If you have followed CGN for a while then this will come to you as a follow up from our Q&amp;A series from 2017. &nbsp;We hope you enjoy!&nbsp;Number of years in business: 49<figure class="image image-style-side"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417599/etifucn3ifkjfphdcfrn.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;How did you begin your career?&nbsp;Graduating from University of Kansas in 1971 with a printmaking degree I had become obsessed with antiques collecting and old stuff in general. I landed a job with a dealer in old master, modern and contemporary prints, The Lakeside Studio, based in Lakeside, Michigan (John Wilson, the studio owner, later started the Chicago Art Expo.) They did not have a gallery location but rather did one-day presentations on college campuses from coast to coast, and my territory was everything east of the Rocky Mountains. I drove over 84,000 miles in 18 months and visited what seemed like every college and university campus there was. I also had appointments at major museums along the way such as MoMA, the Whitney Museum and the Library of Congress. Everywhere I went people were kind and open, interested and eager to see our inventory of 16th to 20th century prints. I wrote hundreds of invoices and collected hundreds of checks, all of which had to be mailed each evening back to Lakeside. I also started collecting 19th century prints. After my second year on the road I couldn't face another motel room and I quit to go get my MFA, (and begin selling off my collection). That job was the only one I ever had and it set my sail for the rest of my life as a dealer.What inspired you to open a gallery?I always dealt privately from home and at fairs, but I never really wanted a gallery. It seemed like too much responsibility, but I still always mused about it. When I turned 50 my wife, Janis Kanter, said: "Get a gallery or don't get a gallery, but stop talking about it!"Is there a unifying element in your program or artist representation?I have to like the work, like the artist, and feel a fighting chance of selling it.How are you connecting with collectors and artists right now? Have you added to or increased your digital outreach?Over the past two decades, as the gallery scene in Chicago has shrunk we have certainly seen an uptick in our online on out-of-state sales. I still really value the local collectors and consultants we work with, but one can't stay in business just dealing locally.Which exhibitions have you had to postpone or adjust due to COVID-19?John Santoro, new paintings.Janice Biala, paintings from 1952-1962.What percentage of your sales have previously been online vs in person (including art fairs)?&nbsp;I can't name an exact number, but I have always felt that well over 50% of our business is to people who do not reside in the Chicago area.Do you want to share any silver linings, insights or anything else with readers, collectors and fellow dealers?My personal silver lining is just having been in the ball game for so long. Amid Art Market Uncertainty, EXPO CHICAGO Confirms Dates of Ninth Edition September 2020

City of Chicago Awards Individual Artists Program Grants: 13 Receive $10K

Initially scheduled for June 13/14 (always the second full weekend in June), Art Fair Chair, Sasha Mayoras announced the difficult decision by first alerting the 250 participating artists. “While much can change between today and June, we made this decision now as we feel it is in the best interests of you, the artists, our volunteers and neighbors,” said Mayoras. This new platform will raise money for and provide direct relief to the creative professionals and cultural organizations that have been&nbsp;impacted by the shutdown. It will also serve as an online community where creatives share their work, connecting with the public while at home during these challenging times. Through the newly launched&nbsp;Arts for Illinois Relief Fund, individual artists and artisans – including stage and production members and part-time cultural workers – experiencing an urgent need are able to apply for one-time grants of $1,500 distributed by <a href="http://go.pardot.com/e/789543/artist-relief-/l2zn/33260951?h=trJ3YpBw_INH9OAQY5Ien5iYMpei6_KwbLJZ4Dn5YE4">3Arts</a>. Grants will be awarded through a lottery system and will be disseminated quickly. The general points about why it’s good for individuals to buy art have long been because you love it, because it supports an artist, because it makes a statement, because it’s unique. But more than that, behind that virtual image is something you can touch and feel and experience. It's unlike almost any other thing you can buy, bring home and live with.&nbsp;I once wrote about how art can save lives (it's written on a pin I have above my desk in my office, which I miss right now). An artist’s view of the world, seen and experienced in person through a constructed object, a performance or a concept, can be a powerful learning resource as well as a lens through which to view history or what is happening right now. A work of art can memorialize a tragedy, and it can preserve beauty; it can provide a vehicle for&nbsp;participating in a larger community and also connect with the past. In the fall 2018 issue of CGN artist&nbsp;<a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2018/8/artist-suellen-rocca-a-life-story-through-art">Suellen Rocca</a>, who passed away last week,&nbsp;shared her experiences with us of working with young children in museums as well as public schools. Observing the world around her informs her own art and has allowed&nbsp;her to help others think creatively. Art of the past also offers an ongoing and critical connection:&nbsp;"I believe—I’m sure many other artists do too—when an artist looks at a work of art from any period or culture and feels a connection with it, is drawn to it, it becomes a part of them and comes out in a very personal way."&nbsp; My message still to anyone who may be able to buy a work of art right now, in these seemingly worst of times, is to reconsider why art is what is left behind once we are gone or after what surely seemed like total destruction. Art that survives the ages has the timeless ability to connect us to someone, some thing, some time.&nbsp;To buy a work of art is to invest in an artist’s unique talent and be able to admire and learn from it everyday.&nbsp; Art is something that can never really be cancelled.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As this crisis goes on, in addition to making every effort to stay home and to keep others healthy while also sending love to those are sick or caring for the sick, we are especially mindful of the financial pain that galleries, artists and museums are experiencing while their doors are closed and their exhibition plans are in limbo. We are looking at the abundance and diversity of art in the Chicago region with fresh eyes, and while we enthusiastically cheerlead all there is to see from home, we know that there is a real cost to be borne by small galleries and nonprofits that have put effort into shows that aren't happening. They need your support, whether it's a message of "I love what you're doing" or a request for a catalog, or most of all, a sale. Everyone's resources are so precious right now, but if you are moved by a work of art at a gallery, see if you can buy it. If you're browsing a museum site, make a donation or become a member. It all helps share hope that the crisis will be over but not the art.&nbsp;So, maybe someday we'll get a 360° camera and do these tours properly, but we hope that for the most part we just get back to real gallery hopping and seeing art in person – for our sakes yes, but mostly so that artists and the cultural lifeblood of the country can keep going and do not have to step back from what they love to do and from what they are able to share with the public.&nbsp;Until then, go image by image and dive into individual websites.&nbsp;•After going to the Northside to the West Side, we are here now in Hyde Park with an eye on the University of Chicago's arts campus as well as three other spaces located nearby.&nbsp;I continue to emphasize that in-person is far superior to virtual, but right now, virtual is much better than not at all!&nbsp;And don't forget if you really like something you see online, chances are you and a dealer or artist can figure out how to physically get it to you despite the current climate. Cai’s process involves composing the painting on the paper, laying it on the ground and distributing gunpowder, then detonating the powder along the images he had sketched. Creative Digital Outreach From Local Art Spaces During COVID-19

<html><head></head><body>By GINNY VAN ALYEAFor being stuck at home, time seems to be flying, or maybe it's just that the world seems to change at a pace I would not have believed just two or three weeks ago. As we continue to try to keep up with the many updates from around the world, about art as well as many other topics, we recognize the calm that comes with focus. We have been tempted to try to do everything for everyone (we'll throw a benefit, we'll lobby congress!) but we come back to CGN's core purpose since 1983: cheerleading galleries, artists and the visual arts. Realizing that our long-held purpose still has meaning, even now, we have been energized to consider our content in new ways, ie: how do we get people to look at OUR art spaces during this lockdown? Nothing against scrolling virtual Google tours of international museums, but there is much to see here at home.&nbsp;So, here is number two in our new "necessity-is-the-mother-of-invention" virtual gallery tour series, which of course isn't really using any special technology other than screenshots and cut and paste, but we're working with what we've got.&nbsp;This tour takes you to a part of West Town where a cluster of varied and notable spaces live. Four out of these five have moved to the area within the past 3 years. So, as I just wrote in my <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2020/3/publisher-s-letter-living-a-post-openings-art-scene">recent letter</a> about continuing to support galleries and artists virtually while we all hunker down at home for the time being, find some time between Zoom calls and FaceTiming to view art on that home screen.I will always emphasize that in-person is far superior to virtual, but right now, virtual is much better than not at all!&nbsp;And don't forget if you really like something you see online, chances are you and a dealer or artist can figure out how to physically get it to you despite the current climate. Collector groups like Collectors Circle provide social opportunities to access galleries and private collections, which the Chicago Artists Resource now housed on CAC's website offers a central hub for arts jobs postings as well as available art spaces. CAC hosts many exhibitions and events all year. Circle Contemporary hosts year-round exhibitions with guest curators and artists from inside and outside the studio. Now, WFH myself, I am giving it a try. I will always emphasize that in-person is far superior to virtual, but right now, virtual is much better than not at all!&nbsp;Traditional gallery walks let people stroll through galleries and view current exhibitions while talking to gallery owners about their program and to artists about their work. &nbsp;At its heart, a gallery walk is an interactive means of discovery. While popping in and out of local galleries, you spend time in a neighborhood, visit a district restaurant or bar, and you enjoy the buzz of being part of something as it happens.&nbsp;In Chicago I've always been proud that I can recommend gallery visits wholeheartedly because dealers are friendly and eager to share knowledge - none of that pretentious nonsense that other cities are known for. But an intimidation factor still remains for some, so again, a win here for the ease and comfort of digital browsing, without the panic that in-person art wandering at a fair or gallery can sometimes induce.And don't forget if you really like something you see online, chances are you and a dealer or artist can figure out how to physically get it to you despite the current climate. CGN Virtual Gallery Tour: Northside, Wicker Park / Bucktown / Logan Square

And Friday night openings were the place to be.&nbsp;That tradition continues today, though galleries are not as concentrated as they once were, and a younger generation of collectors often encounters art first via social media such as Instagram. At Chicago Truborn</figcaption></figure>&nbsp;We desperately hope that things will return to normal as soon as possible, so we can once again enjoy art, and other people, in person again. We know that they will, but it's been unsettling to not know when. Meanwhile, while galleries and spaces that are home to so much art and that help support the careers of independent artists are left with their doors closed, their websites and social feeds are open 24/7. Each must find new ways to continue to make sales in order to support their artists as well as pay the rent.&nbsp;I implore you to remember that galleries are small businesses, and artists are all self-employed. What they sell does more than keep you in style for a season. It educates, enlightens, uplifts, reminds, humbles and transcends. And for each person it is different.&nbsp;I am looking at the art in my own home more often right now, spending time with favorite pieces – some of which were gifts from friends and artists, others that belonged to my husband before we were married and which add to the vibrancy and eclecticism in our apartment. Art has never left our home once it has come in. My children notice things in works that I have never considered before. Making art is keeping our spirits up daily right now. It's clear that art is a valuable part of our life and daily environment.&nbsp;Keep looking at art even while you're not attending openings, exhibitions and art fairs. Home in on what you like right now. And keep all those artists and art professionals WFH (working from home, in case you hadn't heard) actually busy – send them emails, share your social comments, or pick the phone. COVID-19 Updates and Temporary Area Museum Closures

The 57th St. Art Fair, celebrating it’s 73rd year on June 6+7 in Hyde Park, announced its two Newcomer Award recipients: Ceramics artist <a href="http://www.katetremel.com/">Kate Tremel</a> of Ann Arbor, MI and jewelry designer <a href="https://www.pazsintes.com/">Paz Sintes</a> of Brooklyn, NY&nbsp; Each year the Newcomer Awards are chosen from the jury’s top scoring new artists from a total of almost 300 applications. In the first stage of jurying each jury member carefully and independently reviews each of these applications, composed of artists’ images, statements, and descriptions of their work. “Every year after the first stage of jurying is complete, the committee looks forward to our meeting where we all gather and the jurors review the highest scoring new artists to determine our Newcomer Award or Awards,” said Cate Slighton, 57th St. Art Fair Committee Member. “Images are reviewed and after lengthy discussions and a several step voting process the jury comes to a consensus on their final decisions. We eagerly look forward to meeting the artists and seeing their work in person at the June event.” &nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417899/kgdaoj3m6qztu9bfmjsu.jpg"><figcaption>Ceramic art by Kate Tremel</figcaption></figure> Tremel began working in clay 30 years ago at the local community art center in Middlebury, VT. She went on to combine her academic studies of Spanish and Anthropology during a year abroad in Lima, Peru where she worked under José Luis Yamunaqué and studied the changing dynamic of traditional ceramic production in his native Chulucanas, Piura (1988-89). Tremel went on to study with Tony Hepburn at Cranbrook Academy of Art where she received her MFA in 1995. She has continued to explore her interest in other cultures, participating in residencies at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Japan (1996) and in Aix en Provence (2005-06) and Paris, France (2011-12). She is currently a lecturer at the Penny Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where she also maintains a home studio. She shows her work in galleries and fine art and craft shows nationally. &nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417899/gackzps3msnhe4pfo8ek.gif"><figcaption>Leaf necklace by Paz Sintes</figcaption></figure> Barcelona born and former apparel designer, Sintes, now living in New York, started to develop her handmade textile jewelry line in 2005. The lightness and freedom of Fred Astaire’s dance, jazz music, retro- cinema, contemporary art, and most notably, the luxuriousness of textiles inspire the Paz Sintes collection. After working for several years in the fashion industry as a clothing designer in Barcelona, Paris and Saint Petersburg, Paz created her light jewelry using Haute Couture European fabrics and vintage laces, guipures and passementeries embroidery. She designs by creating forms, cutting patterns which are then hand stitched, reinforced, dyed, as well as numerous other techniques. The 57th Street Art Fair is a two-day outdoor celebration of the visual arts held in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, adjacent to the University of Chicago campus and President Barack Obama's home. Considered the Midwest’s oldest juried art fair, the 57th Street Art Fair attracted 200 artists and 25,000 attendees to this premier art and cultural event in 2019. Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show Postponed Until Fall 2020

Gallery openings are a great excuse to get out into spaces and to mingle with other art lovers and to meet with artists.&nbsp;But there are other ways to explore art spaces and to engage with culture without even leaving home.
