Corbett vs. Dempsey is very pleased to present William Parker in a rare solo performance. William Parker (b. 1952) is one of the masters of creative music. A pivotal figure in the New York improvised music scene since he emerged as one of its most active double bassists in the 1970s, Parker came to prominence in various ensembles led by pianist Cecil Taylor; in the last five decades, he has worked with virtually every player in improvised music and he has led his own bands, including Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra and In Order to Survive. A powerful and original bass player, Parker has also dedicated himself to an assortment of other instruments, including various flutes and plucked instruments, such as the West African kora and doussn'gouni. Parker is a hugely generous figure who works tirelessly as a mentor and spark plug for innovative music. He will be in Chicago to perform at the yearly Winter Solstice Evening Concerts with percussionists Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake at Links Hall on December 21 and 22. Rhona Hoffman Gallery’s &nbsp;exhibition, These Times, opens on Friday, November 1, 2024, and features works by artists Bassim Al-Shaker, Thomas Hirschhorn, Annette Lemieux, Brian Maguire, Michael Rakowitz, and Paul Seawright. Each work is a witness's view of a specific human condition from disparate modern-day histories and geographies. These paintings, photographs, and prints probe their subject matter as a reflection of reality, not embellished but provocative.&nbsp;Bassim Al Shaker (b. 1986 Baghdad, Iraq) is a New York-based artist and filmmaker. Al Shaker received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his BFA from the University of Baghdad College of Fine Arts. Al Shaker has exhibited work in Documenta Fifteen (Kassel, Germany); The Venice Biennale for the Iraqi Pavilion; The Arizona State University Art Museum (Tempe, AZ); FLXST Contemporary (Chicago, IL); and MANA Contemporary (Chicago, IL), among other venues. His work has been written about in publications such as The New York Times, ArtNews, Artnet, e-flux, NewCity, WBEZ Chicago, and Phoenix New Times. Thomas Hirschhorn (b. 1957 Bern, Switzerland) studied at Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich before relocating to Paris in 1983, where he continues to live and work. Hirschhorn's art, shown worldwide at venues like Documenta11, Venice Biennale, and São Paulo Biennale, often explores public space to challenge ideas of authorship, autonomy, and the transformative power of art. Known for monumental projects such as the Spinoza and Gramsci Monuments, Hirschhorn dedicates his work to thinkers and artists who inspire him, aiming to provoke connection and dialogue. He has received numerous awards, including the Marcel Duchamp Prize and the Kurt Schwitters Prize, and his works are in prominent collections globally, including MoMA, Tate Modern, and Centre Pompidou. Annette Lemieux (b.1957 Norfolk, Virginia) is a key figure in post-Conceptualist art, known for her pioneering work in painting, assemblage, and photomontage, influenced by Minimalism and Pop art. A member of the generation that shaped “Picture Theory,” Lemieux uses readymade media images to engage with contemporary social and political themes, continually inviting new interpretations of her work. Her art has been widely exhibited in institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the New Museum, New York; and Castello di Rivoli in Italy, and is held in collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and the Whitney. Lemieux has received numerous awards, including grants from the NEA and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, as well as an honorary doctorate from Montserrat College of Art. Brian Maguire, based in Dublin and Paris, creates paintings centered on themes of inequality, violence, and justice, viewing his practice as an act of solidarity that rehumanizes and recenters marginalized voices. Deeply socially engaged, he collaborates with refugees, survivors, and the incarcerated in places like Sudan, Syria, and Ciudad Juárez, using a subject-led approach that strives to “repay the debt” to his subjects. Maguire’s work, inspired by direct observations in conflict zones, aligns with war reportage yet transforms these testimonies into powerful artworks. His use of painterly techniques introduces a tension between aesthetic allure and the raw reality of his subject matter, urging viewers into an ethical and poetic engagement with his art. Michael Rakowitz, an Iraqi-American artist living in Chicago, explores the intersections of art, activism, and cultural heritage. Known for projects that challenge norms, Rakowitz has exhibited globally, including at dOCUMENTA (13), MoMA, Tate Modern, and the Istanbul Biennial. His solo shows span major institutions like MCA Chicago, SITE Santa Fe, and the Whitechapel Gallery in London. His art, rooted in themes of memory and conflict, invites viewers to reconsider cultural narratives. Honored with awards such as the 2020 Nasher Prize and the Fourth Plinth commission in London, Rakowitz is represented by Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Jane Lombard Gallery, and Barbara Wien Galerie, among others. Northern Irish photographer Paul Seawright is known for his work exploring conflict and memory. His early series, Sectarian Murder (1988), documents the sectarian violence of 1970s Belfast, pairing images with newspaper text. During a 1997 residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, he returned to Belfast to document defensive architecture in North and West Belfast amid the early ceasefire. In 2002, he was commissioned by the Imperial War Museum to capture Afghanistan’s battlefields. Seawright has exhibited widely in Europe, North America, and Asia. Seawright represented Wales at the 2003 Venice Biennale, and his work is held in collections including Tate and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. He is currently a Professor of Photography and Head of Belfast School of Art at Ulster University and is represented by Kerlin Gallery in Dublin.

(northern) Western Exhibitions is thrilled to present a solo show devoted to Elijah Burgher’s works depicting sigils. Burgher’s paintings, drawings and prints sit at the intersections of representation and abstraction, image and language, and the real and imagined. Drawing from the occult, mythology, daily life and ancient history, he has created an intimate code of symbolism that traces the personal and cultural dynamics of desire, belief and subcultural formation.&nbsp;A List of Wishes will begin on Sunday, October 20 during regular gallery hours, 12-4pm at our location in Skokie, (northern) Western Exhibitions, 7933 N Lincoln Ave., Skokie, IL. The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) is excited to announce its upcoming exhibition, Agency: Craft In Chicago from the 1970s-80s and Beyond, opening on Saturday, September 21, 2024, with an Opening Reception from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Part of Art Design Chicago, this exhibition explores the rise of high-craft in Chicago art from the 1970s through the 1980s and its impact on contemporary artists, especially those on the margins, such as immigrant, women, LGBTQ, Black, and other artists of color.The exhibition highlights how Chicago artists navigated a landscape shaped by economic barriers, limited access to formal education, and evolving gallery systems. Many artists turned to alternative spaces, such as art fairs and DIY venues, which offered more exposure and financial viability compared to traditional galleries. Focusing on craft, class, and cultural context, the exhibition explores how accessibility and economic constraints influenced artistic production. For many, the cost of art education and the commitment required were significant barriers. In response, artists embraced DIY approaches, innovating with traditional materials and breaking away from New York-centric standards.Chicago's cultural and political climate of the 1970s and 1980s—marked by activism, the women’s movement, and civil rights efforts—also shaped the art scene. Government programs like the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) encouraged creativity, even as funding remained limited. This spurred artists to assert their agency and make their voices heard.The exhibition also addresses tensions in Chicago's art community between maintaining high production values and resisting conformity to norms. Steve Geer presents Skyscraper Magic, a group of architectural images that show Chicago’s skyscrapers from unusual and thought-provoking kaleidoscopic worms-eye viewpoints. Having seen these images, when you’re next in the city you will want to look up and imagine.Kurt Kramer captures the intimate and beautiful environs that we pass through daily.&nbsp;He presents photographs of these scenes, and the people in them, in his exhibit “All Around Us”.&nbsp;Through careful selection of viewpoint, timing, and light he creates visually striking compositions that showcase the often-overlooked beauty. Punctuating each photograph with a human presence, he captures the perfect moment when a person’s location, movements, and gestures add interest and meaning.&nbsp;The exhibit includes color and black-and-white images captured in Chicago in the last 18 months.&nbsp;With his photographs, Kurt encourages viewers to observe the beauty and humanity that are … all around us.

Born into a family of painters, Michael Patterson was born in Hudson, New York. Howard Ashman Patterson, his grandfather, was an established American painter whose work continually influences and inspires Michael. Patterson graduated from Suny Purchase with honors, studying printmaking, painting, and sculpture. Patterson has been traveling and painting for over 35 years, finding inspiration wherever he goes. Having lived in France for several years, he has shown his work throughout Europe as well as the United States. Patterson draws inspiration from city streets, people at the beach, people playing music, and general human expression. Patterson has traveled across the Americas and Europe, where his paintings are also held in numerous private and corporate collections.My work has focus on several objectives. Light, reflected light and its color effects, as well as the positive and negative shapes of equal importance, creating the graphic energy of my compositions. This sets the rhythm for a piece and influences where the viewer’s eye travels and at what pace. I include curved lines with straight, organic shapes juxtaposed geometric shapes woven together, always conscious of the line created by any color masses converging. This line flows throughout, interrupted, yet continuous. Finally, the subject of my work most always includes the human figure wherever they may be- city streets, markets, the beach, alone or in groups. People are the most interesting part of creation.He continues to paint and create sculptures of carved stone and also welded metal. His residence and studio are located on a river in Connecticut, where he lives with his wife, Jessyka.

Shadowplay: The Art of Michael Patterson

Elefante is a solo exhibition by renowned Mexican artist, author, and filmmaker Leopoldo Goût, featuring a dynamic range of multimedia works. With a bold, maximalist vision, the exhibition spans textiles, bronze sculptures, paintings, video, and sound, exploring Goût’s enduring obsession with contradictions, dreams, and the ephemeral nature of existence. International in scope and deeply tied to Goût’s decades-long career, Elefante portrays image-making as a migratory journey.Leopoldo Goût is an artist, writer, and filmmaker who works across mediums to capture the ephemeral: an abstract and figurative clash with memory and humanity, with chaos. Born in Mexico City, Goût grew up among poets, musicians, explorers, activists, filmmakers, scientists, and visual artists. Their stories and ideas inspired Goût, who quickly became part of that community. He embarked on numerous artistic pursuits: painting, drawing, sculpture, filmmaking, digital art, soundscapes, performance, and more. He studied in London at the renowned Central Saint Martins School of Art through a full scholarship from the Mexican Center for the Arts and the British Council. He also won the Erasmus scholarship, despite not being European.&nbsp;It was at school that he began to approach his work as a kaleidoscope of references that inhabit and obscure easy origins and meaning. “I want to emulate and echo that fleeting moment when you wake from an intensely vivid dream, but immediately those images and senses start to dissipate,” Goût says. “I believe my work lives in that ephemeral space. Now you see it, now you don’t.” What may at first appear random, without any form whatsoever, is in reality a carefully crafted, unique perspective on what it means to be conscious. All his projects, including films&nbsp;and novels, influence each other in unexpected ways. Health in Space: Daring to Explore

The show includes thirty-five paintings by the artists, capturing landscapes, shorelines and interior settings in and around their Northern Michigan studios. Melanie Parke's paintings combine brilliant color with and familiar objects and beautiful views to create a sense of sense of comfort, pleasure and nostalgia. Each of her canvases reflects an intuitive sense of composition, balance and light. Richard Kooyman's work is inspired by fleeting moments he observes in the landscape that surrounds his studio. With smooth brushstrokes and rich color, he captures tree lines, sand dunes, and sunlit waters, creating an emotional connection to a specific place in time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Guild RoomFor nearly twenty years, David Gista’s work has focused on books and libraries, creating paintings depicting various subjects within libraries or interacting with books. His exhibition explores our relationship with knowledge and information in a hyper-technological society, questioning whether books are merely objects and if libraries are becoming sanctuaries of a fading physical world.Gista’s work often transforms books into shapes and colors reminiscent of pixels, highlighting the tension between the material and digital worlds. He uses traditional mediums like paint to emphasize this paradox. One notable technique involves drawing on paper with a torch flame, symbolizing both revelation and destruction, referencing historical book burnings and censorship.Gista’s “burnt drawings” embody both ambivalence and ambiguity through themes that reflect on the intersection of nature and technology. Sacristy GalleryWith a penchant for color and contrast, Ortiz combines a variety of colors, patterns, and forms from multiple sources such as ethnographic patterns (Native American pottery and baskets, Islamic tiles, and Italian mosaics), architectural elements (antique vent/register covers, tin ceiling tiles, stained glass windows, wallpaper, and African printed textiles), and botanical forms (florals - orchids, succulents, and most recently focusing on the rose). Catacombs GallerySince 2011, Holly Holmes has explored the tension between abstraction and representation. Her work resonates with the facts, readings, and translations of life’s elements, which she conveys through recurring themes, forms, textures, and colors. Travel, whether daily commutes or overseas trips, plays a crucial role in her art. Holmes meticulously chronicles her experiences, translating them into paintings and tufted rugs. She creates sketches on the go, using them in the studio alongside her memories and emotions to produce images that reflect direct observation and emotional resonance.Holmes’ process involves constant examination and reexamination, which extends to her painting and color mixing with yarn. Recently, she has been creating paired tufted and painted works, allowing her to make creative decisions fluidly. While acrylic paint offers immediacy and ease of experimentation, working with yarn is more time-consuming, requiring careful blending and consideration. By alternating between these mediums, Holmes can test an idea in one place and realize and refine it in the other. Slemmons GalleryAn active painter and sculptor since the early eighties, Mossman's work has always involved the relationships inherent in elements and objects within a given space. Through his sculpture, Mossman’s geometric forms interact with architectural elements within a space and comment on the viewer’s relationship with the work, and existing elements such as soffits, baseboards, ceiling height, windows, and doors, among other features within a space. For this reason, the viewer never finds his sculpture placed at eye-level, where one would find a painting, and subsequently, ignores the rest of the room. Mossman’s paintings also pose this challenge, as elements within the work, such as color, perspective, and composition, work together to push the limits of a flat canvas. Painted tableaus derived from postcard images are paired with illusionistic space to create windows within the canvas.
