This painting conveys the artist’s feelings of isolation and self-doubt that show up continuously throughout her body of work. Abercrombie scholar Susan Weininger notes that it is “a powerful statement about how one’s internal deficiencies can limit external actions.” Bidders were clearly struck by the work and drove the price up to far above its $60,000-80,000 estimate. The report offers specific treatment recommendations for the monuments under review, including taking the monument down, modifying the monument by commissioning another artwork and/or adding additional signage. While the City works through the recommendations, which will require time and the involvement of various City agencies, CMP recommends that signage for all work currently on display be updated.&nbsp;New WorkAs part of its engagement process, CMP released a call, “Reimagining Monuments: Request for Ideas,” to solicit proposals from individual artist and community groups that rethink the place, purpose, and permanence of monuments in our public spaces. In addition, DCASE and Parks commissioned a number of demonstration projects through their public art and grant programs that signified the potential for new types of monuments that highlight diverse approaches and stories. A number of key action items emerged across proposals and demonstration projects, including engaging and interpreting the City’s existing public art collection; achieving greater visibility for American Indians; reexamining Chicago’s history, considering unsung people and underrecognized stories; and prioritizing programs led by or engaging youth.&nbsp;In the near term, the City will award $50,000 planning and implementation grants toward the development of eight new projects, which will add—permanently or temporarily—to the City’s collection and memorialize events, people or groups that historically have been excluded or underrepresented. Among the new works awardees are:<ul><li>The Greater Chatham Initiative for a Mahalia Jackson memorial</li><li>Artists and community groups for a monument to historic events and people that have shaped the Latina/x experience in the Pilsen neighborhood</li><li>The Mother Jones Heritage Project</li><li>Community organizations working to create a monument to honor Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable and Kitihawa, his wife and a local Potawatomi woman</li><li>Artist Patricia Nguyen and architectural designer John Lee for the Chicago Torture Justice Memorial concept</li><li>The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project</li><li>A Long Walk Home, for its “Visibility Project” proposal centering on Black women and girls</li><li>A community-led monument to victims of gun violence in Chicago</li></ul>&nbsp;Public Engagement ProcessThe CMP conducted extensive public engagement efforts throughout 2021 to gain feedback on the monuments under review, begin a dialogue about who and what has not been memorialized and solicit ideas and recommendations for future monuments. Engagement modes included:<ul><li>Open-ended public feedback form on the CMP website; online speaker series examining key issues around Chicago’s monuments</li><li>Community-based groups presenting virtual public discussions on specific monuments</li><li>“Drop-in” virtual discussion sessions with CMP advisory committee members and DCASE staff</li><li>Virtual conversations with eight community stakeholder groups: African American, American Indian, Italian America, Latinx, leadership of culturally specific organizations, disability, historic preservation and youth</li><li>American Indian representation developed in partnership with Chicago American Indian Community Collaborative (CAICC)</li><li>Solicitation of project ideas from individual artist and community group for the development of new monuments that rethink the place, purpose and permanence of monuments in our public spaces.</li></ul>“This report looks to the future and recognizes that this is just one phase in an ongoing process. Just as we are reconsidering the permanence of the monuments themselves, the recommendations included in this report are not the final word on the complex, ever-evolving issues related to justice, public space and our shared history. The CMP does not intend for the interventions suggested here to preclude later actions that might further correct or expand the narratives in our public spaces. Chicago, a 4500 sq ft space she built from the ground up, on July 30.&nbsp;The move from the physical to the online means that she is selling off the contents of the gallery space (other than the art.) River North Design District Announces Plans for September Gallery Walk

We invite all artists to respond to the current state of our country by exhibiting an original work of art or performance in public. This artwork/performance can be displayed outside a home, on a lawn, from a window visible to the public, or through an artist formed partnership with a local business between August 15-September 30, 2022. This collective action provides artists and community members in neighborhoods throughout the country (and world) a way to connect with one another. <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/06/27/1107915923/artist-sam-gilliam-died">Artist Sam Gilliam has died at 88</a>One of the most important and influential abstract visual artists in the U.S. has died: Sam Gilliam, a great colorist whose work influenced generations of artists, was 88 years old. Gilliam's death on Saturday was announced by the Pace Gallery, which had represented him since 2019, and the David Kordansky Gallery, which had represented him since 2012. The cause of death was not disclosed.Gilliam was born in Tupelo, Miss., in 1933 as the seventh child of eight to a father who worked on the railroad and a homemaking mother. He attended the University of Louisville for both bachelor's and master's degrees, but in 1962 moved to Washington, D.C., where he lived and had his studio for the rest of his life. Douglas Endowed Memorial Scholarship. As an artist, Estrada Hernandez utilizes her experiences growing up in the United States as a young immigrant to create work that addresses social and political problems surrounding Latinx migrant communities. Chicago Printmakers Announces Bloom Residents

<figure class="image"><img src="https://mcusercontent.com/9e4250b7536dc23e9352b28ee/images/767a6bba-97e8-a5c3-64e0-440a94e33e21.jpg" alt=""><figcaption>Photo via MoCP</figcaption></figure>Via&nbsp;PR&nbsp;Chicago —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mocp.org">The&nbsp;Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago (MoCP)</a> held&nbsp;DARKROOM, their annual benefit auction on Thursday,&nbsp;June 2, 2022, bringing in $230,000&nbsp;to support the museum.&nbsp;Funds raised at DARKROOM will provide critical support for the museum's exhibitions, collections, and community engagement initiatives&nbsp;for the&nbsp;2022-2023 season.&nbsp;The event was held at the Columbia College Chicago Student Center, located at 754 S. Wabash Avenue in the South Loop, and was co-chaired by Jennifer and Joe Shanahan. &nbsp; Over 300 guests in attendance enjoyed hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and music while perusing auction items by celebrated contemporary artists. Works sold included pieces by Dawoud Bey, Terry Evans, Ayana Jackson, Dawit Petros, Alec Soth, Edra Soto, and Penelope Umbrico. The benefit auction was presented by Sotheby’s. &nbsp; Many individuals and corporate sponsors gave their support for the MoCP, including Gage Hospitality Group and Seaberg Picture Framing. &nbsp; Longtime MoCP supporters Lawrence K. and Maxine Snider were honored during the evening for their contributions to the museum. For the past decade, they have sponsored the&nbsp;<a href="https://mocp.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9e4250b7536dc23e9352b28ee&amp;id=cbd6d93b77&amp;e=58cea278c7">Snider Prize</a>, which&nbsp;is a purchase award given to emerging artists in their final year of graduate study by the museum annually. The Snider Prize encapsulates the museum's ongoing commitment to support new talent in the field of contemporary photography. Recent recipients Kei Ito and Alayna N Pernell were in attendance to help honor them. &nbsp; "We are so grateful for our sponsors and everyone who helped make DARKROOM 2022 our most successful benefit auction to date.
