Milwaukee artist Jean Roberts-Guequierre engages with visual sources from the past that evoke the dreamworlds of Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch (ca. 1450 - 1516) and Pieter Breughel the Elder (ca. 1525-1530 - 1569). Adopting the visual vocabulary of those early masters of the moralizing and fanciful pleasure domes and hellscapes, Jean reimagines the imagery to describe the travails of modern life, particularly the experiences of middle-aged women. Her paintings recontextualize the male centric gaze of the past, placing women as powerful actors and voices, unbound by contemporary ideals of beauty and size.
