The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago today announced <a href="https://mcachicago.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c24ba7c5a91cefd699dc985e1&amp;id=b95b6e550d&amp;e=95b957c616">The Living End: Painting and Other Technologies, 1970–2020</a>, an international, intergenerational group exhibition opening on November 9, 2024, and running through April 13, 2025, in the Griffin Galleries of Contemporary Art. The exhibition examines the different methods artists have used to challenge or intervene in the practice of painting and the role of painters over the past 50 years. Countering the recycled discourse that “painting is dead,” the exhibition suggests that painting remains in a constant state of renewal and rebirth.The Living End considers the impact of various representational technologies and production methods, such as the use of video and still cameras; computers, the internet, and screens; automation; and the performing body. Comprising paintings, performance, video, and installation, the exhibition examines the ways artists working across media have challenged the mythologies of painting, ultimately changing our understanding of what constitutes a painting, how they can be produced, and who can be considered a painter. The Living End emphasizes a critical reading of painting, its tropes, its prominence in the Western canon, and its historical associations with privilege. As technology increases access to the means of production, the model of the painter as singular “genius” is being decentralized, opening abstract and representational painting to new perspectives.The exhibition surveys the early role of computers in painting and image production, following experiments with computer-assisted graphics in the mid-1960s, and connecting to the prevalence of screens and artists mining online digital and social media culture today. The Living End also examines the cyclical relationship between still photography and painting, as well as how video has allowed artists working in performance the possibility of critiquing the trajectory and status of painting. Lastly, the exhibition looks toward the automation of painting, where the artist’s hand is largely absent, complicating the role of artist as producer and the market’s enduring interest in painting as commodity. In the autumn of 2023,&nbsp;the Driehaus Museum held an open call for submissions, asking artists to identify a material from the Museum, research its history, and produce site-specific responses that connect the fabric of the building to distant shores, traditions, and ideologies. The commissioned works connect the past and present in original and compelling ways, linking different cultures to specific materials and&nbsp;allowing visitors to see the Nickerson Mansion through different perspectives. An original idea of guest curator&nbsp;Dr. Giovanni Aloi,&nbsp;organized by the Driehaus Museum,&nbsp;this dynamic, three-floor exhibition includes works from artists&nbsp;Rebecca Beachy, Jonas Becker, Olivia Block, Barbara Cooper, Richard Hunt, IOTO, Beth Lipman, Luftwerk, Dakota Mace, Bobbie Meier, Laleh Motlagh, Ebony G. Patterson, Jefferson Pinder,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Edra Soto,&nbsp;working across a variety of disciplines.&nbsp;A Tale of Today: Materialities&nbsp;will be on view at the Driehaus Museum,&nbsp;50 E. Key&nbsp;states, “It has been wonderful to work with Dr. Aloi, whose own unique perspective on the connection between art and nature supports the concepts of this exhibition. This exhibition explores how materials themselves can be storytelling devices, bridging our modern times with those that came before.” Guest Curator&nbsp;Giovanni Aloi&nbsp;adds, “For this exhibition at the Driehaus Museum, it was clear to me that I had no other choice but to directly engage with the building’s incredibly rich material essence. I became fascinated with the idea of following materials, tracing the often invisible connections that tie this one-of-a-kind architectural gem to a multitude of historical, ecological, and cultural universes. It was wonderful to steward the creative approaches of this group of artists through this process.” Exhibition-related programming will include two free community days, plus engaging panel discussions with both the curator and the artists that examine the hidden cultural, economic, political, and ecological histories and networks reflected in the Museum’s materials. ABOUT THE ARTISTSRebecca Beachy&nbsp;is a Chicago-based artist, writer, and educator whose practice explores the complex relationships we have with the natural world. She holds an MFA in Studio Arts and an MA in Art History from the University of Illinois, Chicago, and currently teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Jonas N.T. Becker&nbsp;is an interdisciplinary, research-based artist. Recent exhibitions include a survey at Wexner Center for the Arts and exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Photography, and Nazarian/Curcio. He works in Waiteville, WV, and Chicago, IL, where he is an Associate Professor at the School of the Art Institute. Olivia Block&nbsp;is a Chicago-based, experimental music composer, performer, and contemporary media artist. Her research-driven installations include field recordings, found sounds, found images, electronic sounds, video, and objects. She is known for presenting sound work through installations of multiple speakers. Block regularly performs at festivals and tours throughout America, Europe, and Japan.&nbsp; Barbara Cooper&nbsp;works in sculpture, drawing, and public art, as well as designing gardens and structures for dance and theater. She has had numerous exhibitions, residencies and fellowships, both in the US and internationally, and has used them as opportunities to research and engage with new environments and geographies. A graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art and Cleveland Institute of Art, Cooper’s work is in the collections of many esteemed museums. Richard Hunt&nbsp;is one of the most recognized American sculptors of the past century. His distinguished art career spanned seven decades. During his lifetime, Hunt held over 160 solo exhibitions and is represented in more than 100 public museums across the globe. Hunt passed away in 2023.&nbsp; Industry of the Ordinary&nbsp;(IOTO) is a two-person conceptual art collaborative, made up of Chicago-based artists and educators Adam Brooks and Mathew Wilson. Their work is often performative or sculptural, incorporating audience participation and interaction with the artists.&nbsp;For over 20 years, they have used performance, installation, objects, and interventions to explore and celebrate “ordinariness” and to challenge and elevate the everyday experience into an endeavor worthy of study and veneration. Beth Lipman&nbsp;is a glass artist who is renowned for her sculptural compositions which recreate the bounty and visual sumptuousness of Renaissance and Baroque still-life paintings, particularly 17th-century Dutch scenes. Lipman earned a BFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 1994. Luftwerk&nbsp;is comprised of artists Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero. Since founding Luftwerk in 2007, their practice has developed a significant body of work that explores the interplay of light, color, and space through the exploration of data, nature, history, and architecture. Their work is multi-faceted, taking the form of installations, site-specific interventions, and artwork, engaging with landscapes and architecture as well as galleries, museums, and art centers. Dakota Mace&nbsp;is an interdisciplinary artist who focuses on translating the language of Diné history and beliefs. Mace received her MA and MFA degrees in Photography and Textile Design at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her BFA in Photography from the Institute of American Indian Arts. As a Diné (Navajo) artist, her work draws from the history of her Diné heritage, exploring the themes of family lineage, community, and identity.&nbsp; Bobbi Meier&nbsp;is a Chicago-based visual artist. She is the recipient of numerous awards from organizations including John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry Program, Illinois Arts Council, The Ragdale Foundation, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Meier has exhibited work in over 40 museums and galleries in the US and Europe. Laleh Motlagh,&nbsp;born and raised in Iran, is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Motlagh received her MFA from the University of Illinois Chicago. Ebony G. Patterson&nbsp;is a multimedia artist creating intricate, densely layered, and visually dazzling works that center the culture and aesthetics of postcolonial spaces. Patterson’s practice includes painting, photography, video, performance, sculpture, textiles, and installation. Across media, her works address themes of postcolonial space, visibility and invisibility, regeneration and mourning. Jefferson Pinder&nbsp;focuses primarily on found objects and video, He investigates identity by creating dynamic circumstances through his innovative use of materials. His work has been featured in numerous group and solo shows including exhibitions at The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Baltimore Museum of Art, Showroom Mama in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and the 11th&nbsp;Shanghai Biennale. Edra Soto&nbsp;is a Puerto Rican born interdisciplinary artist and co-director of the outdoor project space The Franklin.&nbsp;Her recent projects, which are motivated by civic and social actions, prompt viewers to reconsider cross-cultural dynamics, the legacy of colonialism, and personal responsibility. ABOUT THE CURATORDr. Giovanni Aloi&nbsp;is an author, curator, educator, and maker specializing in the histories of art and politics of aesthetics in representations of nature in art. He’s the founder and Editor in Chief of&nbsp;Antennae: The Journal of Nature in Visual Culture&nbsp;and US Correspondent for&nbsp;Esse&nbsp;Magazine – Art + Opinion. Aloi is co-editor of the University of Minnesota series&nbsp;‘Art after Nature’, and has authored four books including&nbsp;Why&nbsp;Look&nbsp;at Plants? - The Vegetal World in Contemporary&nbsp;Art&nbsp;(2019),&nbsp;Lucian Freud – Herbarium&nbsp;(2019) and the forthcoming Vegetal Entwinements (2023) co-edited with Michael Marder,&nbsp;Estado Vegetal&nbsp;(2023),&nbsp;Botanical Revolutions&nbsp;(2025), andLawn&nbsp;(2025). Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago Rooms, 2nd Floor NorthCurated by Elise Butterfieldtwo hundred and fifty-one days, a solo exhibition by Bryana Bibbs, is an artist's exploration of loss, ancestry, time, and memory. The show’s title references the span of time between the death of Bibbs' grandfather on December 18, 2023, and her grandmother on August 25, 2024, during which Bibbs, along with her mom, lived in her grandparents’ home and cared for her grandmother. In&nbsp;two hundred and fifty-one days, Bibbs incorporates the objects of her grandparents’ everyday lives into weaving and print series. Painstakingly and lovingly, she took apart hospital blankets and favorite shirts to weave them into new artifacts; she cataloged socks and adult bibs in black and white prints. Bibbs’ repetitive artistic practice and commitment to witnessing her own inner landscape lays bare the profoundly emotional and yet mundane experience of processing the death of a loved one. The Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago (MoCP) presents Regina Agu: Shore|Lines from January 23, 2024 – May 18, 2024. Drawing on methods of field work and landscape photography, Agu examines waterways and natural environments as defining sites of Black life and belonging. This exhibition presents an original commission, large-scale panoramic installation at MoCP as part of an exploration of placemaking and community memory—tracing sites and legacies of historical Black North American migration through the medium and expansive tradition of the panoramic form. Regina Agu: Shore|Lines brings together discourses of Black geographies, landscape photography, and site-specific land histories, using the methodology of landscape panorama as a format for relating ideas and themes of Black cultural memory connected to place. The exhibition includes an artist book that Agu refers to as a “field guide,” connecting her Midwest and Gulf South experiences of the landscapes. Renowned multimedia artist Dieter Roth’s preferred form, and the one he spent his lifetime pursuing, was the&nbsp;Gesamtkunstwerk, a German term for “total work of art.” Working across a diverse range of media, disciplines, and creative activities, Roth developed an artistic practice that dissolved the boundaries between art and life, upending traditional categories, hierarchies, and even timeworn notions of singular authorship. Often collaborating with other artists, including his son Björn, Roth produced an ever-expanding body of work that gestured toward the cumulative effects of a life spent making and remaking.&nbsp;The sculpture&nbsp;Balabild 5&nbsp;(c. 1975–2005), made in collaboration with Björn Roth, is a complex portrait of their shared creative life, expressed through an array of artifacts that passed through their family art studio in Iceland. Made of materials including wooden flooring from the original studio, canvas, paint and paint tubes, brushes, lightbulbs, photographs, and other found items,&nbsp;Balabild 5&nbsp;was developed over decades and is intended to look forever unfinished, as if the artists have frozen the energy of their studio and could step in at any moment to keep working. Body Bits: poetry, prose and performance in the gallery

Huguette Caland:&nbsp;Bribes de corps&nbsp;presents painted works by the Lebanese artist whose life and career traversed decades, continents, and media, defying both aesthetic and social conventions of her time and place. Bringing together a significant corpus of works that have rarely been seen together, the exhibition focuses on the body of work that Caland produced while living in Paris in the 1970s, the&nbsp;Bribes de corps&nbsp;[“Body Bits”] and constitutes the largest presentation of the series to date.Caland’s own body and her preoccupations with its size and its pleasures motivated much of her work throughout this period, and this exhibition introduces the languages—sometimes joyful and sometimes pain-ridden—she cultivated in shape and color to speak of her experience alongside those of other bodies. The artist also played with what Western art history categorizes as the diametrically opposed poles of abstraction and figuration, rendering the distinction between color and line indiscernible, subject positions and parts indecipherable, and making normative or binaristic gendering unimaginable even as the body parts she painted often transform into landscapes or blend into the haze of color fields.The work is contextualized in relationship to debates about gender and sexual norms in both France and Lebanon during the time. It concludes with a more recent painting from the artist’s late series of tapestry-like paintings, which bring her interest in the body and its surroundings to full force through a painterly idiom that borrows from the techniques and cultures of&nbsp;tatreez, or Palestinian embroidery. The exhibition also includes a selection of three embroidered dresses, which Caland designed and wore, and which consolidate the relationship between art and flesh in her practice. Collaboration: A Potential History of Photography in Dialogue with the MoCP Collection

The&nbsp;Driehaus Museum&nbsp;is proud to announce&nbsp;Rory McEwen: A New Perspective on Nature, an exhibition exploring the trailblazing career and legacy of Scottish artist Rory McEwen, whose work is considered one of the major turning points in the development of contemporary botanical art. Presenting over one hundred works, including sculpture and manuscripts, the exhibition reveals how McEwen forged his own personal interpretation of 20th century modernism, portraying flowers, leaves, and vegetables as individual subjects worthy of their own portraits. Establishing McEwen’s role in shaping new generations of artists, the exhibition also features the work of contemporary botanical artists who&nbsp;continue to&nbsp;shape&nbsp;McEwen’s&nbsp;artistic&nbsp;legacy today.&nbsp;Rory McEwen: A New Perspective on Nature&nbsp;will be on view at the Driehaus Museum,&nbsp;50 E. Erie Street&nbsp;from&nbsp;May 16 to August 17, 2025.&nbsp;McEwen’s vibrant paintings balance the scientific detail of traditional botanical art with a modernist perspective influenced by other visual artists of his time. A student of the Old Masters as well as his contemporaries, McEwen developed a distinctive style over the course of his career, painting on vellum and using large empty backgrounds on which his plant portraits seem to float. In his paintings, he forged his own personal interpretation of twentieth-century modernism, portraying individual flowers, leaves, and vegetables as subject matter, “as a way of getting as close as possible to what I perceive as the truth, my truth of the time in which I live.” By encompassing a rare ability to see a plant as more than “just” a plant—to imbue his paintings with a sense of his subject’s “soul”—his techniques have had a lasting impact on botanical artists today. McEwen was a modern-day Renaissance man, whose artistry extended to sculpture, poetry, and most notably, music, where he was a successful folk revival musician and host of the popular 1960’s music show, “Hullabaloo!”“We are pleased to welcome audiences to the Museum this summer with an exhibition that invites us to approach our natural surroundings with curiosity and wonder and to feature an artist who is lesser known on these shores but who embodies the kind of excellence the Museum celebrates,” says&nbsp;Driehaus Museum Executive Director&nbsp;Lisa M. He was influenced by 17th&nbsp;and 18th-century French flower painters throughout his education at Eton, including visits to the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, and his continued studies at Trinity College, Cambridge. After serving with the British Army, he discovered his passion for art. Initially a blues musician, McEwen toured the U.S. in 1956 with his brother Alexander, recording an LP for Smithsonian Folkways Records and appearing twice on the Ed Sullivan show. Back in Britain, he became known as a guitarist and singer, appearing nightly on the BBC’s&nbsp;Tonight&nbsp;show and produced, presented, and performed on the seminal music program,&nbsp;Hullabaloo. However, from 1964 until his death in 1982, McEwen focused solely on his work as a visual artist, known for his detailed work on vellum with watercolors. His posthumous 1988 exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in London is considered one of the pivotal turning points in the development of contemporary botanical art, and his techniques have had a lasting impact on botanical artists today. Rory McEwen: A New Perspective on Nature

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago announces&nbsp;<a style="color: rgb(0, 124, 137);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://visit.mcachicago.org/es/exhibitions/paul-pfeiffer-prologue-to-the-story-of-the-birth-of-freedom/" target="_blank">Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom</a>, opening May 3 and on view until August 31, 2025.&nbsp;Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom&nbsp;is a survey that covers twenty-five years of work from artist Paul Pfeiffer (b. 1966, Honolulu, HI; lives in New York), whose practice interrogates ideas of spectacle, celebrity, and mass culture. The exhibition brings together works from across Pfeiffer’s career, spanning from his early photo and video works to his latest experiments in sculpture and installation.&nbsp;Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom&nbsp;focuses on the artist’s use of media manipulation to reveal audiences’ participation in both adoration and objectification. Mining imagery from our media-saturated world, Pfeiffer recontextualizes global icons such as pop stars, film actors, and athletes through careful acts of cutting, splicing, and masking. Throughout his work, Pfeiffer interrogates what it means to consume images and culture. For Pfeiffer, the basketball court, the boxing ring, and the stadium not only serve as platforms for grand spectacles but as sites where the body politic—of a nation, of a community, of society—is imagined, defined, and contested. Spanning two and a half decades of work, the exhibition features Pfeiffer’s works in the MCA Collection, including&nbsp;Fragment of a Crucifixion (After Francis Bacon)&nbsp;(1999) and&nbsp;Self-Portrait as a Fountain&nbsp;(2000), which is part of the D.Daskalopoulos Collection Gift. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago presentation is curated by Bana Kattan, former Pamela Alper Associate Curator, with Iris Colburn, Curatorial Associate.&nbsp; ABOUT THE ARTIST Paul Pfeiffer (b. 1966, Honolulu, Hawaii)&nbsp;is an artist living and working in New York City, who has been making work in video, photography, installation, and sculpture since the late 1990s. Known for his innovative manipulation of digital media, Pfeiffer recasts the visual language of mass media spectacle to examine how images shape our awareness of ourselves and the world. Sampling footage from YouTube and other sources, he uses these to plumb the depths of contemporary culture, assessing its racial, religious, and technological dimensions. At the same time, Pfeiffer's objects and images function diachronically, establishing profound genealogies that connect contemporary culture and its many particularities to the long, seemingly remote histories of art, media, religion, and human consciousness. Pfeiffer has had many one-person exhibitions at Whitney Museum of American Art (2001); the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2003 and 2017-18); the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2005); MUSAC León, Spain (2008); Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2009); Sammlung Goetz, Munich (2011); Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Manila (2015); Inhotim, Brumadinho, Brazil (2018); and The Athenaeum, Athens, GA (2023). Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s upcoming exhibition&nbsp;<a style="color: rgb(0, 124, 137);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://mcachicago.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c24ba7c5a91cefd699dc985e1&amp;id=38939d4a2c&amp;e=4ba592fe2a" target="_blank">Pipilotti Rist: Supersubjektiv</a>&nbsp;will open on February 22 and run through September 14, 2025, in the Turner Gallery on the museum’s fourth floor.This exhibition focuses on a single artwork by Pipilotti Rist (b. 1962, Grabs, Switzerland; lives in Zürich, Switzerland), the 2001 video installation&nbsp;Supersubjektiv. In the artwork, Rist takes digital surveillance footage she filmed during a month-long trip to Japan and morphs it into a dream-like space for contemplation and curiosity, pairing the hallucinatory video with an artist-made pillow and sheepskin seating. The artwork examines nature, the built environment, and technology with wide-eyed wonder. While viewing the large-scale, wall-to-wall video, visitors are encouraged to relax in the darkened gallery and listen to its ambient electronic soundtrack, made in collaboration with composer Anders Guggisberg and featuring the familiar sounds of a dial-up internet modem as well as lyrics written and sung by Rist. Made at the turn of the millennium,&nbsp;Supersubjektiv&nbsp;traces Rist’s longing for connection in an increasingly digital and globalized world.Supersubjektiv&nbsp;is part of the D.Daskalopoulos Collection Gift, which was jointly donated to the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2022.&nbsp;Pipilotti Rist: Supersubjektiv&nbsp;is curated by Jason Foumberg, Daskalopoulos Collection Manager. ABOUT THE ARTISTPipilotti Rist (b. 1962, Grabs, Switzerland; lives in Zurich, Switzerland)&nbsp;used her childhood nickname, Lotti, with the first name of the Swedish children’s story character Pippi Longstocking to create her artistic moniker in 1982. She attended the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna from 1982 to 1986 and the Schule für Gestaltung Basel from 1986 to 1988. She produced her first video,&nbsp;I’m Not the Girl Who Misses Much&nbsp;(1986), while still at school in Basel. In it, she bounces up and down, falling out of her dress, as she repeatedly sings the title line (derived from the lyrics to a Beatles song). From 1988 to 1994, she played in a rock band called Les Reines Prochaines, at the same time developing an aesthetic language quite close to that of music videos in her art. The artist appears in many of her own videos and often sings on the soundtracks; her mother, brother, and three sisters frequently assist on the production. Rist has also developed installations such as&nbsp;Flying Room(1995) and&nbsp;Himalaya’s Sister’s Living Room&nbsp;(2000), in which video cameras and monitors are wittily deployed in furnished gallery spaces.Since Rist’s first solo exhibition, in 1984, she has had shows at the Kunstverein in Hamburg, Germany (1995), Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (1996), SITE Santa Fe (1998), Montréal Museum of Fine Arts (2000), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid (2001), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2004), Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (2007), and Museum of Modern Art in New York (2008), among other venues. Her work has also appeared in the Venice Biennale (1993, 1999, and 2005), São Paulo Biennial (1995), Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art, France (1997), Berlin Biennial (1998), International Biennial Exhibition at SITE Santa Fe (1999), Sydney Biennial (2000), and International Triennial of Contemporary Art, Yokohama (2001). She was a finalist for the Hugo Boss Prize in 1998. Rist lives and works in Zurich and in the mountains of Switzerland.
