But what about sold-out Lego kits? Such is the case with Lego’s Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night edition. The kit, which allows enthusiasts to build a recreation of the 1889 Post-Impressionist masterpiece, has been flying off the shelves since it came out in May of this year. The kit came to market through a unique avenue; the Starry Night theme was proposed as a set by Truman Cheng, a PhD student from Hong Kong, through the company’s Lego Ideas system that allows people to suggest ideas for potential kits.&nbsp;Via Artnet&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/28/arts/design/ukraine-war-art-culture.html">The Role of Art in a Time of War</a>You do not have to go far outside of Kyiv to see how the massacre of civilians and the trampling of culture still come one after the other. Chicago, a 4500 sq ft space she built from the ground up, on July 30.&nbsp;The move from the physical to the online means that she is selling off the contents of the gallery space (other than the art.) Edelman shared that she has 80+ Juno cans/lights, 40 folding chairs on a cart, wedges, shelving, microphone/speaker for presentations, and other gallery related items. We even love the drive, knowing that in just 30-40 minutes we can escape the city and end up in a verdant wonderland of plants, sculpture and suburbanites on bicycles. My own children love to run through the rose and English gardens in particular.&nbsp;This spring/summer CBG is commemorating its extraordinary growth over the last five decades and marking its 50th birthday in 2022 with Flourish: The Garden at 50, running through September 25. Members, visitors, and program participants are invited to celebrate 50 years of the Garden connecting people to the natural world. In particular they are invited to admire the art specially commissioned to make this anniversary. Participating artists include Edra Soto, Faheem Majeed, Patrick Dougherty, Luke Jerram, and others.&nbsp;“What began as an ambitious vision to have Chicago’s own public garden is now 28 gardens and four natural areas in Glencoe, 16 community garden and farm sites in Chicago and Lake County, and dozens of conservation and restoration research sites around the country,” said Jean Franczyk, the Garden’s president and chief executive officer. “We are thankful to all who have shown up for nature, supported our conservation mission, and inspired us to keep imagining a future where people and planet thrive.”<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721419091/nysdn3xmfigg3shnsrbr.jpg"><figcaption>The Rookery by Patrick Dougherty—Chapel Hill, NC</figcaption></figure>&nbsp;Flourish: The Garden at 50 features a series of Garden-wide experiences. We invite all artists to respond to the current state of our country by exhibiting an original work of art or performance in public. This artwork/performance can be displayed outside a home, on a lawn, from a window visible to the public, or through an artist formed partnership with a local business between August 15-September 30, 2022. This collective action provides artists and community members in neighborhoods throughout the country (and world) a way to connect with one another. CNL Projects Relaunches Art-in-Place in Response to Epidemic of Violence

Reserving a ‘table for one’ at a Michelin-starred restaurant rarely enters the realm of possibilities; even less so is taking a snack to an art gallery. In Lincoln Park, Chef Tomaska and his team at <a href="https://www.esmechicago.com">Esmé</a> curate a world where you can have your art and eat it, too.For the uninitiated, the Lincoln Park restaurant received a Michelin star in April 2022 less than a year after its opening on August 18th, 2021. Located on the tree-laden corner of Webster and Clark, Esmé’s open windows and modern exterior welcome art and food lovers for a feast for the senses.&nbsp;Chef Jenner Tomaska and partner Katrina Bravo came up with the food-art tandem by listening to artists talking about their work. “I’m interested in the story of how and why an artist decides to create. Working in the kitchen, [as a chef] you remove yourself from the conversation a lot of the time, but I like the conversations that happen when people come together and discuss a piece,” Chef Tomaska tells me.&nbsp;Esmé's current menu is inspired by Chicago-based multimedia artist Courtney Shoudis. I recently had the chance to speak with the creatives on scene.&nbsp;*<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721419091/izdst6pe94tdv6vhtv4s.png"><figcaption>Photo: Dan Piotrowski</figcaption></figure>Before working in painting and sculpture, and new media such as film, Shoudis worked in fashion and design. She is currently working on a new painting for her series ‘The Passing of Time’— a collection of paintings which renders seasons passing while waiting for her partner’s final immigration interview into America. At first, Shoudis created these paintings to grapple with long distance and the confusion spurred by immigration processes that have been backlogged by the pandemic. “I naïvely thought that it would be six months. Now, I am working on the 13th season,” she says. “It’s at the point where it is just madness. The reason I wanted to visualize it was to cope.”&nbsp;Shoudis and I moved our conversation from the bar into the main dining area and gallery space, into an area by the west entrance with tabletops designated for amuse bouches. In our periphery, Shoudis’ untitled female nudes brush against Cubist traditions with their delineating figures and flattened, color blocked forms. “I thought about pulling [the women] apart, reconsidering them from the female viewpoint and experience. In this work I’m trying to understand these different stages of life through the body, and I'm trying to figure out how much of that has been seen before me as well as who I am.”&nbsp;As we orbit around the sculptures, we see the angular silhouette of a woman on her knee, then standing up and being strong again. The lines echo the sculptures and the tabletop female sculptures, which Shoudis had designed specifically to function as a serving plate for the subsequent bites. She has long been interested in the use of women’s bodies in art, using her own practice to point out, and then reconsider, these trends in a new light. “With the tabletop sculptures, I played with the idea of objectifying women even further,” she points out, as I watch guests pluck appetizers off the structure.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721419092/wi7z118nu5roxq8mdzrs.jpg"><figcaption>Photo: Sandy Noto</figcaption></figure>In the main dining area there are four canvases with colors exploding across the canvas. Their impressionistic fluidity contrasts against the geometric sculptures.&nbsp;“I have never shown these two bodies of work in the same space,” says Shoudis. For her, Seasons has been a personal odyssey in which she draws from various texts. “I never know what will trigger the next season,” she says. One painting with controlled, deep purple daubs across the raw canvas is Shoudis’ reflection of Ophelia’s desperation in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. In Mayakovsky and the Passing of Winter, she mentions an affinity for a line from Frank O Hara’s poem “Mayakovsky:”&nbsp; “It may be the coldest day of the year, what does he think of that? I mean, what do I? And if I do, perhaps I am myself again.” In another, she meditates on the falling of cherry blossoms.*Sitting down with the work of art is one part of the story. My friend Nancy had flown in from New Orleans for the weekend and – in a herculean Human Race effort, hailed an Uber straight to Esmé to join me for our 7pm dinner reservation (I resigned from eating alone, here). Our very first bite was a reconstructed Cheeto,™ with its puff shell and orange cheese powder staining our fingers a la nostalgia. Each bite, like each of Shoudis’ season, carried a new impression – bittersweet, smoky, acidic – and each platter arrived with another story. For instance, a savory puff pastry was served on a gossamer origami plate (“Lips”<a href="https://www.instagram.com/polyscene/?hl=en"> Polly Verity</a>). One meal was delivered on a zoetrope–it disappeared quickly so that I could spin the plate and witness birds in flight. As a preamble to dessert – the grand finale– smoke emerged out of a marbled head on a platter.&nbsp;*<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721419093/f7qr5tq9yf4tfhaflzq1.png"><figcaption>Photos: Anna Dobrowolski</figcaption></figure>&nbsp;After the feast, I asked the Chef about the process of creating a menu inspired by art and some of its challenges. Says Tomaska, "Esmé was conceptualized to lead with art and community first, so in many ways we flipped the construct of a restaurant on its head, reverse engineering the process of creating a menu. It's exciting to create in this way, but also presents challenges in terms of the frequency with which we are making menu changes and switching out the artwork, something we embrace because of our dedication to this mission and goal to utilize our space to be a platform to shine a light on the individuals who contribute to Chicago's creative culture. We've been fortunate that we have been embraced by the community and take the care to explain the vision for what we are doing as we are guiding their meal at the restaurant.”&nbsp;When I told Tomaska I could appreciate the mission to give back as well as give a platform to artists, he responds that there is more to come. “The next collaboration will be with <a href="https://www.kitchenpossible.org/">Kitchen Possible</a>, a local non-profit dedicated to empowering kids to make amazing things happen in their lives through lessons learned in the kitchen. What We're Reading: 7/11/22

Mixed media. &nbsp;Photo: CGN</figcaption></figure>By GINNY VAN ALYEAWandering through Nick Cave's expansive retrospective, Forothermore, at the MCA a few weeks ago, I knew it wouldn't be my last visit. Luckily for those of us who live in Chicago, the exhibition is on view until October 2. If you haven't seen it yet, we know how fast summer goes, so make sure to see the show soon.&nbsp;I've seen Cave's work in many places over the years, but this is a chance to see so much of it all at once while following the timeline of Cave's art over the decades. Cave's work is undeniably beautiful to behold and also transfixing for the viewer because of its detail and technical complexity. Right there these things make for a blockbuster of a show. But the reason to return is to consider more deeply things other than beadwork and recognizable ephemera. Cave, an artist the MCA describes as "celebrated for projects that blend community building with vibrant works of art across disciplines," has become a star because of his sculptural Soundsuits that are both works of art as well as performance vehicles that can offer a means of contemplating humanity. These works can be static museum pieces you're not allowed to touch, as well as transformative garments worn to enliven public space and captivate attention spans in real time. In each case they mean more than meets the eye.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721419091/issokcqjfabs0t4lfcfy.jpg"><figcaption>Installation view. Photo: CGN</figcaption></figure>&nbsp;While the Soundsuits on display are static here, several works are helpfully accompanied by audio narrations by Cave himself. One work – Hustle Coat – that hangs on the wall is brought to life when you can hear the swishing clanks of the watches and jewels that line the interior of a jacket while Cave describes, "The hustle coat is really a trench coat, which is made out of cotton. It’s double breasted. It has a belt. But inside of the coat it also has a lining. And this lining is covered in jewels. Just imagine—necklaces, chains, watches, jewelry, stones, are all sewn by hand into this lining of the coat, making it appear to be this jewel box."&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721419092/udu6qy9nm66vfb4p8zpr.jpg"><figcaption>Nick Cave, Hustle Coat, 2021. Photo: CGN</figcaption></figure>&nbsp;While you should see the show in person, it is helpful to also spend time on the MCA's website afterward in order to view the additional media available, in particular the <a href="https://mcachicago.org/publications/video/2022/nick-cave-forothermore">exhibition video</a> featuring an interview with Cave and videos of activated Soundsuits.&nbsp;There is also a totally wild and immersive (I say this in the best, not overused sense) site-specific installation in the MCA's soaring two-story atrium and fourth floor, Spinner Forest, made up of thousands of shiny, twirling spinners. On a recent visit to Wisconsin, I was so tempted to buy the spinners I spied at several road side gas stations, but I realized that were I to bring it home it would not have the magic that Cave has given it. &nbsp;And this is the reason to see the exhibition: the experience magic an artist can bring to the every day as well as to history. You will enjoy seeing these works together in this setting, maybe coming away as I did with a new, more personal understanding of art as well as struggle and even the future.&nbsp;<a href="https://mcachicago.org/exhibitions/2022/nick-cave-forothermore">Nick Cave: Forothermore</a> is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue designed with Cave's partner, Bob Faust. The exhibition is curated by Naomi Beckwith, former Manilow Senior Curator. It is presented in the Griffin Galleries of Contemporary Art on the museum's fourth floor.
