This exhibition connects past to present and takes an explorative look at what it might mean to confidently bask in black ancestral power today.As an artist, Affen is heavily inspired by culture, motherhood, family and love. For this exhibition in particular, he has found inspiration through the people he has met and has felt compelled to tell their stories. Each piece contains a character reimagined by Affen, accompanied by thoughtfully placed objects, patterned backgrounds or abstract elements, all within a setting or occasion. Incorporating color, strong composition and Ankara patterned fabrics, Affen’s art is visual poetry, bursting forth with relentless energetic expression.About the Artist Affen Segun was born in 1993 in Lagos, Nigeria. A native of Bayelsa State, he discovered his love for art at a young age, and later got enrolled in a roadside art shop to start to hone his skills. Affen is a contemporary artist who is motivated by Black culture and sees Black Culture, his culture, as a source of inspiration for his art. His passion for creating portraits brought to life through the use of acrylic hues, African patterned fabrics and his ability to capture emotions on the faces of his muses has attracted a large audience for his works (over 18K Instagram followers). Affen has created paintings for several Nigerian celebrities such as, Mayorkun, Skiibii, Zlatan, Davido, Wizkid and others. Affen is an artist on the rise and has been internationally recognized and awarded for his talent. Currently living in Chicago, her art practice highlights the transformation and manipulation of materials. As a self-described “visual archaeologist,” Mrs. Lewis considers the intersection of the natural, spiritual, and scientific worlds. Through our current landscape, she observes nature’s perseverance and ability to adapt, and asks how we might coexist in harmony. Pattern, repetition, and constant movement form the foundation of her work. By weaving nature, technology, destruction, and beauty, she presents her intuition of the surreal and the real.&nbsp;The fluidity of her ability to transform materials reflect her mastery of ballet as well as her endeavors in film. She began in architecture, receiving a BS in Architectural Studies from University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, and the L’ecole D’architecture des Versailles, France. Her art is held in private collections around the world, and has been exhibited widely, for example at the Union League Chicago, Saugatuck Center of the Arts, Hyde Park Art Center, and The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art. Various honors have been bestowed on her, among them residencies at Chicago Public Schools and Lyseloth Musikerwohnhaus Basel, Switzerland. Her awards include Best in Show at Governor State University and the Black Creativity/Green Art Award from the Museum of Science and Industry.

Cydney M. Lewis: Beauty Amongst the Darkness

Chantala Kommanivanh is an emerging Laotian American artist. Kommanivanh's work is inspired from old family photographs and found images representing his childhood. His work uses paint and loose canvas, often collage and layered with drawn and painted marks, areas of thick paint and thin stains of color to explore his experience as a member of a refugee family. There are glimpses of a displaced youth negotiating a new cultural landscape, family ties, and various aspects of identity and urban life in his work. His paintings combine colorful and sometimes aggressive abstraction with moments of sensitive photographic clarity...perhaps an appropriate analogy to an engaged life. Kommanivanh's work has been displayed in four solo exhibitions in Chicago and numerous group and invitational exhibitions across the U.S. He received his M.F.A. at UW-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts, studying painting and drawing. He has achieved numerous awards such as the prestigious Union League Civic &amp; Arts Foundation award and a two time A.O.P. Fellowship award recipient. With unmistakable style and an integrity owed to tradition, Keelan’s paintings meld a dexterous attention to detail, while utilizing innovative techniques and expressive abstraction. Often commissioned for his introspective portrait work, Keelan has completed paintings for private collections across the country and in Canada, and for institutions such as the progressive Holy Paraclete in Providence, Rhode Island. Contracted by Leo Burnett for ComEd’s 2012 Metamorfridges project, Keelan transformed a discarded refrigerator into a striking piece of interactive art, subsequently displayed along Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. His work has earned him noteworthy and monetary awards, and features in such publications as Bluecanvas and Greenbeard magazines. Keelan McMorrow: Endless Struggle

Jaime Foster is a mixed-media artist and illustrator, currently living just outside of Chicago. Her work has been shown in galleries throughout the US as well as internationally. Elephant Room Gallery is excited to present Messejah Washington's debut solo exhibition at the gallery, “Love is Omega”, a series of oil paintings and sculptures. The exhibition opens on Friday, June 24th from 6 to 9pm and will run through August 6th. The gallery is located at 704 S Wabash Ave. in the South Loop neighborhood of Chicago. All events in conjunction with the exhibition are free and open to the public.“Love is Omega” is a body work that the artist has been working on for the past 4 years and it is dedicated to his Great Grandmother Omega. Inspired by Frantz Fanon’s “Wretched of the Earth”, this body of work serves as an archive of Messejah’s life as a colonized being in America through his painted reinterpretations of photographs of children in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, heavily influenced by his own family’s photo archive.“My work is centered on themes of identity, decolonization, white supremacy, the great migration, the innocence of children and my own mortality.....The purpose of my work is to archive the times in which we live, to highlight the journey of my ancestors and the struggles we continue to face in Chicago. I believe the world will change drastically so it’s important to document what’s happening in this period as honestly as we can for future generations to learn from.” - MessejahThe exhibition is full of symbols such as the matador hat, ball and chain, prison outfit and ruff collar. The symbols have specific meanings throughout history and have a very personal connection for the artist. Messejah often paints himself and his siblings in various scenes taken from childhood photos, surrounded by these symbols. The style of work can almost be described as child-like but refined. The artist’s techniques in oil painting are to use bold colors, clear imagery and heavy symbolism. The faces of his subjects are imperfect at times, introducing a feeling of disorder while the subjects are frozen in this time capsule of memories and moments.About the ArtistMessejah Washington is a multidisciplinary artist born on the South Side of Chicago. At an early age he was exposed to the arts by his father, visual artist Dale Washington. Messejah’s work is centered around his ancestral journey from the American South, life in Chicago and his identity as a Black American living under colonialism. He works with the intent to archive personal memories through paintings, poetry, cinematography, and sculpture. Recently, Messejah returned from Florence, Italy after receiving lessons in classical sculpting. He is interested in learning classical techniques in order to perfect his skills as an artist and become more comfortable with various mediums and bending the rules. He is currentlyseeking funding to continue his lessons in Florence later this year and hopes to bring that knowledge back to Chicago to classically train a new generation of artists.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Messejah Washington: Love is Omega

Elephant Room Gallery is excited to present Chicago-based artist, Fantasía Ariel’s 2nd solo exhibition entitled, “Plucked”. The exhibition opens on Friday, May 20th with a public reception from 6 to 9pm and will be on view through June 18th. The gallery is located at 704 S Wabash Avenue in the South Loop Neighborhood of Chicago.“Plucked” is a reference to flowers. Fantasía found a parallel between flowers and the portrayal of women, especially in film. The leading lady typically fills a void for the main character, who is usually male. She “is not like other women” and “brightens up the room”. They are like a bouquet of vibrancy in a bland room. The artist wanted to take the idea of these women, plucked from life and inserted into someone else’s discovery of themselves, and explore the women in her own life on a deeper level. What is their life about? What are their struggles? Where do they come from and where do they dream of going?This exhibition is an intimate collection of painted portraits of women by the artist and many of them, photographed by the artist as well. These personal sessions were an integral part of the process for this work. Fantasía asked them questions, listened to their stories, and worked to understand their ambitions and fears. With that knowledge, the artist was able to capture their character in a moment through facial expression and body language; presenting them as the main character of their own story and not just as an accompaniment or decoration. The artist’s ability to paint her subjects in a realistic manner, while incorporating vibrant colors and simpler backgrounds, pulls her subjects almost off the canvas and into the room with us. “Plucked” reminds us that we all are truly unique and our experiences, whether painful or pleasurable, shape our character and add beauty to our existence.&nbsp;About the ArtistFantasía Ariel is a Chicago native artist. She especially enjoys portraying women through her drawings and paintings. With a background in photography and creative writing, she’s currently exploring different ways to tell stories. She wants to showcase the delicate nature and importance of storytelling through imagery. Fantasía has recently been leaning back into her practice of photography to aid her paintings.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A solo exhibition by Darin Latimer opens in February at Elephant Room Gallery.“SuperDeath Pt. 1 (Let it Bleed)” is Darin’s 2nd solo exhibition at Elephant Room Gallery. Since the last exhibition 3 years ago, a lot has changed not only in the world, but for the artist personally. Just before the Pandemic and his 1st show at the gallery, the artist was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. In response, Darin created around 200 new works with fervent energy. The title for this exhibition is a direct reflection of the incurable diagnosis. There have been advances since the initial diagnosis 2 years ago that offer some hope of a prolonged life. For the artist, the diagnosis and the subsequent state of the world have collided, resulting in changes in his art and art-making process.Darin is a devotee of that misunderstood quote from Matisse, that art should be a comfortable armchair at the end of the day. This does not necessarily mean he was saying that art should be easy but that it should hold out some hope of consolation. This consolation could be for solely the creator of the art or for the viewer. No matter the outcome and reception of the audience, art-making is a personal journey for the artist and to know the context in which the artist creates the work helps to further inform how we take it all in.Darin is not a formally trained artist but is a scholar of art and literature (food and movies too). His considerable library of Art Books garnered more of his attention when the pandemic started. He turned inward, revisiting books that he hadn’t touched for 20 years. “I fixated on rooms depicted in paintings, compressed, even crushed spaces - back to my old formative heroes - Picasso, Giacometti and, particularly Matisse (Cezanne and Cecily Brown too...). Near the end, Picasso did 6 dozen versions of ‘Las Meninas’ by Velazquez (to whom I am related by marriage). I made one too (and it will be just One) but it was for the same reason. It’s the fulcrum of this show and it is not a characteristic work.” - DarinFor Darin, it is Matisse, who, finally, informs this new work. The exuberance and inexhaustibility can be felt in “SuperDeath Pt. 1 (Let it Bleed)”. It is a culmination of select works created during quarantine but the bulk of it from the last 6 months. Darin’s primary mediums are Krink Ink markers and acrylic paint on paper, canvas and panel. Abstracted figures, solid colors, lines and shapes cover the work. Each piece contains its own unique story and purpose but all inspired by everything that Darin loves about life and art. One might say that the exhibition is the birth of many works inspired by our impending death. Wabash Ave. in the South Loop Neighborhood of Chicago.“There is Still Magic Here” is a new series of paintings illustrating everyday, overlooked landscapes as an agent for exploring the wonder in our daily lives. Over the past year, Cronin began the habit of taking daily walks. It was during these walks that she would stop to photograph seemingly mundane urban surroundings which in that moment, beckoned to her. The resulting paintings are a rich representation of the magic the artist felt when viewing these landscapes. Symphonies of color and bursts of neon brushstrokes meld with the masterful realism that Cronin is best known for. “In these liminal spaces, I found magic. I decided to let go of my rules and dive into that world.” - CroninArtists often create their best work when they step outside of what they feel they should be creating and focus on the feeling; getting lost in their work. The work becomes a parallel universe in which they live and we only experience through observation of the resulting works. “There is Still Magic Here” is a personal journey for Cronin that documents her feelings on these walks while also reflecting a universal sense of wonder and mystery. There is something extraordinary about the emotion Cronin has conveyed within these exterior landscapes and how they interact with the viewer. We are not solely viewing a landscape painting by an artist but rather, we are experiencing a moment in time that is identical to what the artist experienced. In support of her recent series documenting the detrimental impacts of climate change, she was awarded a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation and a fellowship by the Vermont Studio Center. Jennifer’s work has been featured on NPR, Newcity and Sixty Inches from Center. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Elmhurst Art Museum, Museo Internazionale Italia Arte and the Grand Rapids Public Museum as well as galleries at Google and Argonne National Laboratory. Her work was awarded best in show by juror Eric Fischl in a group exhibition at the Buchanan Center for the Arts. There is Still Magic Here: A Solo Exhibition of Oil Paintings by Jennifer Cronin

Elephant Room Gallery presents an October 1st - 15th retrospective exhibition honoring legendary graffiti and street artist Jason “The-7-ist” Brooks Golden. The event will memorialize and pay tribute to the 7th year of his passing by sharing previously unreleased works including paintings, drawings, wheat pastes, zines, letters, photos of tags and murals, some of which will be available for sale. The reception on Friday, October 1st from 6 to 10pm is free and open to the public with masks required. SEVE, was one of Milwaukee’s first prolific graffiti writers and one of the founding members of the FCR Crew. By the mid-1990's, he was one of several local graffiti artists sentenced to unprecedented jail time and fines. Upon his release, he moved to Chicago, becoming an influential part of the emergent Chicago street art scene.Inspired by American folk art/tales, Hollywood horror imagery, late 70's American punk rock and early 80s hip-hop, Golden’s indigenous and African-American heritage is reflected in the owls and pyramid themes frequently appearing in his work. Adopting the catch phrase "Be Golden”, the artist used visual symbolism, humor and allegory to explore the commonalities of American, Asian and African cultures on the American footprint.Golden’s passing from Type 1 Diabetes at age 40 left a tremendous void in the Chicago street art and graffiti scene. Forever Golden: The Life and Times of Jason Brooks

Artist Dredske Addresses Commercialism &amp; CreativityElephant Room Gallery is excited to announce a solo exhibition by Chicago-based Artist and Muralist, Dredske (Terence Byas) September 3rd - 25th. Opening night will be Friday, September 3rd from 6 to 9pm. The gallery is located at 704 S Wabash Ave. in the South Loop Neighborhood of Chicago.Dredske is tapped into current moods and trends, translating that through imagery and collage. This particular body of work addresses intellectual property rights and its role in art. The artist focuses much of his attention on the Supreme brand and logo because of its prominence in the streetwear market and the fact that their logo, white text in italicized Futura Oblique font inside a red box, is an appropriation of artist Barbara Kruger’s text in her artwork. Ironically, Supreme sued a clothing brand called Married to the Mob in 2013 for using their text logo on a shirt. Kruger’s brilliant response in an email attachment to Complex is what inspired the title for Dredske’s “A Ridiculous Clusterf#*k”.Viewers will be transported into the mind of the artist as bit and pieces of sketchbook paper, magazines, logos and repetitive patterns are collaged with original detailed portraits of characters and abstract shapes. Each piece is its own commentary on culture and commerce, commercialism and creativity. The inspiration behind the exhibition goes beyond the specific reference to Supreme and Barbara Kruger and addresses corporate control, asking us how artists fit into this commercialized and brand controlled society. If art can be turned into branding or if branding is art, who or what is influencing us? The purpose of this body of work is, in his own words, “...to play within the parameters of inspiration and imitation. To question the purpose of intellectual property and its role in art.” - DredskeDredske’s characters dominate a lot of his mural and studio work. He often portrays the women he grew up with in different styles in an attempt to bring funky and unique representations of women of color into public spaces. Other recurring figures in his work are cartoon character heads with spray cans, which the artist refers to as “Air Painters”. These characters represent graffiti and street artists and are meant to add whimsy and commentary to his work. They have become a signature for Dredske.Terence Lashawn Byas, also known as “Dredske,” was born in Chicago in 1982 and currently lives and works in the city as a painter, muralist, and illustrator. His work is a playful commentary on issues regarding society, technology and culture. He’s inspired by the middle ground where fantasy meets reality, western and eastern pop cultures and his own cultural background and experiences. Dredske uses acrylic paint, collage, aerosol paint, and inject transfers as his medium.
