Chicago’s Fine Arts Building to host 125th Anniversary Celebration

Once described as "a dancefloor mainstay of Chicago," Pickleman is recognized for his artistic vision, playful demeanor, and remarkable generosity, and this auction is a rare opportunity for art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in his creative world.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://mcusercontent.com/50e5c1be866e9aaa28cfec1db/images/6277f59b-71e5-ab6f-61fc-40b3e5390a0b.jpg" alt=""></figure>&nbsp;Amassing art since he was a teenager, Pickleman attended Boston University where he studied English literature—and met Leslie Bodenstein, who would become his partner in life and at JNL Graphic Design. The pair founded the studio in 1992, working from a decommissioned post office in Chicago's River North area and merging their art and design sensibilities with tremendous success. "To live in Chicago is to encounter Jason Pickleman’s work," according to the Chicago Tribune, and local clients have included Millennium Park, Avec, Blackbird, Time Out Chicago, Chicago Transit Authority, Poetry Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, EXPO Chicago, and the Field Museum. Beyond the Windy City limits, JNL has worked with clients including the Prada Foundation and Skinny Pop Popcorn, for whom they designed Warhol-inspired packaging.&nbsp;The space between commercial and contemporary art has been of the utmost importance to Pickleman, who has defined himself by his ability to move effortlessly through these worlds as both an artist and collector. Pickleman was among the creators featured in the 2007 exhibition Young Chicago at the Art Institute of Chicago, and his art now resides in the institution's permanent collection. His works have been shown at the Chicago Cultural Center, the Chicago Design Museum, Ken Saunders Gallery, and the Neon and Light Museum, among others. In 2021, he created a monumental sculpture for Sculpture Milwaukee and this celebrated work, <a href="https://wright20.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=50e5c1be866e9aaa28cfec1db&amp;id=5700255f77&amp;e=7eb8b4f0ec">Hand Heart</a> (est. $30,000-50,000), leads EVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT.&nbsp;As testament to his unorthodox and open-hearted ethos as a collector, Pickleman opened his collection gallery Lawrence &amp; Clark in 2015, named for the Chicago intersection where it stood. Here, Pickleman curated and installed works from his own collection, throwing open the doors to the public to be seen again (and again) by anybody who wanted to drop in. "Much of the work in EVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT would have been on exhibit at Lawrence &amp; Clark," Pickleman says. "When a collector buys a work of art, it usually gets sequestered away, and publicly seen again only very rarely. The gallery was a way of giving my collection a second public life."&nbsp;Pickleman has long been an ardent supporter of rising talent in his chosen city, tirelessly making his own circuit between galleries, thesis exhibitions, and less formalized art spaces. Of his personal taste, Pickleman noted, "I’m most interested in ambiguity and pieces that seem strange or awkward; living with them fuels my creativity." The 2023 fall programming will feature a new commission by the acclaimed Dr. Yiyun Kang, esteemed in the field of projection mapping and immersive art, and the return of the popular projection by the renowned Charles Atlas. Dr. Kang and Atlas’s projections will be on view nightly at 7:30pm CT from September 14 to November 15, 2023. &nbsp;“I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Kang to Chicago and ART on THE MART. As such a groundbreaking artist in the realm of projection mapping and immersive art, it’s exciting to see her vision be realized on THE MART,” said Cynthia Noble, Executive Director of ART on THE MART. “In celebration of our 5thanniversary, it’s also hugely exciting to welcome back Charles Atlas, whose career is deservedly booming right now. We look forward to having him in Chicago again.”&nbsp;Responding to humanity’s environmental crisis and the unfathomable power and intelligence of AI technologies, Dr. Kang’s site-specific commission Only in the Dark will unfold over three immersive scenes that mix digital animations with AI-generated imageries to explore how we can think collectively about a more inclusive future. The work begins with a scene depicting the shifting structure of THE MART, alluding to a new beginning. The second scene uses biophilic designs to illustrate the coexistence of nature and humans. Ending with a hopeful future, the final vignette depicts a human dancing in water surrounded by a beautiful halo created from the light bouncing off the water’s surface.&nbsp;‘Only in the Dark’ is presented in partnership with Superblue, where Dr. Kang is the latest addition to the gallery’s artist roster. &nbsp;&nbsp;In creating ‘Only in the Dark,’ Dr. Kang was inspired by THE MART and its history and position as a leader in sustainable practices. Owned and operated by Vornado Realty Trust, THE MART is an architectural icon and an internationally recognized leader in culture, design and technology. Known colloquially as a “city within a city,” THE MART opened as the largest building in the world in 1930 and has continuously evolved to incorporate the latest in environmental practices. In 1996, THE MART became one of the first major properties in downtown Chicago to adopt the district cooling system to reduce the discharge of CFCs. Courtesy of ART on THE MART</figcaption></figure>“To escape our current darkness, this work suggests using non-binary thinking,” Dr. Kang said. “Building upon THE MART’s history of contributing to environmental solutions, I hope ‘Only in the Dark’ will help us to consider new ways of thinking to address some of the most pressing issues facing us today.” &nbsp;Reflecting on its five years of empowering artists to create innovative new work, ART on THE MART’s fall 2023 season will revisit Charles Atlas’s celebrated projection, The Geometry of Thought, which first debuted in fall 2019. The site-specific work features a&nbsp;characteristic combination of abstract shapes and numerals unfolding over eight chapters. The chapters will begin with a splash of color starting at the base of THE MART’s façade and rising to the top of the turrets, animating and exploring the iconic structure and architecture. Atlas has been a pioneering figure in film and video for over four decades. He has extended the limits of his medium, forging new territory in a far-reaching range of genres, stylistic approaches and techniques. In December 2023, the Art Institute of Chicago will also have&nbsp;The Years&nbsp;(2018),&nbsp;a recently acquired work by Atlas, on view in their&nbsp;galleries. ART on THE MART will then bring the projection back for a 1-3 day pop up timed to the opening. &nbsp;“I am thrilled to return to the beloved city of Chicago with ‘The Geometry of Thought’ animating THE MART’s façade,” said Atlas. “It is a truly unique platform for an artist to create work for and it’s been exciting to watch the program develop over the last five years.”&nbsp;ART on THE MART can best be experienced from the jetty section of the Chicago Riverwalk on Wacker Drive between Wells Street and Franklin Street, where accompanying audio can also be heard. Funding from the Mellon Foundation will allow for the implementation of new Chicago monuments, including the Chicago Torture Justice Memorial. These projects will add—permanently and temporarily—to the City of Chicago’s collection and memorialize events, people, and groups that historically have been excluded or underrepresented. Additional funding from Mellon will also support ongoing programs that facilitate the continued engagement of artists and communities around monuments, public art, and cultural history.Launched in 2020, the Mellon Monuments Project is a five-year, $250 million commitment to reimagine and rebuild commemorative spaces and transform the way history is told in the United States. As part of the Chicago Monuments Project Williams &nbsp;will be creating the George Washington Monument Intervention, a new public art project.</figcaption></figure>&nbsp;The Chicago Monuments Project (CMP) was created as a response to the City of Chicago’s need for a larger reckoning with monuments that symbolize outdated values and do not tell the story—or the full story—of Chicago’s history. A collaboration between DCASE, Chicago Public Schools (CPS), and the Chicago Park District (CPD), CMP’s work began in 2020 and was guided by an advisory committee of community leaders, artists, architects, scholars, curators, and City officials.The Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee released its final report in August 2022, synthesized from a comprehensive, community-focused engagement process—the first of its kind in a major U.S. city. Thousands of Chicagoans from diverse communities contributed to the conversation on the city’s public monuments through several modes including surveys, live discussions, and free-response public feedback submitted via <a href="http://chicagomonuments.org/">ChicagoMonuments.org</a>.While significant attention was paid to issues pertaining to the existing collection, CMP agreed that its most important work was in the development of new works that will tell an inclusive story going forward. As part of its engagement process, CMP released a call, “Reimagining Monuments: Request for Ideas,” to solicit proposals from individual artists and community groups that rethink the place, purpose, and permanence of monuments in our public spaces. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. Tyler is survived by his two children and his wife Sara, who will now be guiding the gallery through this transition.The legacy of Mongerson Gallery dates back to its foundation in 1971 by Tyler's parents, Mel Mongerson and Susan Wunderlich. Following in his family's footsteps, Tyler joined the gallery in the 1990s and eventually assumed operations in 1999. He established himself as a knowledgeable authority on period Western artwork and bronzes, and had a particular passion for the artists known as the Taos Founders. He was sought after for his expertise by esteemed institutions such as the Thomas Gilcrease Museum, The National Cowboy Hall of Fame, and The Rockwell Museum. Furthermore, Tyler served on the International Advisory Board of the Frederic Remington Museum. Under Tyler's leadership, the gallery flourished and underwent significant transformations. It relocated to a new space in Chicago's vibrant West Town and has expanded its focus to include the works of Surrealists like Gertrude Abercrombie and Julia Thecla. It also showcases the art of important Black artists from Detroit, including Charles McGee and Harold Neal. As Mongerson Gallery navigates this challenging time, we extend our gratitude to our valued clients for their understanding, flexibility, and patience. We are fortunate to have Sara Mongerson, who brings over 30 years of experience in the finance sector, collaborating closely with Gallery Director Jack Spector-Bishop to ensure the continuity of our operations. Art Dealer Tyler Mongerson Has Died

The gallery's final exhibition opens in June and they will have a celebration of art and social justice in September. In an email announcement the gallery team said, "Your interest, paired with the hard work and creativity of the Weinberg/Newton Gallery team and the artists that have exhibited here, allowed us to engage in a wide range of social justice issues through art. Inspired by nonprofit partners, our exhibitions and programs were highly collaborative efforts that focused on establishing and expanding common ground."David Weinberg opened his eponymous gallery, David Weinberg Photography, in the heart of River North in 2006 following a successful career running a family business. He showed his own fine art photographs at the gallery alongside the work of other artists. In 2014 he decided to shift direction and focus on art and social justice, using partnerships with local and national nonprofits and grassroots organizations to mount exhibitions that also featured education, engagement and activism. Murphy Auditorium at 50 E. Erie, an important part of the Museum's&nbsp;campus. Upon completion in February 2024, this new project will renew 32,000 square feet of former office space to create a dynamic new Learning Center with art and maker studios, a study center with classrooms, a library and archive, redesigned office spaces, seminar rooms, and an 800-square foot outdoor terrace on the top floor. &nbsp; The magnificent design of the main auditorium space on the ground floor is being restored to its original grandeur and enhanced with cutting-edge acoustics that will make it a world-class venue. The opening of the updated building will present a full suite of new programming tied to the Driehaus Museum’s strategic vision, along with a range of activities and events, both public and private, for the community. This renovation is in line with the Museum’s strategic plan to be a&nbsp; more active and visible part of our community. &nbsp; According to Interim Driehaus Executive Director Lisa Key, “It is thrilling for us to embark upon this important renovation which will create a new Museum campus, offering visitors not only an incredible museum of art, architecture, and design, but now a newly rejuvenated auditorium that will add a vital and dynamic public space to the cultural campus in Chicago that will continue to increase the historical profile of this great city of architecture.” &nbsp; The Museum will remain open during the construction, and the Murphy’s historic exterior will remain intact with the renovation work enhancing the grandeur of its soaring interior. On the main floor, the seating area will be unified by levelling the floor, and new lighting and acoustics will improve the visitors’ experience. The Museum elevator will be closed for several months at the start of the project and the Museum will be making alternative arrangements for visitors who require access during this time. “It was a huge relief to learn about the Driehaus Museum expanding its campus into the adjacent Murphy Memorial. There are not many options for finding an appropriate re-use that would respect the historic character of such a monumentally scaled historic building while at same time providing a positive impact on the surrounding neighborhood,” said Tim Samuelson, the Cultural Historian Emeritus of the City of Chicago. “The Driehaus Museum has been a thoughtful community partner and valuable neighborhood asset for the past twenty years, and its expansion into the Murphy will make something great even greater!” Ongoing through spring 2024, the construction will include a 14-foot-high sidewalk canopy on Erie Street, running&nbsp; from the alley to part of the Nickerson Mansion. Selected from approximately 500 submissions, the funded projects include publications, research, exhibitions, films, podcasts, digital initiatives, public programs and other formats that further ideas, discussions, and new understandings of architecture. The funded projects are led by 92 individuals that include established and emerging architects, artists, curators, designers, filmmakers, historians, and writers, based in cities such as Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Ahmedabad, India; Bandung, Indonesia; Beirut, Lebanon; Buenos Aires, Argentina; New York, NY; Paris, France; Oklahoma City, OK; Porto, Portugal; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Rotterdam, the Netherlands; and Chicago, IL where the Graham Foundation is based. Artist Choice is designed to center artists in the grantmaking process, aligned with Ruth Arts’ mission and reflecting their belief in the integral role artists play in their communities. It is rooted deeply in traditions of abstraction, the manipulation of language, and his beginnings as a part of the Post-Conceptualist movement in Chicago in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Pickleman’s paintings are always subtly wry, slightly sexy, and quietly human.His latest body of work, on view in Making Time for Joy, are a suite of new paintings derived from manipulations of various iterations of the logo belonging to the once-ubiquitous dishwashing detergent brand Joy. These works, which are at once stark and measured, playful and (as advertised) joyful, are Pickleman at his best. With an authoritative eye, he excavates the intersection of art and graphic design, and in doing so uncovers questions of purpose, domesticity, and the most interior aspects of personhood. These paintings ask their viewers to take stock. Encourage them to start again. Impel them to make time for joy.&nbsp;<a href="https://observer.com/2023/05/art-institute-of-chicago-charles-hack/">Art Institute of Chicago Purchases Nearly 1,500 Works From Art Collector Charles Hack</a>The Art Institute of Chicago announced last week its acquisition of 1,440 works from prominent art collector Charles Hack.The artwork, which comes from the collection of Hack and the Hearn Family Foundation, managed by Hack, primarily focuses on Dutch Mannerists from the 1530s to 1750.An artist featured heavily in the collection is Hendrick Goltzius, a 16th-century Dutch artist “and one of the greatest draftsmen and printmakers of his age,” according to the museum.
