After 15 years on North Peoria in the West Loop, and over 40 years in the art business,&nbsp;Rhona Hoffman Gallery has relocated to 1711 W. Chicago Ave. in West Town, joining a growing group of galleries who have moved for more affordable rent and to be part of an emerging gallery community. Hoffman&#39;s inaugural exhibition in the new space,&nbsp;Judy Ledgerwood: Far From The Tree, opens Friday, April 6 and runs through May 19. This is the artist&#39;s fifth solo show with the gallery.&nbsp;

Three years ago, Hoffman signed her last lease in the West Loop. Since then, the surrounding neighborhood, and its price per square foot,&nbsp;changed rapidly, spurring the consideration of a major move instead of closing the doors.&nbsp;

Hoffman told CGN on Thursday, &quot;The exhibition of Judy Ledgerwood&#39;s unbelievably beautiful, color-filled paintings make us even more excited to show the public our new gallery space designed by John Vinci.&quot;

Ledgerwood is known for using bright colors in her paintings and experimenting with various textures and patterns. According to the gallery&#39;s show description, &quot;The visual pleasure, luminosity, and optical stimulation primary in Judy Ledgerwood&rsquo;s new paintings are hinged upon their embedded conceptual complexity. For over thirty years the Chicago-based painter has been dismantling the canon of Abstract Painting from within by using disruptive color combinations, deconstructing the minimal / conceptual grid, and employing decidedly feminine forms.

Maximalist color and provocative shapes are primary agents in Judy Ledgerwood&rsquo;s engagement with historical painting.&nbsp;Whether interrupting rich blues with unexpected green, orange, and yellows in&nbsp;Tiny Dancer&nbsp;or combining glowing orange with translucent mustard browns in&nbsp;Sheela,&nbsp;Judy Ledgerwood always provokes viewers to extend beyond complacent enjoyment and actively engage with looking.&nbsp;In&nbsp;Hopscotch Chelsea Rose&nbsp;and&nbsp;Drunkard&rsquo;s Path,&nbsp;quilting patterns serve&nbsp;as the instrument to organize Ledgerwood&rsquo;s characteristic chevron and quatrefoil matrix.&nbsp;

In&nbsp;Far From The Tree,&nbsp;Judy Ledgerwood&rsquo;s signature shapes are augmented with circles, diamonds, chevrons, and seed-like forms associated with Paleolithic and Neolithic goddesses. The artist refers to these shapes as &ldquo;ciphers of feminine power&rdquo; - rooted in the generative, flexible Yonic form. Manipulating the grid, shape, and color of large-scale contemporary painting, Ledgerwood shatters the canon from within to create a distinct, feminist painting voice.

Last month the John Toomey Gallery announced a generational succession as well as a name change.&nbsp;According to the press release, after&nbsp;three decades John Toomey Gallery&nbsp;has been a leading specialty auction house and private seller, and it is now known as <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/art-services/toomey-co-auctioneers">Toomey &amp; Co. Auctioneers</a>, marking a new era for a company that, since 1987, has built a reputation of integrity and of being well equipped to compete with large, global auction houses. &nbsp;&nbsp;

John Toomey will assume the role of a hands-on consultant for Toomey &amp; Co. Auctioneers, while turning over the company&rsquo;s management to Lucy Toomey, formerly Senior Vice President, who will now serve as CEO.&nbsp;

&ldquo;Times change and the industry progresses, and it&rsquo;s important that we evolve and adapt to meet the demands of our business as it is today,&rdquo; said John Toomey. &ldquo;The past 30 years have been fantastic, and it&rsquo;s time for the next generation to expand their role. The second edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial just wrapped up a few weeks ago, but plans are already very much underway for the next edition, opening in fall 2019. Today the Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) and Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the appointment of&nbsp;Yesomi Umolu,&nbsp;Exhibitions Curator at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago,&nbsp;as the 2019 Artistic Director.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ms. Umolu brings years of experience and expertise in contemporary art with a particular curatorial focus on "spatial practices" to her initial training in the field of architecture. Together these experiences and insights bring a unique vision to the third Biennial.&nbsp;With a background in architectural design and curatorial studies, Umolu focuses her work on global contemporary art and spatial practices. Her recent projectshave explored the politics of the built environment. Umolu currently holds the position of Exhibitions Curator at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago, and is a visiting lecturer, critic, and speaker at a number of international universities and institutions.“I am honored to be invited to serve as Artistic Director of the 2019 Chicago Architecture Biennial,” said Umolu. “Having my roots in the field of architecture, spatial questions have always been an important consideration of my work with contemporary artists, architects, and urbanists from across the world. Yesomi Umolu named 2019 Artistic Director of Chicago Architecture Biennial

Curator Yesomi Umolu Named Artistic Director of 3rd Chicago Architecture Biennial 

On a sun-filled late winter Sunday,&nbsp;Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and theMART (the building&nbsp;formerly known as The Merchandise Mart)&nbsp;to propose something that will put public art in an entirely new light.

The Mayor announced&nbsp;Art on theMart, a permanent large-scale lighting installation that will come to Chicago for the foreseeable future, starting this fall. The art will project across nearly three acres of the southern facing fa&ccedil;ade of theMART. The building, which includes more than four million square feet behind that facade, was once the biggest in the world.

&ldquo;Large, temporary projections have been done around the world, but the permanency and size of Art on theMART will provide a canvas for art to evolve and thrive,&rdquo; said Myron Maurer, Chief Operating Officer, theMART.&nbsp;Similar displays have been projected on&nbsp;the Sydney Opera House and at St. Peter&rsquo;s Basilica.

Following the popularity of Chicago&#39;s Riverwalk, as well as 2017&#39;s Year of Public Art, the Mayor said,&nbsp;&ldquo;Iconic art and cultural programming on the Riverwalk has always been&nbsp;inherent and integral in helping us embrace the river as the city&rsquo;s newest recreational frontier,&rdquo; said Mayor Emanuel. &ldquo;Art on theMart&nbsp;will be a visionary project that brings new energy to the Riverwalk, while strengthening Chicago&rsquo;s legacy of public art.&rdquo; One can imagine it will also make the river a vibrant destination beyond the summer months.&nbsp;The City and theMART will enter into a 30-year agreement to facilitate the project pending City Council approval.&nbsp; 
 
The installation project, privately funded by Vornado Realty Trust, is slated for a fall 2018 completion. The funding means that the projections will not be branded or feature sponsorships; they will totally feature art.

In 2017, theMART, engaged creative studio Obscura Digital and the Chicago based architectural firm Valerio Dewalt Train, to develop a feasibility study for projecting art on the south, river-facing facade of theMART. Obscura Digital&nbsp;is the foremost design engineer of large projection installations with the technical and design skills capable of developing architectural images at this scale. 
&nbsp; 
Said Myron Maurer, Chief Operating Officer of theMART,&nbsp;&ldquo;As one of Chicago&rsquo;s most prominent buildings, theMART has been part of the city&rsquo;s history since the 1930s.&nbsp;Art on theMART&nbsp;will further cement Chicago&rsquo;s reputation as a dedicated champion for iconic public art.&rdquo;

As the public face of the Mart changes, from a center of commerce and design trade to one much more closely linked with a digital and technology future. 
&nbsp; 
Art on theMART&nbsp;marks the first time a projection of its size and scope will be completely dedicated to art projection with no branding, sponsorship credits, or messaging allowed.&nbsp;It will be a curated, ongoing series of ever-changing installations that will begin after dusk for pedestrians and residents to enjoy. The City and theMART will be working in partnership in the management and ongoing curation of the projected art work.

&ldquo;We&rsquo;re eager to welcome&nbsp;Art on theMART&nbsp;into the pantheon of iconic public artworks in Chicago,&rdquo; said Mark Kelly, Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. &ldquo;This installation is a result of Chicago&rsquo;s first Public Art Plan and has the potential to be as impactful as Cloud Gate and the Picasso, two public art works which have transformed how we see and experience our city.&rdquo;

In 2017, the City of Chicago celebrated the &quot;Year of Public Art&quot; which culminated with hundreds of new works of public art throughout the city and the creation of Chicago&rsquo;s first Public Art Plan. The new plan is a blueprint that will help shape the future of public art in Chicago and shift how we interact, talk about and support works of art that can be viewed by all. As part of the plan, the City of Chicago explored options for siting more public art throughout the city and&nbsp;Art on theMART&nbsp;is a result of those efforts.&nbsp;Art on theMART&nbsp;exemplifies the city&rsquo;s commitment to infusing arts and culture throughout its neighborhoods for all residents and visitors to enjoy, and is a key driver of the rising tourism numbers and last year&rsquo;s record-setting 55.2 million visitors from across the globe.&nbsp;

Art on theMART&nbsp;will be dedicated to public digital art, providing Chicago residents and visitors with an enhanced public art experience. theMART and the City of Chicago, through its Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, will establish a selective process for identifying local, national and international artists and their work to be included in immersive gallery shows, which will include both static and moving imagery. Additionally, partnerships with city museums and art institutions will showcase the best of Chicago and celebrate the incredible artistic culture of the city.

The&nbsp;Chicago Riverwalk&nbsp;is presented by the City of Chicago with programming produced by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Fleet and Facility Management, Choose Chicago, the Chicago Park District and the vendors and boat tour operators along the Riverwalk.

theMART is interwoven into the fabric of Chicago as an innovator in culture, art, business, fashion, media and more. theMART is the world&rsquo;s largest commercial building, wholesale design center and one of Chicago&rsquo;s premier international business locations. Encompassing 4.2 million gross square feet, theMART spans two city blocks and rises 25 stories, and is visited by an average of 30,000 people each business day; in total, nearly 10 million people visit theMART each year.&nbsp;

Public Art in Chicago is About to Get Really Big

This past week, the&nbsp;Winter Olympic began in PyeongChang, South Korea. During the opening ceremony&nbsp;art&nbsp;by a Korean artist, who is represented by&nbsp;a local Chicago gallery, was on view for the world.&nbsp;

Chicago dealer&nbsp;Andrew Bae announced that Andrew Bae Gallery&nbsp;artist&nbsp;Dr. Keysook Geum had the honor of designing the dresses and uniforms for the Pyeongchang Olympics opening ceremony. Geum&#39;s works are well-known to gallery patrons and passersby in River North, as her delicate, actually wearable&nbsp;creations are frequently hung in the gallery&#39;s street-side windows at the corner of Franklin and Superior Streets.&nbsp;

Bae&nbsp;shared that he is&nbsp;truly excited for the artist and that, &quot;Indeed, my favorite part of being a gallery owner is showcasing and discussing art with visitors and patrons.&quot; Seeing these works in person is a delight - during past openings the works have been modeled and worn around the gallery. Seeing them worn on an international stage was something else.

Bae came to America from Korea&nbsp;at the age&nbsp;23, and the&nbsp;gallery&#39;s program features a&nbsp;group of select artists from Korea and Japan. ABG has been representing Keysook Geum for 17 years. The artist&nbsp;was invited to give a lecture to the students of the School of the Art Institute&#39;s&nbsp;Fashion Department in 2015. Her next&nbsp;solo show at the gallery is scheduled for&nbsp;November 2018.&nbsp;

Yesterday the Chicago Artists Coalition formally announced that they are moving the CAC to&nbsp;a new location at 2130-40 West Fulton Street in the dynamic Kinzie Industrial Corridor in spring 2018. CAC will be neighbors with Gray Warehouse, which moved to 2044 W Carroll in April 2017. They will also be near Spudnik Press and Linc Thelen Gallery, as well as&nbsp;Filter Photo and other tenants at&nbsp;Hubbard Street Lofts, 1821 W Hubbard.&nbsp;The new location will occupy 6,286 sq. ft. of a 55,000 sq. ft. building, providing CAC with the option to grow its footprint over time.&nbsp; The <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2014/6/chicago-artists-coalition-takes-a-bite-out-of-40">44-year-old</a>, non-profit organization has been at its current West Loop/Fulton Market&nbsp;location at 217 North Carpenter for the past seven years.“We have truly appreciated the community support that we received at our current building in the Fulton Market District,” said CAC Executive Director, Caroline Older.&nbsp; “As we continue to grow, the new location just west of the District will provide benefits that will allow us to serve an even wider community and to be more easily accessed by those we serve.” CAC’s new space will be customized to create a unique arts center for both the artists that CAC serves and the public. Improvements include a single-floor layout that will be ADA accessible, a dedicated education space, and enhanced artist studios and galleries. The location also provides easy access from downtown and the highways, and is close to the new Damen Avenue CTA “L” stop slated to open in 2020. Partners on the&nbsp;project include Larry Serota of commercial real estate firm,&nbsp;Transwestern, architect&nbsp;Ware Malcomb, general contractor&nbsp;Braun Renovation Management, and building owner&nbsp;EverWest Real Estate Partners, LLC. The buildout of the space will begin in March 2018, with CAC moving in June 2018. Though Edelman hosted the party, it was her many friends, collectors, artists, past staff members and art world colleagues&nbsp;who came, from near and far,&nbsp;to toast Edelman and the significant&nbsp;role the gallery has played in Chicago and beyond in raising the profile of photography in the art world. Photographer Terry Evans applauded Edelman for having earned the reputation as fair and honest in all areas of her business, particularly when it comes to paying her artists immediately upon any sale through the gallery.&nbsp;Edelman opened the gallery at the end of&nbsp;1987 more or less by accident – first she was a metalsmith major, and then she wanted to be a museum curator once she switched her major to photography –&nbsp;and was soon noted as a top Midwestern gallery devoted to exclusively showing photography.&nbsp;Today the gallery continues its founding mission of exhibiting art by both emerging and veteran&nbsp;artists. Edelman's first show in 1987 was&nbsp;the&nbsp;Ballad of Sexual Dependency&nbsp;by Nan Goldin. The gallery's website notes that 'CEG has shown everything from street photography (Susan Meiselas, Sebastiao Salgado, James Nachtwey) to fashion photography (Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritts, Matthew Rolston) to traditional landscape images (Michael Kenna, Lynn Geesaman) to social-conscious work (Richard Misrach, Jeffrey Wolin, Terry Evans, Allen Ginsberg) to images created as a springboard for story-telling (Joel-Peter Witkin, Elizabeth Ernst, Dan Estabrook) etc. Recent shows at the gallery include the major exhibition, Sandro Miller: Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich - Homage to photographic masters. The exhibit debuted in Chicago in 2014 and traveled to Los Angeles, Poland, Australia, Germany, Wyoming, France, and Amsterdam.'Edelman said on Thurdsay night that she doesn't really&nbsp;like getting up in front of a crowd, but she took the occasion to&nbsp;give&nbsp;heartfelt credit to the many people who have supported her over the years,&nbsp;emphasizing&nbsp;the very personal, even familial,&nbsp;nature of the art business. As the first ever Year of Public Art wraps up in the coming weeks,&nbsp;Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) announced that they have designated 2018 as the &ldquo;Year of Creative Youth.&rdquo; The official naming means that&nbsp;the City has pledged&nbsp;$2 million to related programming and events and will be behind&nbsp;a Creative Youth Festival that will take place across the Millennium Park Campus on September 22, 2018, offering performance opportunities for teens at city festivals and partner events, as well as cultural grants and convenings for youth arts organizations. The event will showcase teen artists in dance, theatre, music, spoken word, the visual arts and more. Details will be announced next year.

DCASE will collaborate with Chicago Public Schools and Ingenuity, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Library, the Department of Family and Support Services and other city departments to engage Chicago&rsquo;s youth and youth arts organizations. As part of the Year of Creative Youth, the city will work with After School Matters, Chicago Children&rsquo;s Theatre, Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras, Free Spirit Media, Marwen, SkyArt, Urban Gateways, Yollocalli Arts Reach-National Museum of Mexican Art and Young Chicago Authors and other organizations to inspire the next generation of artists.

Seeking to build up Chicago&#39;s reputation as an arts-centric city that attracts visitors from around the world, Mayor Emanuel said,&nbsp;&ldquo;The Year of Creative Youth provides an incredible opportunity to support the creativity and growth of artistic children across Chicago,&quot;

The Year of Creative Youth annoucement follows the Mayor&#39;s the unveiling a few days prior&nbsp;of the City&#39;s first&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/dca/provdrs/public_art_program/news/2017/october/public_art_plan.html">Public Art Plan</a>, through which&nbsp;Mayor Emanuel wishes to establish&nbsp;continued investments for art and cultural affairs in the 2018 budget. Proposed amusement tax changes will close an existing loophole that benefited large live performance venues while cutting taxes for neighborhood theaters. The goal is to free up&nbsp;revenue to support expanded youth programming, as well as capital projects and cultural investments across the city.

&ldquo;Chicago should be very proud of its innovative youth arts organizations&mdash;and the many cultural institutions that are committed to unleashing the creative potential of our teens and young adults,&rdquo; said DCASE Commissioner Mark Kelly. &ldquo;We are pleased to announce IncentOvate grants for six of these amazing institutions.&rdquo;

A $1.8 million investment will support the new Creative Youth Festival, expanding of existing City of Chicago cultural programming that engages youth, performance stipends for teens at City of Chicago festivals and partner events, convenings for arts educators and young artists and a marketing campaign.

An additional $200,000, amounting to nearly half of the Cultural Grants Program-IncentOvate funds awarded by DCASE will be designated to support creative youth. IncentOvate grantees organizing creative youth-focused projects include:

The Year of Creative Youth is part of the Mayor&rsquo;s citywide vision for raising up youth in Chicago, including the extensive One Summer Chicago jobs program, Mayor Emanuel&rsquo;s Mentoring Initiative, Chicago City of Learning, the Chicago Public Schools Arts Education Plan, Night Out In the Parks presented by the Chicago Park District, YOUmedia at select Chicago Public Library locations and more. <html><head></head><body><figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418161/jbd2rzscq3ot9q5f9vqq.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Photographer&nbsp;Dawoud Bey was awarded the presigious MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant this week in recognition of his exploration of the role of portraiture and photography in examining life and history in America.Bey is represented in Chicago by <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/stephen-daiter-gallery">Stephen Daiter Gallery</a> and he is a professor of photography at Columbia College Chicago.&nbsp;Following is the announcement from the MacArthur Foundation:Dawoud Bey&nbsp;is a photographer and educator whose portraits of people, many from marginalized communities, compel viewers to consider the reality of the subjects' own social presence and histories. Through his expansive approach to photography—which includes deep engagement with his subjects and museum-based projects—Bey is making institutional spaces more accessible to the communities in which they are situated.During a residency in 1992 at the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Andover, Bey embarked on what would become an ongoing series of portraits of high school students. He made his artistic practice more public and accessible, involving the students in shaping their own representations and working in a semi-public studio. The resultant large-scale, multiple-image works are powerful expressions of the youthful subjects' respective individualities, still in the throes of being formed and negotiated. Bey expanded on this project in&nbsp;Class Pictures&nbsp;(2002–2006), a body of work produced in collaboration with young people and institutions throughout the United States. In addition to playing a role in the construction of their psychologically rich portraits, the students provided written texts about themselves to accompany Bey's photographs of them, creating another layer of evocative self-definition. The exhibitions, public programming, and educational outreach Bey conceived as components of&nbsp;Class Pictures&nbsp;turned the museum into a vehicle for creating a closer relationship between institutions, youth, and the communities they inhabit.More recently, Bey has focused on the construction of collective history and memory. In&nbsp;The Birmingham Project(2013), he commemorates the lives of six children killed in the 1963 bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and its aftermath in Birmingham, Alabama, through a series of portraits of Birmingham residents whose ages correspond either to the ages of the children in 1963 or to how old they would have been fifty years later in 2013. In another recent project,&nbsp;Harlem Redux&nbsp;(2014–2017), Bey returns to the site of his first project,&nbsp;Harlem, U.S.A. (1975–1979), but in this instance he focuses on the urban landscape and its transformation spurred by gentrification. Through his own work and long-time commitment to educating and mentoring young artists, Bey is redefining the role of photography and portraiture as active agents in the examination and formation of communities.BIOGRAPHYDawoud Bey received a B.F.A. Photographer Dawoud Bey Awarded Prestigious MacArthur Genius Grant

Earlier this summer when I interviewed DCASE Commissioner Mark Kelly, he told me a secret about a major public art announcement that would be revealed in the fall. Well, finally the secret is out: on Thursday Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;Department&nbsp;of&nbsp;Cultural&nbsp;Affairs&nbsp;and&nbsp;Special&nbsp;Events&nbsp;(DCASE) shared that&nbsp;internationally renowned artist and MacArthur Fellow&nbsp;Kerry James Marshall&nbsp;will create an epic, large-scale mural for the&nbsp;Chicago Cultural Center&nbsp;(78 E. Washington St.), honoring 20 women who have shaped the city&rsquo;s vibrant arts and culture landscape. Work on the mural began the same day that the announcement was made, and it is expected to continue throughout next month. The Garland Court facade has previously been blank.&nbsp;

When all is finished the 132-foot by 100-foot mural, which&nbsp;will be located outdoors and&nbsp;installed on the Cultural Center&#39;s&nbsp;west-facing Garland Court fa&ccedil;ade, between Washington and Randolph Streets,&nbsp;will be the largest artwork Kerry James Marshall&nbsp;has ever designed or created. The creation of the mural also&nbsp;coincides with the City&#39;s month-long Public Art Festival&nbsp;during Chicago&rsquo;s&nbsp;Year of Public Art.

&ldquo;Chicago is recognized across the country and around the world as an epicenter of innovative art, architecture and design,&rdquo; said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. &ldquo;Kerry James Marshall&rsquo;s new mural on&nbsp;the&nbsp;iconic&nbsp;Chicago Cultural Center will be a strong addition to Chicago&rsquo;s public art portfolio and a fitting&nbsp;commemoration of Chicago&rsquo;s Year of Public Art.&rdquo;

The Chicago Cultural Center is&nbsp;the first and most comprehensive free large-municipal cultural venue in the county.&nbsp;It is currently home to the&nbsp;Chicago Architecture Biennial, which runs through January 7, 2018.

&ldquo;When I was asked to design a mural for narrow Garland Court, it was immediately clear to me that the site had to be &lsquo;opened up&rsquo; in some way,&rdquo; said Kerry James Marshall. &ldquo;My solution was a park-like view with a bright sun and stand of trees to bring light and green space to the location while at the same time honoring&nbsp;the mission of the building as the hub of artistic activity in Chicago. My idea was to make of the trees a kind of Forest Rushmore acknowledging the contribution of 20 women who&rsquo;ve worked to shape the cultural landscape of the city, past and present.&rdquo;

The mural is funded by&nbsp;Murals of Acceptance, whose goal is to bring art to all people in a free public setting.&nbsp;

Kerry James Marshall&nbsp;is an artist and MacArthur Fellow. A deeply accomplished artist, Marshall&nbsp;uses many types of mediums, including collage, drawings, murals and even comic books. His work is known for referencing African American culture and history, including the Civil Rights era and the Black Power movement.&nbsp;Painting in a Realist style, he depicts dark figures that celebrate black beauty and confront general racial stereotypes within contemporary American society.&nbsp;He has received solo exhibitions throughout Europe and North America and his work has been included in such prestigious international exhibitions as the 1997 Whitney Biennial, the 2003 Venice Biennial, the 2009 Gwangju Biennial, two Documentas (1997 and 2007) and the 1999 Carnegie International.&nbsp;Debuting at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in April 2016, Marshall&rsquo;s retrospective&nbsp;Mastry&nbsp;spanned his 35-year career and included nearly 80 original pieces. On August 28, 2017, the City of Chicago presented Kerry James Marshall with the Fifth Star Honor Award for his many contributions to our city&rsquo;s cultural landscape.

The design and vision&nbsp;created by Marshall will be executed&nbsp;by Chicago mural artist Jeff Zimmermann and his team from Jazim, Inc.

In addition to the work on Kerry James Marshall&rsquo;s mural at the Chicago Cultural Center, the City of Chicago will present a month-long Public Art Festival throughout October featuring&nbsp;a series of neighborhood events highlighting the city&rsquo;s public art collection located throughout the city. Programs will celebrate the completion of several new artworks as part of the 50x50 Neighborhood Arts Project, a citywide initiative that commissioned dozens of local artists to create new sculptures, murals and other public artworks in Chicago&rsquo;s 50 wards,representing a $1.5 million investment in artist-led community projects. In June, the City of Chicago announced&nbsp;the selected local artists and the participating communities. Many of these works are in the early stages of production and will be dedicated during the festival.

The month-long&nbsp;Public Art Festival&nbsp;in October will culminate with a Public Art Symposium on October 26 and 27 at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 East Washington St.). The symposium will convene artists, scholars, community organizers and public agents to explore the intersecting values of their work in public art. The symposium coincides with the release of Chicago&rsquo;s first Public Art Plan, a set of recommendations that will help shape the future of public art in Chicago.

If you attended EXPO CHICAGO or the opening of the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial&nbsp;last&nbsp;week&nbsp;you knew that things were busy. EXPO and the City of Chicago both&nbsp;announced just how busy things were &ndash;&nbsp;8,500 people on opening night for EXPO&#39;s Vernissage, and 40,000 people over the course of the fair &ndash;&nbsp;and the news is positive on all fronts. Early sales wrap-ups from participating galleries have been healthy and encouraging, and the overall attendance numbers set records.&nbsp;

&ldquo;This is the first year that L&eacute;vy Gorvy participated in EXPO CHICAGO and we were thrilled by the reception that we received from collectors, curators and a very enthusiastic public. Chicago has a personal significance for me, and a phenomenal history as a pioneering city for art, architecture and collecting. The opening of EXPO&nbsp;CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art,&nbsp;and the simultaneous launch of the second edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial were also very good for the City of Chicago, since the city&nbsp;welcomed more than 100,000 visitors from around the world last week,&nbsp;a figure&nbsp;reported by Mayor Emanuel himself,&nbsp;&ldquo;Renowned exhibitions at both the Chicago Architecture Biennial and EXPO CHICAGO bolstered Chicago&rsquo;s reputation as the vanguard of architectural, art and design innovation on the national and international stage and underscores the city&rsquo;s important convening power,&rdquo; said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. &ldquo;I want to thank all of the architects, organizers, and residents of Chicago who made this week such a tremendous cultural, educational and economic success for our city.&rdquo;&nbsp;

EXPO&nbsp;presented 135 leading international galleries from 25 countries and 58 cities. Additional special projects in collaboration with both CAB and EXPO CHICAGO took place at Navy Pier with Nick Cave&rsquo;s&nbsp;Here Hear Chicago&nbsp;performances as well as&nbsp;at the DuSable Museum of African American History&rsquo;s Roundhouse for the Palais de Tokyo&rsquo;s first-ever off-site exhibition in the United States, in partnership with the Institut fran&ccedil;ais.&nbsp;

The Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) expanded to include over 140 practitioners from 20 countries at exhibitions at the Chicago Cultural Center hub, as well as at six neighborhood sites across the city. The estimated attendance at CAB was over 30,000 at opening festivities.&nbsp;The&nbsp;Biennial runs through January 7, 2018, and is free and open to the general public at the Chicago Cultural Center and sites across the city. EXPO returns to Navy Pier September 27-30, 2018.

It&#39;s hard to believe EXPO CHICAGO 2017&nbsp;is already over, but the 2018 dates have been set and we will look forward to once again seeing what&#39;s next for the fair as well as the contemporary art world. At 6 pm President | Director of EXPO CHICAGO&nbsp;Tony Karman&nbsp;took a humbling moment to thank the crowd for their tremendous support for the fair&rsquo;s sixth year. He then called on MCA Chicago&rsquo;s Pritzker Director&nbsp;Madeleine Grynsztejn&nbsp;to speak to the incredible partnership between the MCA and EXPO CHICAGO. &nbsp;

&ldquo;We have been collaborating with the art fair since the inception of Vernissage and we are especially proud of that partnership this year because we are celebrating the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of the MCA Women&rsquo;s Board. Thank you to the Women&rsquo;s Board and all of you for making the MCA the preeminent contemporary art museum in Chicago and beyond for 50 years.&rdquo; She added, &ldquo;Collaborations like this are so important, and I am proud to debut another collaboration between the MCA, world-renowned artist Kerry James Marshall and fashion brand MZ Wallace. Together, we debut a gorgeous bag based on a painting by Kerry James Marshall in our permanent collection, and all proceeds go directly to our education programs.&rdquo;

Boone, who welcomed everyone to Navy Pier stating, &ldquo;Tony and his vision for EXPO CHICAGO has really paved the way for establishing Navy Pier as one of the most exciting cultural districts in the city of Chicago,&nbsp;and I am just thrilled and honored to continue this tradition and partnership.&rdquo; She reiterated MacLellan&rsquo;s sentiments by adding, &ldquo;This is a tremendous demonstration of the power of partnerships and collaborations between private, public and non-private sectors pulling together to make this the most exciting arts week not only in Chicago but in the nation.&rdquo;

Chairman of the Chicago Architecture Biennial&nbsp;Jack Guthman&nbsp;also took a moment to thank Tony Karman for his vision. &ldquo;I told the Mayor we had to align the Biennial with EXPO CHICAGO because no one promotes Chicago the way Tony Karman promotes Chicago. I wanted the biennial, my little ship, to follow in his wake, and the Mayor got it right away.&rdquo;

The City of Chicago Commissioner of Cultural Affairs and Special Events&nbsp;Mark Kelly&nbsp;concluded the remarks, perfectly encapsulating the unique collaborations of the night and throughout the city. &ldquo;This year is the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of the MCA and the sixth year of EXPO CHICAGO. 50 is the most perfect number in numerology, and six is the most harmonious of the single digit numbers so what we have is major good karma here today. The performance, a part of&nbsp;Here Hear Chicago&nbsp;and a unique collaboration between Cave and architect&nbsp;Jeanne Gang, continued in the Aon Ballroom welcoming guests of Vernissage in addition to the general public.

Impressive Numbers From Opening of EXPO CHICAGO 2017 and 2nd Chicago Architecture Biennial

We received the following press announcement from the MCA regarding the smashing success of Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg.&nbsp;The exhibition and artwork by Murakami were featured on the <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2017/5/publisher-s-letter-summer-s-fresh-take-on-art">summer 2017 issue</a> of Chicago Gallery News. <h3>NEWS ALERT | Murakami Breaks Attendance Record Today</h3>

The&nbsp;Takashi Murakami&nbsp;exhibition officially broke the David Bowie attendance record of 193,000, making it the&nbsp;all-time highest attended exhibition&nbsp;in the MCA&#39;s 50-year history. Visitors&nbsp;still have five days to see the exhibition, it runs through Sunday, September 24. 
&nbsp; 
Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg&nbsp;features the art and culture icon&#39;s immersive paintings, including several never-before-seen works. Murakami is widely known for both his fine art and commercial output -- including collaborations with pop icons such as Kanye West and fashion house Louis Vuitton -- and his ability to straddle high and low, ancient and modern, eastern and western, commercial and fine art. The exhibition is curated by MCA Chief Curator Michael Darling, who said in regards to setting a new attendance record for the museum, &quot;The audiences for this show have been amazing, incredibly youthful and diverse with an enthusiastic thirst for all that Murakami produces.&quot; 
&nbsp; 
Tickets are still available to see the exhibition, but visitors will need timed tickets on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On Saturday, in addition to regular museum hours, the exhibition will be open from 7 - 11 pm during the museum&#39;s late-night Prime Time event (21+, special ticket required). Hundreds of exhibitions, dozens of art fairs, and thousands of magical, provocative and beautiful objects later we have decided to close the gallery. At the end of this coming July, 2017, we will close the doors of our gallery space&nbsp;and assume a new persona as private dealers. From time to time we will mount exhibitions and publish catalogs - just not in our own gallery. We will not disappear - just change the scope and presentation of our operations.

&nbsp;Over the next three months we will be mounting small, thematic exhibitions of existing inventory in our Michigan Avenue location. These sales will provide an excellent opportunity to acquire high quality and important ethnographic material at exceptionally low prices.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
In July Chicago-based Wright Auctioneers will feature a selective sale of approximately one hundred curated objects acquired by this Gallery over the years. We are very excited about this collaboration with Wright, whose presentation and professionalism set a standard in their field. 
&nbsp; 
The importance of tribal art cannot be overstated. Its complex history with modern Western art is intriguing and complex. Each informs the other. For anyone interested in how the human mind is compelled to make experience tangible then one must consider tribal art. Look at it, wonder about it, live with it, be inspired by it and let it broaden your world.

EXPO CHICAGO Announces Participating Galleries for Sixth Edition

CGN is excited to announce that starting Saturday, June 3, 2017&nbsp;the meeting place for the River North Saturday morning gallery tours&nbsp;will&nbsp;be Fabcakes at 714&nbsp;N. Wells St. We are thrilled to partner with Fabcakes, an independently owned cafe in River North. 
&nbsp; 
Every Saturday morning at 11am a&nbsp;gallery representative meets participants inside Fabcakes at a designated table. Participants can enjoy a cup of coffee and complimentary samples from the bakery. The representative then takes the group on a guided tour of four River North galleries. The gallery roster and tour leader change weekly, and conversation centers on the exhibitions and artists on view. 
&nbsp;

Polish sculptor&nbsp;Magdalena Abakanowicz (born in&nbsp;1930),&nbsp;an artist&nbsp;with a career spanning more than five decades, died yesterday in Warsaw.&nbsp;

In Chicago she is most known for&nbsp;Agora&nbsp;(2006),&nbsp;106 upright figures, made of iron and&nbsp;each standing&nbsp;nine feet tall,&nbsp;permanently&nbsp;installed in Grant Park.

Abakanowicz told The Chicago Tribune in 2005,&nbsp;&ldquo;Every sculpture can be turned into decoration. But if you have 100, you are confronted by them and must think and imagine and question yourself. This is what I want.&rdquo;

Her first North American retrospective was organized at the <a href="https://mcachicago.org/Exhibitions/1982/Magdalena-Abakanowicz">Museum of Contemporary Art</a> in Chicago in 1982. She has works in the museum&#39;s permanent collection.&nbsp;

Throughout her long and prolific career she has developed a distinctive sculptural language that is specific to her recollections of life in Communist-ruled Eastern Europe while remaining open to universal readings of human struggle. Her installations often portray crowds of headless or faceless bodies as somber testimonies to ongoing personal, societal, and international violence. Mutations brings together sculptures from the past thirty-five years in an installation that emphasizes the sculpture&rsquo;s materials and symbolic impact. 
 
Magdalena Abakanowicz was born in Falenty, Poland in 1930 and studied painting at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. She was a foundational voice in the development of avant-garde sculpture beginning in the 1960s, particularly challenging the use of fiber as a sculptural material. By the 1970s, she had established herself as a presence in the global art community.

She is regarded as one of the most influential sculptors of the Post War period. Her powerful portrayal of the figure explores the human condition, the relationship between man and nature, and social and political histories pertaining to her experience in Soviet-occupied Poland. 
 
Her earliest mature works&mdash;monumental, soft textile sculptures called Abakans that she completed when she was in her early thirties&mdash;won the artist international recognition in an era when very few Polish citizens were permitted to travel abroad. Since that time, Abakanowicz has become best known for her unique treatment of the human figure, often headless and modeled in found burlap or cast in bronze, representing our capacity to follow a leader or movement blindly, without thought. At the same time, she creates each form by hand, emphasizing the individuality that remains, even in the crowd.

Other notable forthcoming programs include Show the World: 150 Years of Chicago Art and Design, a four-part documentary produced by WTTW-TV (PBS) and Into the City: A History of Chicago Art published by University of Chicago Press.

Terra Foundation Announces Yearlong Initiative to Explore Impact of Chicago's Art and Design Legacy

<a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/art-services/expo-chicago">EXPO Chicago</a> announced details for their new partnership with Palais de Tokyo, the <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/institutions/dusable-museum">DuSable Museum of African American History</a>, and the Institut Fran&ccedil;ais. With the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, these four organizations have come together to present a group&nbsp;exhibition at the DuSable Museum&#39;s Roundhouse, which will coincide with EXPO Art Week (September 13-17, 2017) and the <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2017/3/chicago-architecture-biennial-announces-2017-participants">opening of the second Chicago Architecture Biennial</a> (September 16, 2017-January 8, 2018).

Chicago architecture firm Burnham and Root designed the Roundhouse as equestrian stables for the 1893 World&rsquo;s Columbian Exposition. Despite the prestige of the space, it has been vacant for more than 50 years. The DuSable Museum acquired the building in 2005 and has spent time raising funds to reconstruct and restore it to its original state.

The expansive 17,000-sq. ft. building with a vaulted ceiling, decorative windows, natural sunlight, and impressive acoustics will now serve as an ambitious exhibition space for 12 artists selected by curator Katell Jaffr&egrave;s of Palais de Tokyo and guest designer Andrew Schachman, who was nominated by the Graham Foundation. Jaffr&egrave;s, who spoke at the press conference on Tuesday, is still in the process of selecting artists but envisions five structures within the space, which will serve &ldquo;as works of art able to welcome other works of art.&rdquo; The participating artists, who will be&nbsp;representative both of the Chicago art scene and the Francophone world, will install site-specific works of art in the building.

A number of representatives from&nbsp;particpating institutions attended the&nbsp;announcement including Tony Karman, president of EXPO; Jean de Loisy, president of Palais de Tokyo; Perri L. Irmer, president of the DuSable Museum; Fabrice Rozie, cultural attach&eacute; of the French Embassy, along with Mark Kelly, Commissioner for the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events in Chicago.

Kelly expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership noting that the confluence of the Roundhouse exhibition, EXPO Chicago, the Chicago Architecture Biennial and the city&rsquo;s Year of Public Art would provide an opportunity for &quot;all of Chicago&quot; to engage in the celebration of art, architecture and design. The <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2017/1/the-city-of-chicago-designates-2017-the-year-of-public-art">2017 Public Art initiative</a> promises&nbsp;art installations in all of the Chicago&#39;s 50 wards, a move to assuage criticism that the city&#39;s funds are diverted largely to downtown areas to increase tourism.

The partnership is also significant because it marks the beginning of Palais de Tokyo&rsquo;s Hors les Murs initiative, which presents off-site exhibitions around the world. Rozie emphasized that &ldquo;the choice of Chicago is not random,&rdquo; and that the French Embassy, along with Palais de Tokyo, is invested in engaging with cultural and educational partners across the South Side of Chicago.

Hors les Murs at the Roundhouse will be open to the public September 12-October 29, 2017.&nbsp;

The sixth edition of EXPO Chicago will now include an installation at the DuSable Museum's newly renovated Roundhouse. 

EXPO Chicago & Palais de Tokyo Announce New Partnership with DuSable Museum

The Chicago Architecture Biennial announced participants for its second edition, Make New History,&nbsp;scheduled to open September 16, 2017. The biennial, led by artistic directors Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee&nbsp;of Johnston Marklee,&nbsp;will feature the work of more than 100 architects, artists, designers&nbsp;and firms from around the world.

Chicago Architecture Biennial Announces 2017 Participants

<a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/kavi-gupta">Kavi Gupta</a> announced&nbsp;that Chicago-based&nbsp;gallery artist McArthur Binion will be featured in the 57th Venice Biennale, which opens in May.&nbsp;

Viva Arte Viva&nbsp;will be curated by Christine Macel.&nbsp;The 57th International Art Exhibition is open to the public May 13&ndash;November 26, 2017, at the&nbsp;Giardini and the&nbsp;Arsenale in Venice, Italy.&nbsp;

120 artists are part of this year&#39;s exhibition, down from 136 last year, and the curator has said that her emphasis will be on the artists and how they see and interpret society today, rather than a unifying themes. Binion is the only Chicago-based artist on this year&#39;s list.&nbsp;

New Annual CGN Arts Guide Is Here

One of Chicago&rsquo;s leading arts institutions has hit middle-age: The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2017. Grounded in a mission devoted to the curation of contemporary art and to performance through experimentation and collaboration, today the MCA claims an expansive, diverse collection of contemporary works as well as a range of socially-conscious programs, artist initiatives and community outreach. Many influential international artists can trace their start back to exhibitions nurtured here &ndash; the MCA hosted Jeff Koons&rsquo;s first solo museum show.

The MCA first opened at 237 E Ontario (the former Playboy headquarters) as a Kunsthalle&mdash;non-collecting art hall&mdash;in 1967. Over the past half century the MCA became the first building wrapped by Christo in the United States (1969), established a permanent collection, commissioned a building to house that collection (the present space opened in 1996 at 220 E Chicago), presented a landmark survey of Chicago artists and artistic traditions &ndash; Art in Chicago, 1945&ndash;1995 &ndash; began a noted public plaza series, and much more.

A 50th birthday is an honor. Anniversary celebrations will continue throughout the year, including a major, three-part exhibition on view from the end of October through January 28, 2018, titled, I Am You, You Are Here, We Are Everywhere.

An October 21 opening for the exhibition is a public event, and all are encouraged to attend. Afterall, a party is always more fun with friends.

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago celebrates its 50th year with special events and major exhibitions.

A Museum of the New Turns 50: The MCA’s Big Birthday

2017 marks the second celebration of the Chicago Architecture Biennial. In partnership with City of Chicago, EXPO Chicago and others, the biennial will explore the theme MAKE NEW HISTORY by presenting diverse work from local, national and international architects. The Chicago cityscape will serve as the backdrop for the development of new architectural projects, proposals, and experiments that consider role of architectural traditions within progress and innovation.

More than half a million Chicago residents and tourists attended the 2015 Biennial. The focus this year will again be on engagement with the public by using the Chicago Cultural Center as the main hub. The Cultural Center, along with Hyde Park Art Center, The Beverly Art Center and others, will host a full schedule of exhibitions, events, and public programming.

Architects Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee will serve as artistic directors. Their firm, Johnston Marklee, has completed projects in North and South American, Europe and Asia and is currently working on a renovation of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, which is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2017.

The Biennial will take place from September 16-January 7, 2018, and the opening with align with the sixth annual EXPO Chicago, which will run September 13-17 at Navy Pier.

Second Chicago Architecture Biennial to Coincide with Sixth EXPO Chicago

50 years ago on August 15, 1967, Pablo Picasso&rsquo;s 50-foot tall, abstract steel sculpture was donated to the city and unveiled in Daley Plaza. Chicago&rsquo;s long and rich tradition of making public art an accessible, often times literally monumental, part of our every day lives, has only continued to expand and evolve.

Today, thousands of tourists visit Anish Kapoor&rsquo;s Cloud Gate (known more casually as &ldquo;The Bean&rdquo;) and just as many local children splash in the spray of Jaume Plensa&rsquo;s interactive, face changing Crown Fountain each summer. It is art that gives Chicago much of its creative character and international appeal. In recognition of this legacy, The City of Chicago has announced a Public Art initiative and schedule for the entire year; the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events has coined 2017 as the Year of Public Art, with a slate of planned public exhibitions, and pledged a $1.5 million investment designated to support permanent public art installations throughout the city&rsquo;s 50 wards.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, expressing a personal interest in public art projects notes, &ldquo;There is no question that art is vital to a neighborhood&rsquo;s spirit and the quality of life for residents.&rdquo;

The program is designed to share art with residents in every single neighborhood, not just the downtown tourist centers. Events will showcase several neighborhoods and their unique creativity. Venues include DuSable Museum of African American History, South Side Community Art Center, Daley Plaza, National Museum of Mexican Art, and more. A significant cornerstone for the Year of Public Art will be the Public Art Festival premiering in the fall and offering free activities for people of all ages.&nbsp;
