My children are finding out that traveling with mom involves seeking out art – often it’s work-related, but it’s also because seeing art in other places is eye opening. Despite some protests on our most recent trip, the kids are coming around to the idea that there is a reason why most tourists like to visit museums (and galleries). Personally, I am interested in exploring what distinguishes art communities around the country, and of course comparing them to home. Art-wise, Chicago has everything going on here. It really does. The city counts dozens of world class institutions, and there is a long history of a multi-generational collector base that built these institutions. We also have scores of smaller, independent spaces supporting artists in the early stages. Some of the world’s most famous artists today are either from Chicago or started and built their careers here. Multiple schools and programs in the area are hard at work nurturing the next generation. The City dedicates resources to an evolving collection of public art (a proven tourism success). And still, it’s like when your mother tells you you’re the best. Sometimes, it means more when someone else tells you the same thing.&nbsp; Every few years the topic of Chicago’s national art reputation bubbles up. Someone talks about that other city where things happen–when anyone there takes note or writes about Chicago, somehow it means more. It’s like really being seen. But first Chicago needs to see itself. There is so much here, and we need not be overlooked.&nbsp; * I started working at CGN in 2002. I have spent this last year approaching an unusual milestone. As of 2024 I’ve spent half of my life–all of my adult years–working on this publication. It’s an interesting thing traveling to other parts of the country and visiting arts communities, only to come home to be enamored with the legacy Chicago has built over the decades. As we head into 2025, I hope each of you will champion art close to home. It’s a new year, and there is new art. I encourage you to seek out undiscovered spaces and reconnect with the ones you already know. And be sure to take friends with you and introduce them to CGN and this exciting, dynamic world right here in Chicago. These include a continuation of the Chef Collaboration Series, originated by Chef Jason Hammel, and a new lager launched in partnership with Marz Brewery. The new dish for the Chef Collaboration Series, which focuses on spotlighting local culinary talent, will be a Duck Confit Salad by Chef Ryan Brosseau of French-Canadian restaurant Dear Margeret. The salad features a diverse array of ingredients including white beans, roasted pumpkin, demi-glace, pickled onion, arugula, Banyuls vinaigrette, fines herbes, and cured duck yolk. This salad will be available starting on December 3, 2024 for both lunch and dinner. Starting in December, Marisol will also serve a limited-edition black lager, titled The End, in collaboration with&nbsp;<a style="color: rgb(29, 65, 160);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://mcachicago.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c24ba7c5a91cefd699dc985e1&amp;id=9f00b0c888&amp;e=95b957c616" target="_blank">McKinley Park’s Marz Brewery</a>. This collaboration is in the spirit of&nbsp;<a style="color: rgb(29, 65, 160);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://mcachicago.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c24ba7c5a91cefd699dc985e1&amp;id=b5ab6f984c&amp;e=95b957c616" target="_blank">The Living End: Painting and Other Technologies, 1970–2020</a>, MCA’s recently-opened exhibition that runs through March 16, 2025. With hints of chocolate and coffee, The End is the perfect beer for cozy winter evenings. The dark lager has a low hop bitterness aroma with a 5.5% ABV. In January 2025, customers will be able to pair this beer with Marisol’s upcoming prix fixe menu in collaboration with Chicago Restaurant Week. Marisol also has spirit-free beverages for those participating in Dry January, including El Cielo, which has lavender, ginger, lime, and tonic, and The Kiss, featuring Seedlip Spice 94, rose mallow, and lemon. Lunch hours are 11 am to 2 pm and dinner hours are 5:30 pm to 9 pm, Tuesday to Friday; brunch hours are 10:30 am to 2 pm, Saturday and Sunday. Photo by Nick Albertson&nbsp;CGN: Your background in architecture implies a tendency to work in a three dimensional format, however your mediums of choice tend to be flat, including digital sketches and wool rugs. What is your process when translating urban architectural inspiration into two dimensional mediums?&nbsp;David Salkin:&nbsp;As a child, I had a fascination for maps and architectural drawings because they gave me a way to "see" a place without physically being there. I grew up studying these flat representations, trying to imagine and "3Dify" them. Over time, I realized that two-dimensional space allows for other ways to understand rhythm and scale that aren’t as evident in the built environment. By thinking about architecture through the lens of surface design, I am looking to capture the patterns and spatial relationships that make cities what they are. It’s not about replicating the experience of three dimensions but about distilling it into a kind of visual code that reveals its underlying geometry — patterns, textures, and proportions — and bringing out the hidden rhythms of a place.&nbsp;I have come to think of my process as “breaking the grid.” It is the moment when I consciously step outside my comfort zone to reimagine and reconfigure the grid of a city to create new patterns that challenge the status quo. In practice, breaking the grid manifests in asymmetrical layouts, unexpected alignments, and dynamic compositions that draw the eye in new and intriguing ways. I experiment with overlapping elements, varied spacing, and irregular shapes, all while maintaining an underlying sense of cohesion and balance. My goal is to create designs that feel fresh and innovative yet still communicate effectively and resonate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1733255542/wgpd5mti40nyeiqudgze.jpg">&nbsp;CGN: Architecture and installation pieces are site-specific, offering a sense of exclusivity. How does this affect your creative practice when utilizing the physical gallery space?&nbsp;DS: It’s exactly that. The studio is the connection between the bespoke object and creative process. My space is open and intentionally inclusive—anyone can walk in and engage with me and the work. I chose my studio space intentionally – to be an active participant in a community of other creative people and programs at the 1709 gallery building. The physical space of my studio lets me experiment and play, grounding my work in the immediate surroundings. And because of my desire to be accessible and open, I like to believe I’m demonstrating a kind of generosity, where I share my interests with others, inviting them to interact with works that range from tactile pieces to conceptual installations.&nbsp;&nbsp;CGN: Your style leans towards modern and postmodernist art with a focus on flatness and geometry. What do you say to those who view modern architecture as the “death of detail”?&nbsp;DS: I think modern architecture and design are misunderstood if they're seen as lacking detail. Modernism, to me, is all about nuance and restraint. The detail is there; it just demands a different kind of attention. Look at the way patterns align or see the texture in a surface — these are intentional choices that speak volumes. Modernism, to me, is optimistic and outward-looking, relying on intentional subtleties that invite you to look closer. Every detail in a modern piece holds meaning without shouting, and that, to me, is where the beauty lies. By contrast, I find that postmodernism veers into irony, as if it's given up on earnestness, detracting from the authenticity of design.&nbsp;In terms of my own work, I think the richness lies in the tension between minimalism and intricacy. Geometric shapes and clean lines invite you to notice subtleties that might be overlooked in more ornate forms. When I strip a design to its essence, I am bound to make every choice a crucial one. And in the process, the detail becomes the experience of form itself rather than a superfluous element.&nbsp;<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1733255542/ux3rpzoawskja2rsq6pg.jpg">&nbsp;CGN: What do you feel are the benefits of creative collaboration, especially in a practice like yours, which involves teamwork in many stages of the process?&nbsp;DS: Collaboration introduces fresh perspectives and expertise that I couldn’t achieve alone. I crave that shared energy, where ideas evolve through dialogue and hands-on exchange. Each person I work with —whether they’re an artisan, a fabricator, or another designer — adds layers to the work that make it richer and more intricate. For example, collaborating with master craftspeople gives me access to a level of material knowledge that’s invaluable. They help transform my designs into something beyond what I could create solo, embedding their own narratives and skills into each piece. As time goes on, I am more aware of the power of collaboration and look to find ways to make it a constant dynamic in my practice rather than episodic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1733255543/qv6ta7gwjig5fw2yycx2.jpg">&nbsp;CGN: Do you have any advice for young artists beginning their professional practices?&nbsp;DS: My advice is to embrace the process of learning and don’t shy away from experimentation. Study everything, including disciplines outside your own. Often, the most rewarding work comes from taking risks, trying new techniques, and challenging conventional thinking. Be present, be curious, and engage with the world around you. Don’t get caught up in trends or in trying to perform for others — authenticity matters more than you think. Don’t get trapped in the digital space; instead, step out and experience things firsthand. Take time to connect, ask questions, and don’t rush through your work. This week, we sat down with her to discuss her educational background and time at The Arts Club.&nbsp;&nbsp;Chicago Gallery News: As both director and curator at The Arts Club of Chicago, it’s almost hard to imagine the depth of your involvement in each exhibition. Are there any areas within your process that you look forward to, or that you find particularly challenging?Janine Mileaf:&nbsp;I find it extremely gratifying to work directly with artists to help them realize a particular project. It is especially exciting when an exhibition takes form specifically around the opportunity to show work in the context of The Arts Club of Chicago. Our long history often provokes new ideas for artists or new ways in which to situate their work. I love when that happens.&nbsp;CGN: As a student of art history, how do you feel your own research and understanding of the art world impacts what you are drawn to as a curator?&nbsp;JM:&nbsp;I come to curation from the point of view of a historian, but I find that this does not necessarily draw me to historical works (although sometimes it does). More frequently, I’m compelled by artists who themselves are engaged in historical or research-based thought. I try not to go after trends, but rather to work with artists whose ideas and objects will endure beyond the moment and who are making things that make me think or feel something new.CGN: In&nbsp;2010, you published&nbsp;Please Touch: Dada and Surrealist Objects After the Readymade.&nbsp;What ultimately moved you to write about the Dada movement, a period which can be difficult to digest in many ways?&nbsp;JM:&nbsp;That is exactly why I wanted to write about Dada! I chose to think about Marcel Duchamp’s readymades and their aftermath because at the time they were conceived, they were understood to be the farthest thing from a work of art–and yet, in the long-run, that very idea is hard to grasp because the object-as-art has become so commonplace. I wanted to look at that difficulty and the gesture of inserting something so problematic into the context of art and figure out what that tells us about the category “art” and its function.CGN: During your time working at The Arts Club of Chicago, has there been an exhibition that stands out to you as a critical learning moment?&nbsp;JM:&nbsp;Our most recent exhibition&nbsp;Haegue Yang: Flat Works&nbsp;has reminded me not to shy away from ambitious projects. Each time I start a conversation with an artist about what they want to make, it is a risk—something of a challenge—to see how the institution is equipped to meet their intentions and to find out what we can do to surpass any limitations. In this project we surveyed work that Yang has been making for 30 years, but that has never been considered as an entity; we fabricated an exquisite display to tell the history of Yang’s most recent series of paper cuttings known as Mesmerizing Mesh; and we published a book that will be distributed internationally by Skira and outlast the exhibition. In the end, The Arts Club provided a venue for the artist to showcase long-term thought processes that are at the core of her practice and to discover the unifying concept that has to do with abstraction.CGN: What advice would you give to those wishing to work on the business side of the art world?&nbsp;JM:&nbsp;I’m sure this sounds trite, but I would say to follow your passion, not the market. The first-floor galleries (Funderburg and Kuller) will showcase over 100 pieces from the museum’s acclaimed Permanent Collection. Galleries will be open Thursday through Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM with free admission sponsored by Lon and Dick Behr, Dean Alan Olson Foundation, and, Rosecrance Behavioral Health. We are also excited to unveil a new children’s art space, “Young Masters”. Art at Amtrak is series of temporary public art works, curated by Debra Simon Art Consulting, and on view at Chicago's Union Station. Part of a rapid expansion of the initiative from New York Penn Station to other Amtrak stations, based on its success, this Chicago debut of Art at Amtrak, which opened October 7, features works by three acclaimed, contemporary artists who live and work in the city: Caroline Kent, Chad Kouri, and POSE (Jordan Nickel). They will remain on view through Summer 2025.&nbsp;&nbsp;One participant is CGN's fall cover artist, Caroline Kent. Kent’s mural, Daydreaming, covers over 40 panels at Chicago Union Station with large, abstract shapes that overlap soft pinks, blues, and yellows with richer shades of dark blue, gray, and deep green. Where these colors intersect, new hues emerge, reflecting the vibrancy of cityscapes. Inspired by various elements encountered during travel—architectures, landscapes, the horizon, sculptures—Kent’s shapes invite interpretation and imaginative associations. The overall mood conveys serene, bright, and sentimental introspection—a reflection of the emotional states experienced by travelers, whether weary or filled with anticipation. The work, entitled Reflection Pools Monument, evokes motion—both up and down, in and out—as the viewer’s eyes roll across its length. The titular “pools”—simple, austere, metallic surfaces—are arranged in flowing, repetitive motion to strike a balance between sophistication and playfulness, a core tenant of Kouri’s practice.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1731092760/trpwcxjidwzqrnw0e6fp.jpg"><figcaption>POSE, Accord, 2024 Digital print on vinyl adhesive film. The photo shoot reminded the artist that the transit hub represents connection, brings people closer together, and ultimately makes relationships possible. He used that concept as a springboard for the nonlinear, bright visual narrative of Accord, which depicts an oversized comic strip bursting from its own panels. The mural boldly engulfs travelers, each enmeshed in a personal journey of their own. Like the characters in Accord, POSE encourages travelers to go beyond what is familiar, explore the world, and connect with others.Art at Amtrak is co-conceived, curated, and produced by Debra Simon Art Consulting. Since Amtrak launched the program in June 2022 at New York Penn Station, it has expanded to Washington Union Station, Moynihan Train Hall in New York, William H. Gray III 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, and now, Chicago Union Station. Artists commissioned for the program have included William Kentridge, Shahzia Sikander, Derrick Adams, and Joshua Frankel, among many others. This perspective raises essential questions: How do we keep up? How do we avoid repeating history? This is the crux of his exhibition, Robert Longo: An Accelerated History, on view at the Milwaukee Art Museum until February 25, 2025. The survey exhibition is his first solo show in the Midwest in 30 years and a must see.Longo considers his art an act of resistance. As a prominent figure of The Pictures Generation, he challenges us to rethink our assumptions using archetypes of power and authority. Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Margaret Andrea, notes that since Longo began his Destroyer Cycle series in 2014, his work has gained urgency. It serves as a call to attention and action. These works tower over the viewer: a police riot line in Ferguson, the dismantling of a Confederate monument, and the migrant crisis. Longo aims for viewers to experience the exhibition as if walking through a movie. Longo prefers the term hyper-real over photorealistic as his art is not a replication of reality, but images compiled and modified to evoke specific atmospheres. Longo plays with the “truth” of an image. Influenced by John Berger’s Ways of Seeing, Longo prompts viewers to reflect not only on the subject, but on the act of looking itself. How do our backgrounds and the broader historical context influence our perceptions? This inquiry is embodied in Longo’s Dürer’s Solid (2012), which reflects both his drawings and the viewers in the room. The exhibition is punctuated by sounds resembling gunshots; however, this is another layer of subversion—what we hear is the sound of paper ripping as he tears images in Icarus Rising (2019).Longo speaks of making his drawings like a sculptor, employing his classical training, building layers and chiseling away details. This technique invites viewers to scrutinize the works, searching for the artist’s hand. As one draws closer, the hyper-real image dissolves into abstraction. Longo identifies as an abstract artist working representationally, finding kinship with the Abstract Expressionists. As an American, these are his great classical artists of history; his reverence for them is explored through his Gang of Cosmos series.The exhibition culminates in a sobering reflection on American history: colonialism, genocide, a fractured democracy, the opioid epidemic, and the climate crisis. These weighty themes prompt us to consider what actions we can take against current crises and how we can prevent history from repeating its darker chapters. Although the exhibition's weight is palpable, Longo offers glimmers of hope, which he says has two daughters: a fierce anger at the state of the world and the courage to do something about it.
