A couple of years ago the Club rejected a sale for just over $7 million.&nbsp;The painting's name, value and importance to Chicago comes up every few years in will-they-wont-they sale discussions. The pandemic was financially devastating to many of the city's private clubs, in particular the Union League, which is located in the hard-hit Loop and has extensive hotel and dining facilities.&nbsp;Claude Monet’s Pommiers en Fleurs (Apple Trees in Blossom) measures 23" x 29" and is a classic springtime image by the artist. A Chicagoan, Judge John Barton Payne, who was a member of the Union League Club, purchased the painting from a show of the artist's work at the Art Institute in 1895 just when the artist's star was skyrocketing. According to the description of the Art Institute's Monet in Chicago, "When Monet’s paintings first appeared alongside his contemporaries’ in a Chicago gallery in 1888, he was singled out for praise by the press. And when his works were shown in the city again as part of the last Inter-State Industrial Exposition in Chicago (also known as the “American Salon”) in 1890, they not only captured the eye of local collectors—they ignited a collective passion." A Chicago Daily Tribune review in 1888 exclaimed “Why go to Paris since Paris has come to Chicago?”Payne sold Pommiers en Fleurs to the Union League for $500. A 2020 Art Monitor <a href="https://www.artmarketmonitor.com/2020/12/07/chicagos-union-league-club-board-approves-sale-of-prized-monet-other-works/">article</a> said that at the time of its exhibition in 1895 its value was $1,500. By the late 1950s, it was valued at $20,000, and in 1985, it was said to be worth $900,000.&nbsp;The work has been part of museum exhibitions over the years, recently Monet in Chicago at the Art Institute in 2020, but it has always maintained its status as the jewel of the Club's valuable private collection, which is frequently opened to the non-member public. &nbsp;The club's <a href="https://ulcc.org/art-collection">website description</a> of its collecting history states, "The Club supported the establishment of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum and the Harold Washington Library. It also built one of the most comprehensive private collections of American art. This outstanding, museum-quality collection is one of the first things one notices about the Union League Club: art is everywhere! Some work is familiar – Monet’s Apple Trees in Blossom – while others may be less familiar – Sabraw’s&nbsp;Chroma S4 Chimaera, David Anthony Geary’s Back of the Bus for Now, and Roger Brown’s Cathedrals in Space, for example.It offers ticketed tours of its art collection. The gallery just announced the addition of a new artist to its program and is featuring a selection of works by Polish-American artist Theresa Bernstein (1890-2002).Often associated with the New York Ashcan School, Bernstein documented the urban landscape around her, creating vibrant works of social realism which continue to captivate.&nbsp;Theresa Ferber Bernstein-Meyerowitz was born on March 1, 1890, in Kraków, Poland, and raised in Philadelphia. Following training at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and the New York Art Student’s League, where she studied under William Merritt Chase, Bernstein quickly found success as a painter in New York City. By 1914, she was showing regularly alongside renown painters of the Ashcan School John Sloan, Stuart Davis, and Robert Henri. At a time when modernist abstraction was coming to the fore, Bernstein remained devoted to figurative subjects. Calls for Artists to Start the New Year

<html><head></head><body><figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417538/nhv45lltv3utqrp2q7kn.jpg"><figcaption>Portrait of Richard Hunt by Sandro Miller. &nbsp;</figcaption></figure>By CGN StaffOn Saturday sculptor Richard Hunt's studio announced that the artist had died at home at age 88.CGN was fortunate to interview Hunt in early 2023 for <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2023/4/hard-at-work-at-87-richard-hunt">our spring issue</a>. Hunt was known for being as kind as he was prolific, and his career spanned more than 70 years, making an impact on public art, the field of sculpture and Chicago's global art reputation. Hunt was born and raised in Chicago, and he made a special point over many years to share how much living and working in Chicago meant to him.&nbsp;This spring Hunt shared with CGN that he was greatly influenced by his mother, an artist and librarian, and he spent much of his childhood enjoying museums and opera performances, fostering his passion for the arts. “I grew up with my parents on the Southside, near Woodlawn and Englewood.” He was soon captivated by sculpture, even building his own bedroom art studio where he could sculpt with clay long before he discovered wax and soldered wires, and eventually sheet metal and found objects like automative scrap. In his final years working as an artist he was commissioned to create "Bird Book," a special work for the Obama Center, under construction on Chicago's South Side and expected to open in 2025.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417539/avi7tgmthxzvpyzxw8we.jpg"><figcaption>Richard in his Chicago studio, &nbsp;March, 2012, preparing for his career overview exhibition: Mutable Currency, Past and Present, presented that summer. Photo via Tom McCormick.</figcaption></figure>&nbsp;Hunt pursued his Art Education degree at the Art Institute, and it was there as a student that he began his groundbreaking career. While he undoubtedly found his love for art in Chicago and received his formal education there, the decision to remain in his hometown, despite the pull of the art world nucleus forming in New York in the 1960s, did not come without sacrifices. Hunt said he really thought about what he would have found in New York versus Chicago, but that ultimately he decided not to move there. Chicago would always be home to Richard Hunt, but the world would be home to his art. People everywhere may still &nbsp;appreciate his soaring sculptures and understand his creative message of freedom for decades to come.Art dealer Tom McCormick, a friend of Hunt's for 50 years, shared, "Once, when interviewing Richard, I broached the question of his fame and legacy. I asked if he thought staying in Chicago, the city of his birth, might have somehow been a handicap to gaining a wider, international notoriety. He thought a moment and said he was grateful for all the good fortune that had come his way... the blessing of getting to do his work as he saw fit and it likely couldn't have happened any better, anywhere else.
