<h2>Investigation of documenta 14&rsquo;s Shaky Finances Widens to Include Possible Embezzlement of Public Funds</h2>

The German Attorney General G&ouml;tz Wied confirmed on Wednesday, February 14, that the criminal investigation into documenta&rsquo;s officials on the suspicion of embezzlement has expanded. The investigation comes in response to a report issued last November by an independent auditor that included substantial evidence that there were serious failures in how public funds were spent on the recent edition of the prestigious exhibition, which took place in Kassel in Germany as well as the Greek capital of Athens.&nbsp;

<h2>Photos: SUE the T. rex&rsquo;s big moving day at the Field Museum</h2>

SUE the T. rex has some pretty die-hard fans. When the Field Museum tweeted out that the beloved dinosaur would be moving to a new home within the museum&mdash;Alison Laurence immediately bought a plane ticket to Chicago.

She didn&rsquo;t want to miss the first day of SUE the T. rex&rsquo;s month-long moving process at the Field Museum on Monday afternoon. Alison, from Evanston but living in Cambridge, Mass., was excited to see researchers take apart SUE because it happens to be directly related to her field of study. She&rsquo;s working on her PhD at MIT focusing on how extinct animals are displayed in museums and institutions.

<h2>The Artist JR Will Plaster the Facade of This Year&rsquo;s Armory Show With the Faces of Immigrants</h2>

On the heels of JR&rsquo;s recent&nbsp;Oscar nomination&nbsp;for&nbsp;Faces Places, a documentary he co-directed with filmmaker Agnes Varda, the French street artist is already working on his next project: an ambitious public art installation for the Armory Show. For the work, titled&nbsp;SO CLOSE,&nbsp;JR is plastering the exterior of Pier 94 with photographs that meld archival images from Ellis Island with portraits of Syrian refugees.

The massive installation has been organized by art dealer Jeffrey Deitch and Artsy, and is a sequel of sorts to &ldquo;Unframed,&rdquo; the artist&rsquo;s&nbsp;2014 photo installation on Ellis Island. For that project, JR took over the former immigration facility&rsquo;s&nbsp;abandoned hospital complex, pasting enlarged&nbsp;photographs of patients onto the buildings&rsquo; crumbling walls and broken windows.

It was the loan denial heard around the world. When the White House requested to borrow a painting by&nbsp;Vincent van Gogh&nbsp;from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in September, the museum&rsquo;s chief curator Nancy Spector kindly declined, but countered with a hum-dinger of a replacement: a golden toilet by&nbsp;Maurizio Cattelan.

After the&nbsp;Washington Post&nbsp;reported the exchange late last month, many applauded her snarkiness, while others&mdash;including a Fox Business host who called for&nbsp;the curator&rsquo;s resignation&mdash;viewed it as highly inappropriate.

Party-line divisions aside, the cause c&eacute;l&egrave;bre sheds light on a history of lesser-known art loans to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. And it illustrates how the Trump Administration appears to be doing things a bit differently than its predecessors.

<h2>The National Gallery of Art Cancels a Chuck Close Show After Misconduct Accusations</h2>

The National Gallery of Art in Washington has canceled a Chuck Close exhibition, planned for May, because of accusations of sexual misconduct that have engulfed the artist in controversy.

Anabeth Guthrie, a spokeswoman for the National Gallery said that museum officials made the decision to cancel the show this month because of &ldquo;allegations of misconduct&rdquo; made against Mr. Close. In December, The New York Times published a report that Mr. Close had asked women who visited his studio to undress and made unwelcome explicit comments.

&ldquo;We have never made a decision to cancel a show because of allegations of this kind before,&rdquo; Ms. Guthrie said.

For the last four decades, Chicago-based Terra Foundation has quietly gone about its business of supporting American art locally and globally. This year, it&#39;s making a bigger splash.

Terra is spending $6.5 million on Art Design Chicago, a yearlong celebration of American art and design taking place at 60 cultural organizations around the city. Art Design Chicago took five years to pull together and has a total cost of about $8 million. It has connected Terra with about 15 new organizations, among them the&nbsp;South Side Community Art Center,&nbsp;which received a $50,000 grant from Terra for &quot;Change the Canvas, Change the World: A Landscape of Cultural Discovery,&quot; opening at the Bronzeville center Nov. 3. Masequa Myers, executive director, calls the grant &quot;big money&quot; for the center and adds that the collaboration with Terra carries considerable marketing potential. &quot;It really raises the bar for us,&quot; she says.

Back in Chicago during a bone-chilling week or so during the holidays, he was eager to hear about local politics but mostly he talked about what it has been like working in Paris on the second season of the Amazon Video series&nbsp;&ldquo;Patriot,&rdquo;&nbsp;written and directed by Chicago&rsquo;s Steve Conrad. &ldquo;I think I&rsquo;m the only guy who goes to Paris and loses 14 pounds,&rdquo; he says.

In the show, Fitzpatrick plays a character named Jack Birdbath, a mysterious and disgraced security guard. If you watched any episodes of the series&rsquo; first season (available still on Amazon) you might have missed him. His was a small role but one that Fitzpatrick believes might have helped save his life.

The Obama Foundation has released an updated plan for its Obama Presidential Center in Chicago&rsquo;s Jackson Park after listening to community concerns for the better part of eight months. The revisions&mdash;which include a taller, redesigned main tower&mdash;come just days after the center&rsquo;s controversial above-ground-parking structure on the neighboring Midway Plaisance was scrapped in favor of an entirely underground garage.

A Glencoe house that is one of a cluster of seven designed by Frank Lloyd Wright sold for less than its seller paid for it a dozen years earlier. Built in 1914 as part of the Ravine Bluffs subdivision, the house on Meadow Road sold for $752,000 on Jan. 5. The seller bought the house in 2005 for $790,000.

<h2>The Authenticity of Modigliani Paintings Questioned Once Again</h2>

ROME &mdash; The tormented artist Amedeo Modigliani is beloved both by art aficionados and forgers. Now, an art expert has written a report, leaked by the Italian news media, for state prosecutors that says a third of the works in a popular Modigliani exhibition last year in Genoa, Italy, are fakes.

The expert, Isabella Quattrocchi, said that seven drawings and eight oil paintings by Modigliani, as well as six oil paintings attributed to his friend and sometime collaborator, Moise Kisling, were not authentic. The art works were lent by private collectors and museums in Italy, Switzerland, Israel, Argentina and the United States.

News from Around the Art World: January 15, 2018

As we settle into a new year, we are looking&nbsp;forward to all that is quickly filling a busy and varied arts calendar. There are already many&nbsp;new events and exhibitions opening, and there are more&nbsp;celebrations to attend and&nbsp;galleries and museums to visit each week.&nbsp;&nbsp;We are especially grateful for the spotlight this year on artists connected to Chicago, as you will see in the list below, and we are eager to explore new areas of focus, such as design and&nbsp;new media. Other exhibitions of note celebrate the dynamism of the art world&nbsp;&ndash; the City&#39;s Year of Creative Youth aims to inspire and engage a whole new community and generation of artists. Art Design Chicago brings together 50 partner organizations to mount dozens of exhibitions and special programs.&nbsp;

We noted a few months ago that Chicago was having a major cultural moment, but now we see that the moment is not fleeting &ndash; it is continuing and building. CGN will cover each of these events more in depth as they open, but for now, we hope you are making your own art &#39;wish-lists&#39; like we are and that you look forward to a year filled with art and creativity. <h3>City of Chicago&#39;s&nbsp;Year of Creative Youth</h3>

Hot on the heels of the Year of Public Art, the focal point of the City of Chicago&rsquo;s Year of Creative Youth will be a Creative Youth Festival, held in Millennium Park on September 22 and showcasing teen artists in dance, theatre, music, spoken word, and the visual arts. The program offers teens performance opportunities at many Chicago festivals and partner events.&nbsp;

<h3>The Field Museum Turns 125</h3>

On October 26, 1893 Marshall Field donated $1 million for the establishment of a museum to house the Columbian Exposition. 125 years, and three name changes, later, the Field Museum of Natural History remains a premier natural history museum, attracting two million visitors a year. &nbsp;

The Field Museum is celebrating their 125th anniversary by revamping SUE the T. Rex and moving the cast up to the The Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet, the museum&rsquo;s most popular exhibit.&nbsp;

<h3>Gertrude Abercrombie: Portrait of the Artist as a Landscape at Elmhurst Art Museum</h3>

Gertrude Abercrombie: Portrait of the Artist as a Landscape at Elmhurst Art Museum is organized by Jenny Gibbs and coordinated at the museum by Lal Bahcecioglu. Abercrombie (1909-1977) was a painter based in Chicago who created surreal and dream-like imagery. She developed her own unique style and color palette, and explained the images of her work with &ldquo;It is always myself that I paint.&rdquo; The exhibition will include 40 of the artist&rsquo;s enigmatic paintings of spare interiors and illusionary landscapes&mdash;which have been referred to as &ldquo;psychic self-portraits.&rdquo;

Idiosyncratic, charming and irascible, Gertrude was presciently contemporary. Referred to as &ldquo;the queen of the bohemian artists,&rdquo; Abercrombie entertained many jazz musicians at her home at parties on Saturday evenings and jam sessions on Sunday afternoons, including friends Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Rollins.

<h3>Nina Chanel Abney: Royal Flush at the&nbsp;Chicago Cultural Center &nbsp; &nbsp;</h3>

Nina Chanel Abney: Royal Flush is the first solo exhibition in a museum for the Chicago-born artist. The exhibition is a 10-year survey of approximately 30 of the artist&rsquo;s paintings, watercolors and collages. Abney, born in 1982, is at the forefront of a generation of artists that is unapologetically revitalizing narrative figurative painting, and as a skillful storyteller, she visually articulates the complex social dynamics of contemporary urban life. The exhibition is organized by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts to the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University.

<h3>Richard Hull at Western Exhibitions</h3>

School of the Art Institute Chicago graduate Richard Hull will exhibit new work at Western Exhibitions this spring. Hull calls his recent paintings and drawings &ldquo;stolen portraits.&rdquo; His crayon drawings, which respond to the paintings, in particular, are portraits in the form of hairdos, each one expressing a distinct visual personality rather than a representation of a particular individual. This quasi-figurative direction started with, of all things, drawing a horse&rsquo;s tail for an exquisite corpse in a performative collaboration with MacArthur award-winning saxophonist and composer Ken Vandermark and the illustrator and printmaker Dan Grzeca. In Hull&rsquo;s portraits, horsetails now resemble looping flower petal forms &ndash; building blocks for portrait-like structures. The bulbous loops are accentuated by minute, repetitive, often concentric curves within the large masses.

Yes, this exhibition will make everyone over 30 feel really old. Future generations will not know life in&nbsp;a pre-digital world. This summer, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago presents the landmark exhibition I Was Raised on the Internet, an immersive and participatory show examining the impact of the internet and how it has changed the way we experience the world. With nearly 100 interactive artworks from 1998 to the present,&nbsp;I Was Raised on the Internet&nbsp;spans photography, painting, sculpture, film and video, as well as emerging technologies, interactive computer works, and virtual reality.&nbsp;I Was Raised on the Internet presents a global range of artists working in new media such as Oculus Rift and platforms like Facebook and Snapchat, looking at culture and &#39;trending&#39; content and how interacting with the world has shifted through constant exchange on the internet. Taking 1998 as a starting point, the exhibition decodes a generation of artists and viewers who have come to speak a unique vocabulary that has emerged with the new millennium. In addition to the idea of a millennial, the exhibition explores terms such as &#39;post-internet&#39; and &#39;post-digital,&#39; used by artists to imply a new, instant culture. Throughout the exhibition, the viewer becomes an active agent, engaging in new forms of technology and participating with the works both in the galleries and the digital works hosted online.

We always look forward to EXPO CHICAGO in September, but a highlight that is already on our radar is&nbsp;Creative Chicago: An Interview Marathon&nbsp;featuring one of the world&#39;s leading curators, critics, and art historians Hans Ulrich Obrist.&nbsp;Alongside partners the Chicago Humanities Festival,&nbsp;Navy Pier, and the Terra Foundation for American Art, EXPO will&nbsp;present&nbsp;a four-hour interview marathon&nbsp;in&nbsp;the Aon Grand Ballroom on Saturday, September 29, as part of the Terra Foundation for American Art&#39;s Art Design Chicago initiative.

Obrist&rsquo;s marathons are part of his life-long&nbsp;Interview Project, for which he has logged thousands of hours in discussion with some of the leading thinkers of our time. These conversations examine notions of art and creativity, painting a verbal portrait of our ever-changing cultural moment. Artistic Director of the Serpentine Gallery in London, Obrist hosted his first interview marathon&mdash;a 24-hour conversational exploration of art, ideas and creativity in 2005. The marathon format has become a central part of his practice ever since.

The&nbsp;Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago&nbsp;is a very different-looking institution as 2018 begins than it was in 2017. There&rsquo;s a top-notch new first-floor restaurant, Marisol, plus cafe and plaza space that replace what was a drab hallway. And the exterior of the building, criticized as austere, has been softened and highlighted for nearby Michigan Avenue by bold yellow lighted &ldquo;MCA&rdquo; signs.

Those are just some of the changes spearheaded by Pritzker Director&nbsp;Madeleine Grynsztejn, whose decade at the MCA has helped make it more inviting to the public while at the same time establishing a laser focus on spotlighting the work of emerging artists in Chicago and worldwide.

<h2>In Hollywood, Another Sign of Women Punching Back</h2>

On the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Sweetzer Avenue in front of&nbsp;The Standard in Hollywood&nbsp;beginning on Feb. 27, a monumental white neon outline of a uterus &mdash; with fiberglass boxing gloves in place of the ovaries &mdash; will slowly rotate at a height of 43 feet. Well-positioned to be adopted as the logo of the&nbsp;#MeToo movement, this declarative image of female empowerment is the first public art project by&nbsp;Zoe Buckman, a 32-year-old British artist based in New York. Titled &ldquo;Champ,&rdquo; the kinetic sculpture was commissioned by the&nbsp;Art Production Fund&nbsp;and will remain on view for a year.&nbsp;

<h2>The Clock Is Ticking:&nbsp;Reward for Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Heist on Dec 31: $10 million. On January 1: $5 million</h2>

As midnight approaches on New Year&rsquo;s Eve, when much of the country will be glued to the broadcasts from Times Square, Anthony Amore will be waiting for his phone to ring.

He is no lovelorn teen: Mr. Amore, director of security at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, is a detective of sorts on the trail of the world&rsquo;s largest unsolved art heist, in which thieves purloined 13 items, valued at half a billion dollars, from the museum in 1990. They stole works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Degas and others.

The museum is offering a head-spinning reward of $10 million for information leading to their recovery, an amount it says is the largest private reward ever offered for stolen property. The offer expires on Jan. 1, when it reverts to $5 million.

<h2>Architecture Sleuths Solve Mystery of World&#39;s Fair House in Wilmette</h2>

A Chicago architect has solved the mystery surrounding a Wilmette house&#39;s possible origin as a demonstration home built for the Century of Progress World&#39;s Fair in 1933.&nbsp;

Crain&#39;s reported this month&nbsp;that a family of homebuilders unwittingly purchased a lost landmark when it was marketed as vacant land. The Kruszewskis, a father and son who run MJK Homes, paid $915,000 for two-fifths of an acre on Chestnut Avenue, only later finding out from village officials that the squarish house might have been a model home from the fair and was moved up afterward from the Northerly Island fairgrounds.

<h2>22 Photos That Capture Christmas In The US</h2>

For many Americans, Christmas is a time for joy and acts of kindness. For others, it&#39;s a time for intense, over-the-top Christmas displays, excessive holiday shopping, and fire hazards around every corner. For the last 7 years, photographer Jesse Rieser has focused his camera on aspects of the holiday season that might appear a bit odd to those unfamiliar with Christmas traditions in the US.

In a statement on the artist&#39;s website for his ongoing project&nbsp;Christmas in America: Happy Birthday, Jesus,&nbsp;Rieser describes his pictures not as poking fun at these traditions, but rather a sincere exploration of the things that make this holiday unique for so many Americans.

<h2>Best architecture of 2017: Apple Store, Unity Temple and the Biennial in a remarkable year</h2>

With a new architecture biennial, a big Frank Lloyd Wright anniversary and a series of small gems, it was a very good year for Chicago architecture. Here are the highlights:

A Chicago double for L.A. architects:&nbsp;The&nbsp;second version&nbsp;of the Chicago Architecture Biennial built on the legacy of the first biennial with a show, titled &ldquo;Make New History,&rdquo; that explored how a new generation of architects is looking backward to move forward.&nbsp;

The curators of the exhibition, Los Angeles architects Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, shaped an elegant, albeit esoteric, framework that showcased work by more than 140 designers from over 20 countries. And they demonstrated how their &ldquo;Make New History&rdquo; approach can work in a modestly scaled but exemplary renovation of the common spaces inside the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

<h2>With $750,000 Grant, Minneapolis Institute of Art Starts Up Center for Empathy and the Visual Arts</h2>

The Minneapolis Institute of Art has received a $750,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and will use the money toward starting what it is calling the Center for Empathy and the Visual Arts, or CEVA for short. Other so-called centers for empathy have been established by activist organizations and international affairs groups&mdash;among them People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Stanford University&rsquo;s medical school, and the Center for Empathy in International Affairs, which has has worked with U.S. peace groups&mdash;yet no major art museum has created one before, making CEVA the first of its kind.

The launch of CEVA will include an initiative lasting nearly five years to convene philosophers, writers, artists, thought leaders, and others to research ways that the arts can make people more compassionate. This past October, the Minneapolis Institute began the initiative with a conference at the University of California, Berkeley. A second phase of research, in which the museum&rsquo;s curators will investigate how better to connect with visitors, will follow.

<h2>Why the Getty Center&rsquo;s Art Stayed Put as Fires Raged Nearby</h2>

Visitors come to the Getty Center in Los Angeles to see Vincent van Gogh&rsquo;s irises and other great works. What they don&rsquo;t see is the reason that these masterpieces could stay put while thousands in Southern California had to evacuate as multiple fires raged in recent days, one of which came within thousands of feet of the museum.

The Getty&rsquo;s architect, Richard Meier, built fire resistance into the billion-dollar complex, said Ron Hartwig, vice president of communications for the J. Paul Getty Trust. These hills are fire prone, but because of features like the 1.2 million square feet of thick travertine stone covering the outside walls, the crushed rock on the roofs and even the plants chosen for the brush-cleared grounds, &ldquo;The safest place for the artwork to be is right here in the Getty Center,&rdquo; he said.

<h2>Supreme Court hears arguments in claim against Iranian antiquities</h2>

Can a collection of Persian antiquities held at a Chicago museum be used to pay damages to the American victims of a terrorist bombing in Jerusalem? That was the question argued at the US Supreme Court on 4 December, in a claim brought by Jenny Rubin and others against Iran. But the justices who questioned the lawyers involved in the case seemed skeptical about allowing the artefacts to be seized.

Rubin and the other plaintiffs, who were the victims of a 1997 suicide bombing in a pedestrian mall, won a $71m judgment in US court against Iran in 2003. To get paid,&nbsp;they are claiming the 30,000 ancient Persian clay tablets&nbsp;and artifacts in the Persepolis Collection at the University of Chicago&#39;s Oriental Institute, which have been on loan from Iran since 1937.

If planners get their way, Chicago will have the nation&rsquo;s first major gospel music museum, on the site once occupied by Pilgrim Baptist Church, known as the birthplace of gospel.

The National Museum of Gospel Music will unveil its plans for the $37.2 million Bronzeville institution, targeting a 2020 opening, at a news conference Friday afternoon on the nearby campus of Illinois Institute of Technology.

<h2>Bob Meyer infuses color into his long history of theatrical&nbsp;artwork</h2>

Something unusually magical happens to the work of visual artists who also are preoccupied with the theater. Think of Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Jean Cocteau, Alexander Calder, Salvador Dali, Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney&nbsp;and William Kentridge, to name a few, and don&rsquo;t forget Leonardo da Vinci.

Bob Meyer, the Chicago-bred artist, actor, director and writer who now lives in a village outside Paris near Monet&rsquo;s Giverney gardens (and has installed his studio in an actual cave across the street from his home), is another ideal example of this cross-pollination of image with story, character and dialogue. His haunting pencil drawings and prints became a prized feature of the Chicago theater scene in the 1980s and &rsquo;90s, when he founded the Gare St. Lazare Players, a company that has since established itself in France and been seen throughout Europe, and under whose banner Meyer has been responsible for 60 productions of self-penned work, as well as plays by Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Sam Shepard, Wallace Shawn, Dario Fo and many others.

What would the world look like if more women were in charge?

An Artsy analysis comparing the artist rosters of the 199 female-run and male-run galleries showing at the 16th edition of&nbsp;Art Basel in Miami Beachprovides one clue. Dealers who are women are 28% more likely to show artists who are women. The gender breakdown of artists listed on the websites of the 126 male-run galleries showing at Art Basel in Miami Beach is 75% male artists to 25% female artists, a ratio of three to one.

<h2>It&#39;s past time to save the Uptown Theatre</h2>

Even before it went dark nearly four decades ago, the Uptown Theatre was in decline&mdash;the North Side&#39;s own architectural Miss Havisham, outfitted in its decaying Jazz Age finery. Once a dazzling movie theater that represented the outer limits of extravagant Roaring &#39;20s design, the 4,500-seat colossus by the 1970s had faded, playing host to Grateful Dead concerts and closed-circuit boxing matches. Then, in 1981, the doors shut&mdash;and since then, a generation of community activists has worked against the odds to see that those doors don&#39;t remain shut for good.

As Crain&#39;s contributor Mark Guarino&nbsp;reports in this week&#39;s issue,&nbsp;time is not on the preservationists&#39; side. &quot;If this isn&#39;t resolved soon, this building will continue to deteriorate,&quot; says Ward Miller, executive director of Preservation Chicago.

Giving Chicago its own Mount Rushmore was Kerry James Marshall&rsquo;s idea for his biggest work ever, a mural that will be officially dedicated Monday morning at a gathering of city luminaries.

&ldquo;RUSH MORE&rdquo; is an homage to women who have shaped arts and culture in Chicago &mdash; including Gwendolyn Brooks, Oprah Winfrey, Sandra Cisneros and Maggie Daley &mdash; and it occupies a wall nearly half the size of a football field on the west facade of the Cultural Center.

LONDON &mdash; Early next year, a portrait of Barack Obama will go up on the walls of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, produced by an artist who was chosen by Mr. Obama himself in the closing months of his presidency.

The artist, Kehinde Wiley, is known for picturing young black people in stylized portraits that are deliberate throwbacks to earlier traditions of painting. His &ldquo;Napoleon Leading the Army Over the Alps&rdquo; (2005) shows a young man in hiking boots and camouflage riding a rearing stallion the way the French emperor does in an early-1800s&nbsp;painting by&nbsp;Jacques-Louis David. In the 2010 &ldquo;Equestrian Portrait of King Philip II (Michael Jackson),&rdquo; the pop superstar Jackson, in a cape and elaborate armor, mimics the monarch in&nbsp;the Rubens work it references.

<h2>A New Study Shows That Most Artists Make Very Little Money, With Women Faring the Worst</h2>

The struggle is real.&nbsp;A just-released survey of international artists yields some dismal findings: In the US, a full three quarters of artists made $10,000 or less per year from their art.&nbsp;Close to half (48.7 percent) made no more than $5,000. The report, titled&nbsp;The Artfinder Independent Art Market Report: 2017,&nbsp;was commissioned by&nbsp;Artfinder, and doubles as a pitch&nbsp;for that company&rsquo;s online marketplace for independent artists.&nbsp;It was&nbsp;conducted by&nbsp;a-n, an artist information company which did a similar study specific to UK artists in 2013.

Based on data from 1,533 self-identified working artists in the US and the UK surveyed over the first three weeks of this month, the Artfinder report claims to be the &ldquo;biggest ever independent artist income survey.&rdquo; (UK income data is broken out separately, given the different currencies, but appears to represent roughly the same hard realities.)

<h2>How the internet is transforming the art world</h2>

These days, selling your art online is easy. Online art galleries, freelance platforms, digital stores, and other websites help connect artists to potential buyers. From watercolor pictures of squirrels to geometric patterns of maple leaves, there is a growing demand for original artwork in the digital space. However, the commercialization and dilution of art online is leading to new debates about the meaning and future of fine art.

In 2016, online sales of art totaled&nbsp;$3.27 billion. This figure comes from an annual report compiled by&nbsp;TEFAF, but it only includes data from art sales databases, dealers, collectors, and auctioneers. So while the report shows significant growth in the art industry online, it&#39;s still missing key parts. For example, sales from personal websites, individual artists, and some online platforms such as Etsy are missing.

So, the demand is there. But the TEFAF report also revealed another interesting trend in online art sales: They tend to be on the lower end of the price scale, with each piece usually selling for less than $500. It&#39;s easy to see this trend when perusing Etsy, Creative Market, or another online platform. You can find original artwork for a couple of dollars.

<h2>David Hockney&rsquo;s Life in Painting: Spare, Exuberant, Full</h2>

Give it up for David Hockney, one of painting&rsquo;s elder statesmen, and for his crystalline retrospective&nbsp;at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which proceeds in a string of perfectly curated mini-exhibitions. Check at the door the usual caveats and tsk-tsks regarding this wildly popular Anglo-Californian &mdash; that he&rsquo;s a lightweight; that his &ldquo;moment&rdquo; was the &rsquo;60s; that he&rsquo;s obvious. Suspend at least briefly the belief that a tragic vision, or abstraction, is essential for entry into art history&rsquo;s pantheon.

No, Mr. Hockney, at 80, is not Jasper Johns or Gerhard Richter. But he has his own greatness, which flows from openly following his own desires &mdash; including his attraction to other men &mdash; while rigorously exploring the ways art and life feed each other, visually and emotionally. Full disclosure, forthright joy and forward motion are the dynamos of his art, which in my book at least, gives him an edge over Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon.

<h2>Leonardo da Vinci Painting Sells for $450.3 Million, Shattering Auction Highs</h2>

After 19 minutes of dueling, with four bidders on the telephone and one in the room, Leonardo da Vinci&rsquo;s &ldquo;Salvator Mundi&rdquo; sold on Wednesday night for $450.3 million with fees, shattering the high for any work of art sold at auction. It far surpassed Picasso&rsquo;s &ldquo;Women of Algiers,&rdquo; which fetched $179.4 million at Christie&rsquo;s in May 2015. The buyer was not immediately disclosed.

There were gasps throughout the sale, as the bids climbed by tens of millions up to $225 million, by fives up to $260 million, and then by twos. As the bidding slowed, and a buyer pondered the next multi-million-dollar increment, Jussi Pylkkanen, the auctioneer, said, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s an historic moment; we&rsquo;ll wait.&rdquo;

For the first time in history, the&nbsp;majority of the world&rsquo;s population&nbsp;lives in urban areas. It seems fitting that Bill Walker wants to meet on the corner of Woodlawn and Hyde Park Boulevard. The street has always been his workplace, and that&#39;s where you most easily picture him&mdash;the father of the community mural movement, capturing, as he once wrote, the &quot;human side of street life in the city.&quot;

Photographs and films of Walker from the 60s and 70s always show him on the street, on sidewalks and in parking lots, climbing scaffolds to fill brick walls and viaducts with spirited reflections on the urban black experience. In three decades of painting murals in Chicago&#39;s neighborhoods, he became an authority on the culture of poverty, racism, and the simple healing effects of goodwill. The street was both Walker&#39;s milieu and his canvas.

Dieter Roelstraete, an internationally renowned curator of contemporary art, has been named the next curator of the&nbsp;Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society.

In his new role, effective November 10, Roelstraete will oversee all aspects of the Neubauer Collegium Exhibitions Gallery, working with the University arts community as well as with arts organizations in the city of Chicago and around the world.

Roelstraete joins the Neubauer Collegium after serving on the curatorial team that organized documenta 14, the international art exhibition that ran this past spring and summer in Kassel, Germany, and Athens, Greece. Widely hailed as a significant statement about the relevance and aesthetic concerns of the contemporary art world, the show brought together work by 160 artists at more than 80 sites.

<h2>Chicago&rsquo;s South Side Community Arts Center named a National Treasure</h2>

As the National Trust for Historic Preservation continues a push to oppose the&nbsp;elimination of the federal Historic Tax Credit program, the organization focused its attention on Chicago&rsquo;s Bronzeville community today to officially designate the South Side Community Arts Center as a National Treasure.

Situated at 3831 S. Michigan Avenue, the historic Georgian-Revival style building was originally built as a residence for grain merchant George A. Seaverns, Jr in 1892.

<h2>Here&rsquo;s the Artist List for the 2018 New Museum Triennial</h2>

The New Museum has revealed the list for its 2018 New Museum Triennial, which opens on February 13 and runs through May 27. Curated by New Museum curator Gary Carrion-Murayari and Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami deputy director and chief curator Alex Gartenfeld, the exhibition will be titled &ldquo;Songs for Sabotage,&rdquo; and will include more than 30 artists from 19 countries&mdash;a much smaller group than the last triennial, in 2015, which included 51 artists.

The exhibition, which is the triennial&rsquo;s fourth edition, will loosely focus on the relationship between art objects and the societies artists hail from, with meditations on the circulation of images and the legacies of colonialism and systemic racism interspersed throughout. &ldquo;The exhibition amounts to a call for action, an active engagement, and an interference in political and social structures urgently requiring them,&rdquo; a press release reads.

<h2>In Chicago, graffiti comes into its own as public art precedes major building developments</h2>

Graffiti in Chicago is not always vandalism. Though tagging, the stylized signatures sometimes used as gang markings, still pervade alleys and the occasional blank&nbsp;wall, graffiti has come into its own as&nbsp;public art. Whether on &ldquo;permission walls&rdquo; or commissioned by businesses, many neighborhoods in Chicago are filled with large-scale artworks that, until recently, were relegated to train cars and out-of-the-way&nbsp;places. But in neighborhoods on the near northwest side and near south of the city, fewer and fewer commercial walls are left blank. Partially as an attempt to stem random tagging and partially as an attempt to connect with young locals who may be future customers, businesses and developers are commissioning, or at least allowing, 
massive works of graffiti on their property.

In 1964, Richard Avedon published &ldquo;Nothing Personal,&rdquo; a lavish coffee table book with gravure-printed portraits of individuals who do not fit into any single classification: Allen Ginsberg standing naked in a Buddhist pose opposite George Lincoln Rockwell, the founder of the American Nazi Party; the puffy-eyed&nbsp;Dorothy Parker, her bags containing a lifetime of tears, side by side with a sullen and deflated, if still-shimmering,&nbsp;Marilyn Monroe; a young and earnest&nbsp;Julian Bond&nbsp;among members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee; and the grizzled&nbsp;William Casby,&nbsp;who had been born into slavery about 100 years earlier.

&ldquo;Nothing Personal&rdquo; was published only months after the passage of the Civil Rights Act, in the period of profound cultural soul-searching following President Kennedy&rsquo;s assassination. <h2>3Arts awards grants to more than 90 Chicago artists</h2>

More than 90 Chicago artists will receive grants Monday at the 10th annual 3Arts Awards, a yearly celebration held by the Chicago-based nonprofit organization that advocates for artists of color, artists with disabilities and women in the arts.

This year&rsquo;s unusually large group of awardees is a result of the new peer-to-peer &ldquo;Make a Wave&rdquo; giving initiative, which allowed 83 former 3Arts recipients to select 83 winners of $1000 grants.

<h2>Wave of Cyber Crime Hits Art World</h2>

Hauser &amp; Wirth, London-based dealers Simon Lee, Thomas Dane, Rosenfeld Porcini, and Laura Bartlett, and Tony Karman, the president of Expo Chicago, have all been targeted by hackers or had money stolen from them in the midst of transactions over artworks, according to a report in the&nbsp;Art Newspaper. The most common form of fraud so far consists of criminals hacking into an art dealer&rsquo;s e-mail account and monitoring incoming and outgoing correspondence.

<h2>Lord Mayor of London returns Nazi-looted Dutch Old Master</h2>

The Lord Mayor of London is today (6 November) returning a Dutch Old Master that was looted from the Netherlands during the Second World War and has been on display at Mansion House, his official residence, for nearly 30 years.

The Oyster Meal by Jacob Ochtervelt (around 1664-65) was one of 14 paintings that J.H. Smidt van Gelder, the director of the children&rsquo;s hospital in Arnhem, stored in a bank vault for safekeeping during the Second World War.

The paintings were looted in January 1945, when the Nazis plundered the town after British troops were forced to retreat in the Battle of Arnhem. The Oyster Meal is one of six works the family were not able to track down after the war, despite extensive searches. It is to be handed over to Smidt van Gelder&rsquo;s 96-year-old daughter, Charlotte Bischoff van Heemskerck, at a ceremony at Mansion House today.

Friday, November 3 will be a big opening night around the city, as many galleries open major shows that will be their final exhibitions of 2017. &nbsp;The busy night also coincides with the 24th edition of SOFA, which will be taking place on Navy Pier all weekend. Following the end of the fair&#39;s show on Friday, art lovers are encouraged to go out into the city&#39;s dozens of art spaces to see what is new in area galleries. Free shuttles take people between SOFA, the MCA and River North, but openings are happening in multiple neighborhoods. Kurosawa&rsquo;s film&nbsp;Dreams&nbsp;has a scene where a beautiful snow spirit drapes a fallen hiker with layer upon layer of shimmering fabric.&nbsp;Despite their warmth, these blankets of snow, and&nbsp;fatigue and slumber must be shaken off for the hiker to survive. Joo says that her&nbsp;recent paintings explore different connotations of drapery as a subject and she looks to this film as inspiration for many shapes and draped forms in her work.&nbsp;

A cottage in Glencoe that Frank Lloyd Wright designed as part of what was supposed to become a grand estate came on the market Oct. 13 for the first time in more than 60 years.

The asking price is $1 million for the one-story, three-bedroom house on a third of an acre on Franklin Road.

&quot;We&#39;re looking for an architect or Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiast who will restore this house,&quot; said the listing agent, James Tiernan of Re/Max Center. <h2>The U.S. Is Withdrawing from UNESCO&mdash;What Happens Now?</h2>

In a short statement that spoke volumes about American engagement with the international community, the United States announced on Thursday that it will withdraw from United Nations cultural organization UNESCO at the end of the year. The Trump administration has justified the withdrawal in part due to what it claims is UNESCO&rsquo;s &ldquo;anti-Israel bias.&rdquo; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump&rsquo;s move and followed suit. Cultural policy experts have been left shaking their heads.

What does the withdrawal actually mean for UNESCO? Is the &ldquo;anti-Israel bias&rdquo; the administration&rsquo;s main reason for pulling out? And can the organization survive without the United States?

There was one bit of good news to come out of the last week&rsquo;s auctions in London: the anonymous consignor of Jean-Michel Basquiat&rsquo;s&nbsp;Red Skull&nbsp;(1982), which sold for $21.5 million at&nbsp;Christie&rsquo;s contemporary evening sale Friday night, announced that he or she would donate all the proceeds after taxes to the the New Jersey chapter of the Knowledge Is Power Program, a nonprofit that helps open new public charter schools.

Today, KIPP New Jersey announced how it was planning to spend the funds, which after seller&rsquo;s fees and taxes amount to somewhere between $7 million and $9 million.

Are those pants or sculpture? Chicago auction house takes couture beyond the runway

One morning last week, a man roughly the size of an NFL linebacker shoved me aside so he could exit a crowded subway car first. As we rode the narrow escalator to the street, his broad, meaty back rising like a wall in front of me, I thought, &ldquo;I bet that wouldn&rsquo;t have happened if I were wearing the pants.&rdquo;

The pants I had in mind were a pair I had seen a fewlesldays before: blood-red trousers designed by Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garcons. One might best describe them as overalls, because they hang from shoulder straps.

<h2>Closed Bronzeville school becomes a student art&nbsp;gallery</h2>

It was hard for Irene Robinson not to cry as she walked the halls of the former Anthony Overton Elementary School. Five of Robinson&rsquo;s children attended the school before it was closed by Chicago Public Schools in 2013. Since then, the building has fallen into a state of disrepair. The flooring has been torn up, ceiling tiles are missing and some doors and windows are now boarded up or covered in caution tape, with glass shattered from attempts to enter.

&ldquo;It was so much more than a school,&rdquo; Robinson said through tears. &ldquo;This was a family. Every time I pass by here I feel like this is a gravesite.&rdquo;

&ldquo;Opening Closings&rdquo;&nbsp;is a collaboration between Borderless Studios, DOCOMOMO-US-Chicago and the Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education. For Saturday only, the former Bronzeville school featured student artwork. The exhibit is part of the Chicago Architecture Biennial

<h2>After hours program returns to Frank Lloyd Wright&rsquo;s Robie House</h2>

If you missed the last several iterations of After Hours at Robie House, there&rsquo;s going to be four more events this month. Once again, the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust is opening the historic Prairie School home in&nbsp;Hyde Park&nbsp;to the public for drinks and live music. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in 1910, the Prairie style home is a Chicago Landmark, a U.S. National Historic Landmark, and is a home that Wright himself considered to be one of his greatest works.

<h2>Newly Discovered Copy of Declaration of Independence Will be Auctioned</h2>

On July 9, 1776, the Manhattan printer John Holt gently edited the Declaration of Independence text and then published 500 copies.

Only four of the Holt Broadsides, as the documents came to be called, were&nbsp;known to survive&nbsp;until a few months ago, when a fifth surfaced in a private collection. The authenticated document and related papers, which belong to a descendant of some of early British settlers in eastern Long Island, will be auctioned on Nov. 11 at&nbsp;Blanchard&rsquo;s Auction Service&nbsp;in Potsdam, N.Y.

<h2>Frieze draws up plan to protect art world from Brexit</h2>

Ongoing concerns about the impact of the UK&rsquo;s withdrawal from the European Union (EU) have prompted the organisers of Frieze to draw up a list of recommendations designed to &ldquo;help maintain the best possible conditions&rdquo; for the art world. In an open letter, Victoria Siddall, the director of the Frieze fairs, aired her concerns about the impact of Brexit on galleries that are based in the UK or exhibit at fairs in London. Siddall shared her proposals with the Creative Industries Federation, an arts lobbying organisation, as part of a larger discussion of how the government should respond to the needs of the cultural sector.

Representatives of Frieze have &ldquo;spoken to a range of people working in galleries&rdquo;, Siddall says, and have formulated a plan of action with four recommendations. These include maintaining the current rate of VAT (5%) on works imported into the UK; continuing the free circulation of works between the EU and the UK; and maintaining the temporary admission procedure, which ensures that works imported temporarily for events such as fairs and exhibitions are exempt from import duties and VAT.

<h2>Brazilian Artist Tarsila do Amaral Comes to New York and Chicago</h2>

In Brazil she is famous enough to be called by her first name, Tarsila. In the U.S., where contemporary Brazilian art has an increasing following, the work of Tarsila do Amaral is rarely seen and hardly known. But starting this weekend, the artist, who spent the 1920s giving European modernism a resounding Brazilian makeover, will have her first American solo show at two major American museums.

Artistic directors, architects, and educators Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, of L.A.&rsquo;s&nbsp;Johnston Marklee, invited more than 140 participants from around the world to interpret the exhibit&rsquo;s theme, &ldquo;Make New History.&rdquo; Based on the myriad of architectural history, design, and urban planning displays, it appeared to be a wide-ranging prompt. Gupta credited Tony Karman, EXPO Chicago&rsquo;s director since 2011, with helping revitalize the city&rsquo;s art scene. Chicago has, for decades, had some of the world&rsquo;s most prestigious art institutions and a sophisticated group of collectors, but Karman, Gupta noted, has brought everyone together in support of the city&rsquo;s cultural scene&mdash;from Mayor Rahm Emanuel, whose photo and personal note appear in the fair&rsquo;s promotional materials, to the institutions, collectors, universities, and even non-profit organizations from the U.S. and abroad.

BRIDGEPORT &mdash; Think you have the next oil-and-cardboard masterpiece? Now is your chance to submit it for a special, cardboard-only art show happening at Bridgeport&#39;s Co-Prosperity Sphere.

The&nbsp;Art on Cardboard Show&nbsp;is seeking submissions for its 15th annual exhibit in October. Described by organizers as an art show &quot;by the people for the people,&quot; the exhibit features pieces from dozens of artists guided by just one rule &mdash; use cardboard.

<h3>A visit to the art-filled Lakeview tavern that is Ten Cat</h3>

There are few more pleasant places than a neighborhood saloon on a late afternoon and so it was at the Ten Cat Tavern one day last week.

A couple of men played pool on one of the two ancient and magnificent Brunswick tables that occupy the middle of the long rectangular tavern and walking past them, careful not to bump their cue sticks, you would have passed a jukebox that still contains 45s (an amazing selection of them too), a room with a fireplace and comfortable chairs and a couch before eventually finding a small and peaceful garden dotted with a few tables. &nbsp;--Via Rick Kogan, Chicago Tribune

AMSTERDAM &mdash; When the cultural historian and Piet Mondrian biographer L&eacute;on Hanssen visited the Bozar Center for the Arts in Brussels in the spring of 2016, a painting stopped him dead in his tracks.

It looked remarkably similar to an untitled 1923 Mondrian that the Nazis had displayed as an example of &ldquo;degenerate art&rdquo; in a famous 1937 Munich exhibition. States are cracking down on art collectors who aren&rsquo;t paying taxes owed on their purchases.

States don&rsquo;t release details about investigations into evasion of taxes on art purchases.
