For nearly two decades, Alan Koppel Gallery has played a leading role in introducing contemporary international artists to American audiences. In addition to organizing extensive solo and group exhibitions of new work by gallery artists, the gallery maintains an inventory of select primary and secondary works by leading artists from the major movements in 20th Century American and European Art. Artists to first exhibit with us in Chicago include renown artists such as Robert Moskowitz, Bruce Conner and Jacques Villeglé, younger artists like Edward Lipski and Katharina Bosse, and the estate of Eugéne Leroy.In the mid-1990s, Alan Koppel’s successful private gallery turned public with the opening of his first space in Chicago’s John Hancock Center where the first solo exhibition was new work by Peter Halley. In 2001, the gallery moved and expanded its presence to a 4,000 square foot gallery in Chicago’s River North gallery district. The inaugural blockbuster exhibition paired new work by Jacques Villeglé with furniture by Jean Prouve. The International Currents Gallery of the John David Mooney Foundation exhibits and offers residencies to international artists whose challenging work push boundaries and explore new territories. Lectures, workshops, and Master Classes are interwoven into Chicago’s diverse creative communities; exhibitions run concurrently in three galleries, each 4,000 sq.ft.A special emergency fund, the Ukrainian Art Bridge Fellowship, was created after the Russian invasion to give safety and respite to at-risk artists and their families. Ten displaced Ukrainians have been supported to date with more residencies planned for 2024.The Albert I. Goodman Collection of wartime paintings, posters, and drawings from the 1960 and 70’s is on view in the third-floor gallery This unique and important collection serves as a study center for cross-cultural investigations.
