<html><head></head><body>By GINNY VAN ALYEAFollowing a 4th of July holiday that blended into a long weekend, everyone is back this week and we have a busy weekend of art to look forward to.There is a lot to see through Saturday, though the bulk of the openings taking place in River North on Friday evening, July 12. Openings also take place on Chicago Ave. in West Town, as well as in Pilsen East. On Saturday you can head to Michigan Ave as well as Ukrainian Village and back to West Town.In River North, the traditional July happening that was a much loved fixture on the art calendar for many years&nbsp;is back,&nbsp;with the third annual <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/events/river-north-art-district">Midsummer Art Walk</a>. Resurrected and reimagined in 2017 by a group of dealers who wanted to reinvent a familiar seasonal&nbsp;energy for a district long associated with art, the event is casual but promises to be a lively evening of mingling in the name of art discovery.Many galleries embrace the spirit of the summer group show, while others are showcasing new work from artists putting on solo shows – some who have not exhibited in years. Both formats invite art collectors and visitors to the city to&nbsp;spend time in&nbsp;multiple districts and&nbsp;explore Chicago's unique visual&nbsp;culture by viewing work created by living artists.&nbsp;Throughout the city galleries have spent time planning this season's bright, largely easy going shows – a final stop before the fall art frenzy opens in early September and continues through the eighth edition of <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/organizations/expo-chicago">EXPO CHICAGO</a>.Our summary of this weekend's highlights is below. My father entered the US illegally to pursue the American dream, whereas my mother was forced to immigrate to the US by my grandmother in order to live a better life. My parents met at an English language class in Chicago. They never learned the language, but they fell in love, and built a life together. Throughout my entire life in the United States we lived in Pilsen, a Mexican American neighborhood. All the storefronts were in Spanish, everyone spoke Spanish, and everyone lived a working-class life. During the summers, my parents would send me to Mexico to avoid the gang violence in my neighborhood. I spent every summer in Mexico until I was 22 years old." Following the death of Ramos's mother and while his wife was pregnant, Ramos and his wife temporarily relocated to his family home in Monterrey, Mexico, when he photographed the people and places who shaped the person that he is now. We're not one to say if one is better than the other, but they're certainly distinct from one in another in important ways. While there is a social attraction to both kinds of fairs, the juried events that attract hundreds of artists to set up a tent and display their own work – usually outside in a park or neighborhood – are geared towards celebrating independent artists by making affordable art accessible and tempting enough for just about anyone to take home. Often these fairs are where a buyer's very first art purchase is made.&nbsp;The next two weekends are ideal chances to experience some of the city's oldest, and in fact most popular, local art fairs. The fairs coming up can each boast more than 60 years of history, testaments to how loved and how successful they have been in their communities.&nbsp;More fairs and markets take place through June and into July. Early Summer Shows Offer Art in Chicago, Evanston and Wisconsin

This weekend&nbsp;offers the chance to also view and appreciate antiques that are once again new and to consider the many ways that they can inform much of what we admire in current visual trends and practices.&nbsp;It was not long ago that Chicago was without a major antiques&nbsp;show on its cultural calendar,&nbsp;and since Dolphin Productions launched the fair in 2017 it has continued to mature and give Chicagoans a chance to once again host a splashy international gathering that features treasured art and antiques from the past alongside newer modern pieces that attract a younger, style savvy audience.&nbsp;Running through Sunday&nbsp;the show highlights fine antiques and artworks reflecting a variety of design periods from more&nbsp;than 75 national and international exhibitors. The show, the only one of its kind in the city all year, is not to be missed, largely because of the opportunities to learn and appreciate treasures that are not often on view but also for the chance to be among so much history as well as beauty.&nbsp;Proceeds from ticket purchases and sponsorship of Thursday's <a href="https://wbnorthwestern.org/event/artshow/">Opening Night Party</a> benefit programs and patient care initiatives supported by The Woman’s Board of Northwestern Memorial Hospital – including the Board’s most recent major commitment to fund the study of collaborative mental health care in Northwestern’s primary care clinics in Chicago and help improve access to mental health care in the community. <html><head></head><body>By GINNY VAN ALYEA&nbsp;The&nbsp;first week of April was a busy start to 'spring' openings, but now that new shows, for the most part, no longer happen on just a single big busy night in the city – they're happening nearly every weekend in various neighborhoods – there are actually more opportunities to spend time visiting smaller groups of galleries at once, rather than making the mad dash to see 15 shows in one night or having to see some shows at the expense of others.&nbsp;Friday night, April 19, is a chance to visit the five spaces – at 1709–1711 W Chicago Ave – that cemented West Town as a new and <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2018/5/a-new-westward-migration-galleries-move-in-search-of-space-and-community">growing gallery destination</a> and to see the strong range of art that is being exhibited.&nbsp;This is the season after the first big openings of the year and before the summer group shows. Both blastulas and plastics can be deformed in any direction, but plastic differs from these pre-embryonic forms in that it is materially permanent and impenetrable. Inspired in part by his great interest in early modernist interior design and the continuum of designed objects, the pieces in the exhibition were first imagined as interventions in historical interiors, considering how they would activate in these environments and in turn, the space transformed by their introduction. These objects are conceived to participate in everyday functions of support and furbishing, yet they also possess autonomy outside of their utility.&nbsp; Leinberger’s continued interest in the monolith is evident throughout the exhibition. Their single forms lack signifiers of “furniture” other than their distinctly domestic scale and implied function. Their existence is not substantiated by the functionality, like a readymade who changes in context, these objects lend themselves to all kinds of speculative use. <html><head></head><body>By GINNY VAN ALYEA&nbsp;Friday, March 1&nbsp;begins a weekend of fresh openings in galleries around the city, as many spaces feature their first exhibitions since the year began. A host of artists have used our collective hope for renewal and warmth, as well as fresh air and light, as inspiration for their latest work.&nbsp;River North opens many new shows as part of its commitment to coordinating receptions on the first Friday of the odd months.&nbsp;Several spaces in West Town also open dynamic shows along Chicago Ave.&nbsp;Additionally, new art may be found on both ends of the city, the south as well as the north, and on both days of the weekend, Saturday, March&nbsp;2 and Sunday, March 3, making this an altogether Chicago and art-filled weekend.&nbsp;Some highlights are listed below, and our <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar">full calendar</a> may be viewed&nbsp;here.&nbsp;And of course the art doesn't stop after the openings are over. Beginning in 1994 Shellabarger has executed over a dozen performances on solstices and equinoxes. Marking the longest and shortest days of the year, or those days with equal amounts of light and dark respectively, the duration of his art-making activities are often influenced, or even determined by, these celestial events.
