This January 2022, Perspective Gallery presents Through A New Lens, an exhibition by seven internationally-recognized iPhoneographers. The exhibit, curated by museum professional, art historian and photographer, Gina Costa, demonstrates a broad range of styles and approaches used by mobile technology. Works range from traditional, “straight” photographs, to abstract and highly “apped” works of art. Visitors to the exhibition will observe the incredible span of possibilities mobile technology permits.

The evolution of mobile photography can be understood as the logical next step of developments in the history of photography. Technically, what preceded the mobile photography movement led naturally to its adoption, becoming an important world-wide art movement. The camera on mobile phones has redefined picture-making within this historical arc, and has shifted the discourse and boundaries of what we consider a "photograph”.

This exhibition provides a small glimpse to how a mobile device is not only a convenient device in one’s pocket, but also a powerful creative tool harnessed by these artists to redefine how we understand picture-making. The question before us now is: What is the next technical advancement mobile photography is paving the way for?

Exhibiting photographers are: Juta Jazz, of Cyprus; Manuela Matos Montiero, of Portugal; Amineh Hovanesian, of France and Iran; Oola Cristina Omichi of various global locations; Jane Schultz, Stephen Murphy and Gina Costa of the U.S.A.

Through A New Lens goes on view on Thursday, January 6, with a public reception on Saturday, January 8 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Curator, Gina Costa, will give a talk on Sunday, January 23 at 4:00 p.m. The  exhibition will be on view through Sunday, January 30.
