

A leading figure in contemporary film and art, Apichatpong Weerasethakul (SAIC MFA 1997) has developed a singular realist-surrealist style in which the portrayal of the everyday alongside supernatural elements suggests a distortion between fact and folklore, the subconscious and the exposed, and various disparities of power. This new solo exhibition uniquely presents a selected survey of rarely-seen experimental short films and video installations by Weerasethakul.
