City of Chicago Launches The Chicago Monuments Project, Led By Several Local Artists

Launching in June 2021 and running through November, the exhibition is now in its fifth year and has become one of the largest annual outdoor exhibitions to focus on​ ​contemporary sculpture and public art practices. There's a new limited-edition artwork by Karl Wirsum starting at $500

Hyde Park Art Center Announces ‘Artists Run Chicago Fund’ to Award $560K to 70 Chicago Artist-Run Spaces

Nearly all had to work very quickly to shift to full-time online programming while the public was required to stay at home. What began as a temporary, survival-response has since become more sophisticated and far reaching. The programming and business impacts of such a shift also may be here for the long term.&nbsp;We recently learned that the Chicago-based Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation—an organization that offers unrestricted grants to 175 small arts organizations in Chicago with budgets under $1 million—recently surveyed 61 of its arts grantees to garner insights on 2020 virtual programming. After VGA Zine readership skyrocketed upon the creation of the publication, seeing 7,877 page views with the first five issues, the organization will launch VGA Fireside, an artist-speaker series beginning on January 27, 2021, with hopes that it can be a hybrid program, both in-person and virtual. In a year over year comparison between 2019 and 2020, ESS's YouTube channel saw a 668% increase in engagement, their website a 270% increase in traffic, and their Instagram a 135% increase in followers. Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art compared 2020 website stats versus the year prior, and saw a 110% increase in searches, a 247% increase in social media referrals and a 380% increase in referrals from other sites. The week of their Candlelight Carols in December 2020, St. Charles Singers’ Facebook page saw a 1,035% increase in reach and 401% increase in engagement as compared to the week prior.In addition to revamping social channels, webpages, and online publications, multiple organizations explored the podcast world in 2020. Artemisia Theatre launched a female-driven podcast in 2020 entitled We Women that challenges audiences to see women in a new light. DCLI features candid video conversations among eleven Chicago-based Deaf and disabled alumni of the 3Arts Residency Fellowships at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), as well as a report that chronicles the trajectory of the Fellowship and the city’s approach to creating and supporting the Disability Art and Culture movement. She has been a neighbor, trusted colleague, straight talker, and friend all these years and is widely known and respected in the local, as well as international, art and photography community. Edelman publicly announced today that due to the economic challenges wrought by the pandemic, she is taking her eponymous gallery private, entering a new professional phase after over three decades in business.&nbsp;The press release shared below is a message from Edelman. We wish her and her gallery staff the best as they navigate the changes ahead.&nbsp;&nbsp;December 1, 2020 marked the 33-year anniversary of Catherine Edelman Gallery, a venue in Chicago showcasing contemporary fine art photography. Since its founding in 1987, CEG has established itself as one of the leading galleries in the country devoted to the exhibition of prominent living photographers, alongside new &amp; rising talent, attracting both the seasoned collector and first-time buyer.After hosting 245 public exhibitions, featuring more than 200 artists, Catherine Edelman Gallery is closing its physical space, effective January 1, 2021, and will operate as a private dealer, continuing to represent several of its gallery artists. While Edelman believes wholeheartedly in the brick-and-mortar model, the pandemic, lack of foot traffic, and cancellation of art fairs created an unsustainable reality. Edelman looks forward to this new transition that will allow her to continue working with collectors, curators, designers, &amp; consultants; participate in art fairs when they resume; and present pop-up exhibitions when warranted. In 1926, the young artist began a seven-year sojourn in Paris, where he absorbed European Modernism and was particularly influenced by the biomorphic forms, flat planes, and primary colors used by Piet Mondrian and Joan Miró. Calder used these motifs to invent his own artistic language, constructing sculptures brimming with dynamism and vibrancy.Triple Cross exudes a whimsy that belies its sophisticated construction. One of Calder’s standing mobiles, it reflects the artist’s training as a mechanical engineer, as well as his use of humble materials such as sheet metal and wire struts. A long thin rod balances on top of the swooping foundation and forms the basis of a chain-linked system of smaller rods. Biomorphic, metal shapes are attached to the terminal points of the rods and carefully counterbalance each other. The black base, all angles and curves, is a solid contrapuntal to the colorful, quivering construction that rests on top. Crancer and her husband were avid supporters of the art community in St. Louis and were incredible collectors.&nbsp; Another Calder, Petit poteau jaune (Little Yellow Post), 1963 (Lot 62) from the Crancer Estate was also sold in the October 1 auction.&nbsp; This work was offered with a pre-sale estimate of $200,000-300,000 and sold for $432,500.&nbsp;

Fourth Edition of Chicago Architecture Biennial Reinvents Format As It Kicks Off For 2021

Intersect Chicago / SOFA Announces 100+ Exhibitors For Its Virtual Fair

Live Art Nightly? Yes, Please. Art on theMART to Run Nov 12–Dec 30

<html><head></head><body><figure class="image image-style-side"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417802/btv2gababt9uli0qdzdx.jpg"><figcaption>Paul Klein, by Carol Pylant, oil on panel, 2016</figcaption></figure>By GINNY VAN ALYEAPaul Klein, a long time art dealer, critic and artist mentor in Chicago, died October 11, 2020.&nbsp;In the fall of 2014, Klein was diagnosed with Stage IV esophageal cancer that had metastasized to his liver.&nbsp;Klein's doctors gave him 6 months to live, but his family helped him to have a full and active life until the end.His wife Amy Crum shared on Facebook this week, "He had a tremendous six-year journey with cancer – a magnificent battle he fought so he could continue to grow those around him, shape the art world, and radiate love."In the early 1980s Klein founded Klein Art Works, one of the "original 16" galleries in the neighborhood that became known as River North. The gallery was one of the first to appear in the inaugural issue of the Superior/Huron Gallery News (eventually Chicago Gallery News) in 1982/83. Following the River North district fire in 1989 the gallery soon relocated to what's now the West Loop.&nbsp;Klein was also the Art Consultant/Curator for the 2.3 million square foot expansion of <a href="https://mccormickplace.com/wp-content/uploads/floor-plan-images/pdfs/art-collection-brocure.pdf">McCormick Place</a> completed in 2008. According to Klein's old ArtLetter site, it was his vision to use solely Chicago and Illinois artists at the new convention center, where all the content of the permanently installed art is Chicago and Illinois specific. The works range from a 100 foot wide painting by artist Dzine, to a steel and bronze sculpture by Preston Jackson.Klein's next chapter focused on mentoring artists, when he founded Klein Artist Works and shared his knowledge with artists looking to hone their practice as well as market their own work and practice in order to operate independently of a dealer if desired. Klein was also the editor of <a href="http://www.artletter.com">ArtLetter,</a> a personal round up of art he liked that was on view around Chicago.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417803/cdqyzdhueedrw0ulhibs.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Klein's circle of friends and colleagues was large and ever growing. On his Artist Works site he said,&nbsp;"I believe in people. I particularly believe in creative people; people who have the ability to challenge me and make my world more dynamic and a whole lot better. I want to see more artists have a bigger impact—and make my world even brighter than the one artists have already given me.The world is a troubled place. Dealer, Critic and Mentor Paul Klein Has Died

The celebration will honor ten 3Arts Awards recipients with $25,000 cash grants, and ten additional artists with $2,000 cash grants through Make a Wave. The event is being fashioned as a kind of love letter to Chicago artists, with a goal of sending joy and hope into our city and the artists who power it.”&nbsp;To elevate this year’s awards, 3Arts commissioned 15 artists to create three new works for the event, including:&nbsp;2019 awardee Sam Trump (trumpet player, singer) who will debut the World Premiere of his music video, “New World”; 2012 awardee Nejla Yatkin who digitally choreographed a dynamic “exquisite-corpse-style” score for dancers, actors, and musicians—each representing the past 12 years of awardees; and 2019 awardee Santiago X, who will present a piece to honor Native lands.&nbsp;The recipients of the 2020 3Arts Awards are:&nbsp;DanceKeyierra Collins, 3Arts/Walder Foundation Awardee<figure class="image image-style-side"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418813/fnorzpmwy52cxjvub5zk.jpg" alt="image004.jpg"></figure>Keyierra Collins is a dancer, teaching artist, and choreographer. Collins earned a BA in Dance from Columbia College Chicago where she studied various dance forms including West African, modern, jazz, ballet, hip-hop, and improvisation. As a dance artist, Collins has collaborated with several choreographers including Onye Ozuzu, Paige Cunningham, Margi Cole, Emily Stein, Anna Martine Whitehead, Dorothée Munyaneza, and Sonita Surratt, to name a few. As a choreographer, Collins explores how dance and movement can be used to heal trauma, particularly the collective and individual trauma experienced by people of the African diaspora. Having toured and worked with artists in Haiti and Nigeria, Collins wants to continue to travel and collaborate with artists around the world.&nbsp;J’Sun Howard, 3Arts/RH, Restoration Hardware Awardee<figure class="image image-style-side"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418813/gyjlbm4rkwkqgkporupr.jpg" alt="image006.jpg"></figure>Originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee, J’Sun Howard is a dancemaker, writer, and administrator. He creates intimate performances that express generous, loving, and compassionate play between Black and Brown men. He recently received an inaugural City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events' Esteemed Artist Award. Howard’s works have been presented at Links Hall, Ruth Page Center for the Arts, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Defibrillator Performance Gallery, Patrick’s Cabaret (Minneapolis), Danspace Project and the Center for Performance Research (NYC), Detroit Dance City Festival (Detroit), and the World Dance Alliance's International Young Choreographers’ Project (Kaohsiung, Taiwan). He has been commissioned by Northwestern University, Columbia College Chicago, World Dance Alliance, and The Art Institute of Chicago, among others.&nbsp;&nbsp;MusicMeagan L. McNeal is a powerhouse singer, songwriter, and recording artist. Well-versed in the genres of soul, jazz, and R&amp;B, she is known for her diverse range and soulful voice. Since embarking on her journey in 2008, McNeal went on to perform throughout the USA and across the globe. With a fervent drive and dedication, she was a backing vocalist for world-famous artists like Eminem, Common, and The O’Jays. Her energetic stage presence was embraced by audiences large and small. She attracted attention on the local circuit and received international acclaim with the release of her debut album,Mindset, in 2013. Gracing the stage of NBC’s The Voice in 2017, McNeal’s radiating vocals landed her on the team of Grammy Award-winning artist Jennifer Hudson. Those experiences lend themselves to her refined versatility and signature vocal style. In 2019, she released the song, "Roses," a haunting call to action that urges listeners to not wait another minute to live fully and give their love and gifts while they can. Her music effortlessly transcends boundaries and spreads messages of unapologetic, universal truth.&nbsp;Junius Paul, 3Arts/SIF Fund at The Chicago Community Foundation Awardee<figure class="image image-style-side"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418815/vs5y18dnqeompdvpdgkd.jpg" alt="image010.jpg"></figure>Junius Paul is an internationally recognized composer, bandleader, and acoustic and electric bassist born and raised in the Chicago area. Performance and/or recording credits include The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, Famoudou Don Moye Sun Percussion Summit, ensembles led by Roscoe Mitchell, Kahil El’Zabar, Makaya McCraven, The Fred Anderson Trio, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Vincent Davis &amp; Percussion Plus, Dee Alexander, The Curtis Fuller Quintet, Oliver Lake, Willie Pickens, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marquis Hill, KRS-One, and Donald Byrd, among others. In 2013-14, Paul served as music department faculty for Trinity Christian College. In 2017, he was the featured artist and honoree for his alma mater, St. Xavier University’s Jazz Weekend. Paul’s debut album, Ism, was released in November 2019 by International Anthem Recording Company, receiving four stars in Downbeat Magazine in addition to widespread critical acclaim from numerous platforms.&nbsp;&nbsp;Teaching ArtsLuis Álvaro Sahagun Nuño, 3Arts/Reva &amp; David Logan Foundation Awardee&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-side"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418815/wxhn7olpfnxiud0fks1n.jpg" alt="image012.jpg"></figure>Luis Álvaro Sahagun Nuño was born in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1982. His grandfather came to the United States in the 1940s under the Bracero Program, working in Chicago Heights’ steel industry. His parents found work in the fields in the late 1970s, and Nuño was brought to this country in 1985, living undocumented until naturalized in 1995 under Reagan’s Immigration Reform and Control Act. As a teaching artist with a socially engaged art practice, Nuño cultivates sacred spaces and artful experiences for students in Chicago Public Schools, universities, and museums. He is a resilient ambassador, empathetic mentor, and compassionate teacher working to empower youth and create lasting social change throughout Chicago. His work as a visual artist has been exhibited at venues including the Chicago Cultural Center; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The National Museum of Mexican Art; DePaul Art Museum; and EXPO Chicago; among many others. He received his undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and an MFA from Northern Illinois University.&nbsp;Dorian Sylvain, 3Arts Community Awardee<figure class="image image-style-side"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418816/bjnrqvzis8desgqudhwh.jpg" alt="image014.jpg"></figure>Dorian Sylvain is a painter whose color and texture explore ornamentation, pattern, and design as identifiers of cultural and historical foundations. She is a studio painter and muralist, as well as an art educator, curator, and community planner. Much of her public work addresses issues of beautification inspired by color palettes and patterns found throughout the African diaspora, particularly architecture. Core to her practice is collaborating with children and communities to elevate neighborhood aesthetics and foster shared understanding. In addition to commissioned studio and mural work, Sylvain has led public art projects over the past four decades that empower community and expose children to artmaking. Her Chicago acting credits include A Red Orchid Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Court Theater, About Face Theatre, The Hypocrites, The Second City, House Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Remy Bumppo, Victory Gardens Theatre, Paramount Theatre, The Broadway Playhouse, Lookingglass Theatre Company, The Neo-Futurists, The Goodman Theatre, and The Gift Theatre, where she is the casting director and an associate artistic director. She is represented by Stewart Talent.&nbsp;Sydney Lynne Thomas, 3Arts/HMS Fund Awardee<figure class="image image-style-side"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418818/endqvtno72qrcqhsgo0y.jpg" alt="image018.jpg"></figure>Sydney Lynne Thomas is a Chicago-based designer from Dallas, Texas who has been a practicing artist for 10 years. Her breadth of work includes scenic design, workshops, painting, sculpture, installation, photography, community organizing, and building. Beginning with a background in visual arts, Thomas explored a variety of visual and mixed media arts before transitioning into the field of scenic design. She has designed or collaborated on more than 50 theatrical projects. An ongoing focus of her work is to continue artistic explorations through curating/creating safe, accessible, engaging physical spaces with a mind towards community and collaboration. She also continues to better investigate and understand interconnectivity through the frameworks of sustainability and technology, especially in relationship to developing and facilitating youth platforms. She was nominated in 2020 for a Non-Equity Jeff Award in Scenic Design. She is a graduate of Northwestern University, studying theatrical design/production.&nbsp;&nbsp;Visual ArtsA.J. McClenon studied art and creative writing at the University of Maryland and The New School prior to receiving a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2014. Alongside artistic experiences, McClenon is passionate about teaching and community collaborations with the goal that all the memories and histories that are said to have “too many Black people” are told and retold again. To uphold these stories, McClenon creates performances, installations, objects, sounds, visuals, and writings. These creations often revolve around an interest in water and aquatic life, escapism, Blackness, science, grief, US history, and the global future. McClenon is deeply invested in leveling the hierarchies of truth and using personal narrative to speak on political and cultural amnesia and their absurdities.&nbsp;Reveca Torres, 3Arts/Chandler Family Awardee<figure class="image image-style-side"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418819/mh9zpzpxrmuwfukevskk.jpg" alt="image022.jpg"></figure>Reveca Torres was paralyzed in a car accident as a teenager. After completing degrees in Fashion Design and Theater Arts, she worked simultaneously as a costume designer and with various organizations doing disability work in health, advocacy, recreation, and peer support. She started a nonprofit called BACKBONES after realizing that years of interaction and friendship with others living with spinal injuries (SCI) made a significant impact in her own life. She is co-director of ReelAbilities Film Festival Chicago and has curated touring photography and art exhibitions that showcase work of people with disabilities and bring awareness to disability rights.
