Run by Chicago native Isimeme “Easy” Otabor, <a href="https://www.anthony.gallery/">Anthony Gallery</a>, which is located in the Fulton River District of Chicago, will collaborate with artist Theaster Gates’ Rebuild Foundation to highlight emerging and established contemporary artists working in the field of African and Black American identity. Rebuild Foundation and Anthony Gallery will kick off the series on January 20th with ‘Is where it’s at!’, a special exhibition from Chicago-based Nigerian American artist <a href="https://www.adesholamakinde.com/">Adeshola Makinde</a>.&nbsp;‘Is where it’s at!,’ a presentation of new and existing works drawing upon the celebrated EBONY and JET Magazines, pays homage to the Johnson Publishing Company’s reign in documenting, celebrating and amplifying all aspects of Black life in America. The exhibition’s title is a nod to musician Nina Simone’s “Young, Gifted and Black” performance at the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, marrying themes of Black empire, Black life and Black music found throughout the archives at the Arts Bank. It sounds like a skip, or a heartbeat. I hope that the way the year sounds when spoken aloud might just mean that it will be a lighter, fulfilling, year.&nbsp;During the weeks of production for this CGN Arts Guide, naturally we look ahead to what will come and what we will be different, usually better, than the preceding year. At the end of 2019 could not have fathomed the 2020 that was coming. At the end of 2020 we were grateful that galleries were open and still in business. Now, with a view of 2022 on the horizon, I’m an optimist. With the expectation that 2022 will be a good year, I’m most interested in what exactly will take shape and how we will settle into a landscape that is fully opened up following the challenges and limits of the past couple years. We can’t expect to do all that we did before the pandemic. The to-do list we had needs to be rewritten.I think 2022 will come with a broader acceptance–versus fear–of COVID in day-to-day life. Galleries and their collectors, along with museums, have come to appreciate appointments, ticketed entries and time set aside to intentionally view and consider art. Time, space and people are each very precious resources, so planning and making choices has become essential to everything, even more than before.&nbsp;Art fairs, long a much-loved, yet widely lamented, mainstay of the art market, will return in full this year. Many galleries and collectors will be grateful for their return and the exposure and sales they bring. Others will have decided they can do without them. Either way, regularly practicing being intentionally present in the real world, as opposed to the virtual one, is good.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418989/wfo9ybqcd7w9cg1fai0z.jpg"><figcaption>Sarah Blood, "I'm So Fucking Tired" (installation), gold sequins, neon, fan, gold streamers, mixed media, variable dimensions, 2017. Courtesy Ken Saunders Gallery, Neon and Light Museum installation 2021</figcaption></figure>*&nbsp;Mid-way through 2021 my husband and I bought a house, moving our family from an apartment to a home with more room, including space for the CGN office. Moving is hard work – something I knew on one level but experienced on another. My optimism carried me a long way, but there was a point where being in between our familiar home of a decade and moving into another was unsettling. Nothing felt in place and the to-do list seemed insurmountable.&nbsp;One morning, right after we finally moved in, artist James Mesplé called saying he wanted to stop by the house. James was one of the only people who actually stopped into CGN somewhat regularly over the past few years, and I had worried that leaving the office would mean I wouldn’t get his dear, friendly visits any more. But James made it a point to come to the house, and he was bearing a gift. He shared that it was a tradition when he was growing up that whenever someone would move to a new home, all the relatives and friends would arrive with a little something in a red envelope as a sign of good luck and as a means of “feathering the nest.” James told me you never know what you’re going to need, but you’ll always need something. His kindness was exactly what I needed – a sign for the year ahead, one in a new nest, and one, hopefully, for a new post-COVID world, where we will gather the feathers and settle into new ways of doing many things together.&nbsp;&nbsp;</body></html>

The wall works roughly map onto the color scheme of the sculptures, recast in three different media – a set of post-it notes, an enigmatic abstract photograph (titled "Photograph"), and a blown-up screen grab of a frozen cherry pie with associated Tweet. Everything in Harrison's artistic ecosystem is buzzing with latent meaning – nothing is arbitrary, but nothing is obvious.&nbsp;&nbsp;</body></html>

These 2021 Exhibitions are Closing Soon

Below is a preview of the many events that will be taking place over the course of 2022, from international art fairs to gallery openings, walks, and more. We are also sharing some news about galleries that are new to CGN as well as those that have anniversaries to celebrate this year!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;ART FAIRS<a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/events/expo-chicago">EXPO CHICAGO</a> is back and returning to its place on the spring calendar, April 7–10, after taking place in September since 2012. The original Art Expo first took place in Chicago in May 1980. This year’s calendar change will shift much of the art world’s focus from September to April, with Chicago galleries planning their spring shows in accordance with the energy that comes along with the fair. Watch for lots of buzz.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/events/chicago-antiques-art-design-show-176f8db2-f169-4dcc-92cf-d75145c7359e">The Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show</a> is set for May 12–15, 2022 at the Merchandise Mart after two years off.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/organizations/57th-street-art-fair">The 57th Street Art Fair</a> is planning a return to in person as well, when they will finally celebrate their 75th anniversary in June at the Hyde Park fair.&nbsp;As of press time, the end of 2021, we are still waiting to hear about dates and plans for Intersect Chicago (formerly SOFA) as well as The Other Art Fair (which did take place in 2021 but will switch venues in 2022).&nbsp;&nbsp;WELCOMESCGN’s annual list of galleries has tied a record in 2022. We are proud to share nearly <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/organizations">100 galleries, museums and art spaces</a> in these pages this year, a testament to just how much art there is to see in our part of the country and to the resolve to keep making and showing art no matter the obstacles. We also have more Wisconsin spaces listed than ever. Pick a street, neighborhood, suburb or city within 100 miles, and CGN can direct you towards art to find.&nbsp;We encourage you to read each listing’s program description and discover new spaces, artists and services, as well as revisit those who blazed trails early on. The eight Chicago-based organizations are the Bronzeville Black Chicagoan Historical Society, Chicago History Museum, Chicago Public Art Group, Lewis University, Muslim American Leadership Alliance, Puerto Rican Arts Alliance, South Side Community Art Center and Trickster Cultural Center while the three organizations based in the Lowcountry of South Carolina to receive the grant are Clemson University, Gibbes Museum of Art and The Educational Foundation of the University of South Carolina Lancaster.This announcement represents the second round of organizations to receive the Broadening Narratives grant. All projects promote BIPOC communities, LGBTQ+ perspectives, working-class narratives, small community experiences, as well as other underrepresented groups and viewpoints. Additionally, the Foundation renewed its $25,000 grant to each of the five Broadening Narratives advisory groups that assisted with the formation of the Broadening Narratives funding initiative: Black Metropolis Research Consortium, Chicago Collections Consortium, Chicago Cultural Alliance, the College of Charleston’s Lowcountry Digital Library, and the Southeastern Museums Conference.“While the purpose of collections is to ensure that stories are preserved, many narratives are overlooked because of decisions based on race, gender, sexual identity, educational background, economic or social status, or because they are perceived to be outside the conventional thinking of the day,” said David Farren, Executive Director of the Foundation. “We are thrilled to announce these grant recipients and want to thank these organizations for being part of this new way forward in collections thinking that focuses on telling broader and more inclusive narratives.”&nbsp;The Chicago-based organizations and projects to be funded by Broadening Narratives:·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bronzeville Black Chicagoan Historical Society (BHS) will work with a metadata specialist to better understand, code, and describe their collection which has been scattered between several storage units for the past 20 years. "CPAG is grateful for this funding and opportunity to analyze and organize its archives with the goal of sharing the research to the public, including the history and language of Chicago's communities," said Executive Director Chantal Healey. "With CPAG's 50th anniversary starting in 2022, this grant could not have come at a more important time as CPAG plans to unveil its archives at an exhibit at Chicago Art Department in September and October 2022."&nbsp;·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Lewis University was selected by the Council of Independent Colleges to join a collaborative group that will surface the unheard narratives of Black communities along the Illinois and Michigan Canal, with an emphasis on Joliet, as part of the Legacies of American Slavery project. The digitization of pertinent materials will ultimately result in a digital exhibition and two traveling physical exhibitions with accompanying public programs developed to bring greater awareness of these narratives.“The 20th&nbsp;century history of African Americans in Joliet includes the prominent role of Black churches, which serve not only as religious institutions, but also as hubs for the region’s civil rights movements,” said Dr. Laura Franklin, Dean of General Education and College of Humanities, Fine Arts &amp; Communications at Lewis University. “This grant will make it possible to recover first-hand narratives of this period, and also to engage new audiences in learning about this history.”&nbsp;·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Muslim American Leadership Alliance (MALA) will enhance its oral history project, Muslim American Journeys, with additional stories from Chicago's Black Muslim community. In addition to recording up to ten new interviews, MALA will revisit past Chicago interviewees to record updated testimonials. "MALA's goal is to use the power of storytelling to amplify the voices of Black Muslims in Chicago and broaden the cultural narrative to be more inclusive, diverse, and equitable,” said Deputy Director and Co-FounderAhmed Flex Omar. “We are honored to have the support of the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation; this funding will empower MALA to embark on a more robust approach to oral history work that will allow the voices of Chicago's Black Muslim communities to receive the recognition, respect, and consideration they deserve."&nbsp;·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Puerto Rican Arts Alliance (PRAA) will plan for the expansion of its El Archivo Project with images and stories of Chicago's Puerto Rican/Latinx LGBTQ community, in partnership with the Association of Latinx Action (ALMA), Chicago’s only Latinx LGBTQ organization. The funds will support a preliminary scan of available materials and themes, engage community stakeholders, and help form an advisory committee to move the project forward.&nbsp;“The Puerto Rican Arts Alliance is excited to receive funding from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation,” said Founder &amp; Executive Director Carlos Hernandez. “This special support now allows PRAA to deepen its El Archivo Project research and meaningfully connect with first voice LGBTQ+ Latino(a) pioneers and other leaders. The project will stabilize select artwork and assemblages of historic materials, which will then be digitized and made available on the University of Chicago's Visual Resources Center and on SSCAC's website through a platform that creates interactive historical narratives incorporating images from the archives and collections.“Since its founding in 1940 by artists and community members including Dr. Margaret Burroughs, the South Side Community Art Center has always been a haven for the work of Black women as both artistic creators and community organizers,” said Executive Director Monique Brinkman-Hill. “We are especially grateful for the support that will enable us to present their work in its full glory.”&nbsp;&nbsp;·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Trickster Cultural Center – a creative and community hub for Native peoples in Chicago's northwestern suburbs – will create a series of videos that document the traditional use of plants in Native American healing and wellness practices. The project will interview Native elders on practices unique to their communities as well as document the planting, maintenance, and harvesting of a medicine garden.
