Eugene Von Bruenchenhein relished incorporating quasi popular scientific theory as background for his creative process. Never substantiated by fact, he relied on his self-taught instincts and imagination to provide him with material and ideas about which his paintings seemed relentless in exploring. So too, the beauty and the strength of any piece of art work relies on similar principles of “seeing” and “understanding” the world around us. This group show of Carl Hammer Gallery artists demonstrates this “scratching of the surface” notion in paying homage to the Bruenchenesian theory that we have only looked in the mirror, not [at] what is concealed behind.
