Perspective Gallery’s January 2023 Exhibition: Lincoln and Alice: Works by Julie Cowan and Julie Meridian
Julie Cowan's recent works about Abraham Lincoln will be shown in the Perspective Gallery in Evanston. Motivated by an artist residency about Lincoln, Cowan researched and became entangled in the complicated ideas and person who was Abraham Lincoln. She set out to create a series of works to demonstrate the proposition that we can and should deeply think about, admire and always question our history. Cowan uses lithography and other drawing techniques in these works on paper, always starting with a photographic image.
The title of Julie Meridian's series is Alice. Her project is an adventure into the realm of childhood and curiosity. But also, like Lewis Carroll’s themes in Alice in Wonderland, it’s an archetypal story about time and memory, about love and grief, about seeing the magic in ordinary things and abandoning all caution to take a risk.
The show opens on Thursday, January 5th, 2023 There will be a public reception on Saturday, January 7th 4-7 p.m. Cowan and Meridian will discuss their work during a presentation on Thursday, January 19th, at 7 p.m. The exhibit will close on Sunday, January 29th.
