Martine Syms: She Mad Season One

The MCA presents a solo exhibition of Martine Syms, a multidisciplinary artist who explores representations of Blackness in the media and the ways archetypes, conventions, and stereotypes are perpetuated through familiar forms such as TV commercials and American sitcoms. This exhibition will feature five videos including the US premiere of a fictional, semi-autobiographical pilot for a new TV series inspired by the artist’s experience at a Tyra Banks summer camp in her youth. Presented in an immersive environment, the exhibition invites visitors to think deeply about the structure of media and its creation of problematic cultural norms. 

Martine Syms is on view at Bergen Kunsthall, Norway, from November 12, 2021 to January 16, 2022, and travels to the MCA from July 2, 2022 to February 12, 2023.
