Jewelry Through the Ages: Georgian to Modern

With work from Jennifer Merchant, Emiko Oye and Nikki Couppee, the exhibition features three artists that are transforming plastic into wearable works of art. Plastic is undoubtedly a part of our everyday lives, and is an often overlooked material for jewelry. But this transformation from ordinary to something spectacular calls into question: how do we place value on objects? What is cherished? Each artist has their own unique way of interpreting these questions and reinventing the material by tapping into intuition, with color remaining a key component to the work.

Opening Reception: Friday, March 7, 2025, 5-8pm Proliferate, by artist Nicole Havekost, is of a series of ten works on paper. Made with traditional drawing materials, the artist pokes holes through the paper, creating a white, swollen perforation on the front. Using ovoid forms, the artist references voids and tears, and interiors and exteriors through accumulated gestures. David Najib Kasir: Math of Four Minute Warnings 

Trees and mountains breathe out peace.&nbsp;Splashes of color vibrate with the energy of life and movement.&nbsp;Her visually poetic paintings create a close relationship&nbsp;between the beauty of nature and its beholder. The Honorable Dr. Catherine Yi-yu Cho Woo (1935-2021) was an accomplished poet, composer, painter, teacher, and writer. She was the first Asian American woman to serve on the National Council on the Arts, and was honored by the National Endowment for the Arts.&nbsp; Her paintings have been described as visual poems, because of the simplicity, intensity, and purity of her expressions. A master of Feng Shui, the 4,000-year-old Chinese art of designing one’s environment to maximize the flow of positive energy (ch’i), she channeled into her works an insight into beauty and peacefulness.&nbsp; Dr. Woo was the rare artist who could address both scholarly and mainstream audiences. She authored nine books in Chinese and English on Chinese literature, art, and culture.&nbsp; The body of Catherine&nbsp;Woo’s life work is&nbsp;based on the idea that the flow of universal energy, or qi (ch'i) -&nbsp;the life force that inhabits everything - the material principle that governs the universe&nbsp;- can be directed through landscapes and bodies of water.&nbsp; The key principle of ch'i is the balancing of the yin and yang,&nbsp;opposite&nbsp;but complementary forces, ever-changing, yet in balance.&nbsp;By being&nbsp;interdependent, they create&nbsp;each other through their existence and movement. Dr. Woo taught that&nbsp;everything must be in equilibrium for&nbsp;harmony and health as the interaction of these opposing forces produces that ch’i.&nbsp; As 2025 is year of the Wood Snake in the Chinese zodiac, characteristics such as growth, wisdom,&nbsp;tolerance, passion, energy, transformation and brightness will surface.&nbsp;Symbolically, this year is considered a return to one’s true nature, a year of self reflection, self-discovery, creativity and inner growth. It is a symbol of rebirth and eternity, the continuous renewal of life.&nbsp; Dr. Woo believed that there is no separation in art and life.&nbsp;&nbsp;She taught the way of&nbsp;“wind and water,” by capturing the special forces of life through her use of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water.

Beyond Frames: Black Women Collectors Shaping Chicago’s Cultural Heritage

ENGAGE Projects is delighted to announce our upcoming exhibition “a factual account” by Chicago artist Alberto Aguilar. Utilizing the ubiquitous tools of everyday objects and interpersonal exchange, Aguilar makes a career out of his way of moving through the world. The gallery will serve as host to pragmatic object arrangements and daily studio sweeps transplanted from his art space Mayfield as well as reflexive text paintings, photos, sound and video resulting from his exchanges with others. With a foundation in signage, symbols, and monuments, Aguilar delves into a world of meaning-making out of arbitrariness, bringing order, logic, and humor to the ‘stuff’ of our lives. His unique spirit of anti-archiving is improper and unruly; if archiving is the endeavor of organizing for safekeeping and viewing, Aguilar is more interested in the activation of objects through their orientation and proximity to one another. Chiefly, Aguilar is a student of alternative modes of communication, creating an exhibition with an acute attention to being. Aguilar is the recipient of the Latinx Artist Fellowship and has appeared in the Creative Independent and the NYU Latinx Project. This special exhibition features a diverse collection of works that highlight creativity, growth, and exploration in various mediums.

PATRON is proud to announce&nbsp;the other, our first solo exhibition with Chicago based artist Miao Wang (b. 1988). Wang’s materially committed practice honors a human, physical relationship to the passage, and reality of time. Working largely with materials that hold material connections to historical and contemporary Chinese aesthetic traditions, filtered through the Western monochromatic canon, Wang has developed a unique conceptual language of abstraction. In&nbsp;the other, Wang presents four distinct bodies of work, each representing the artist’s relationship, through repeated gesture, to notions of doubling, kindred beings, or, in her words, “an expression, and it's shadow.”&nbsp; Wang’s delicate watercolor paintings are developed through the repetitive physical engagement with sheets of synthetic YUPO paper, water, and pigment. The layers upon layers of nearly translucent washes, capture minute shifts within the physical conditions and environment of the studio, traces of dust, light, temperature and humidity. Documents of the artist’s experience with it and on it, the surfaces’ abstract marks evidence the environmental and physical conditions that impact the creative process, in the way that our bodies bear the residue of our memories and emotions.&nbsp; In the initial gallery, seven of Wang’s red watercolors form a serial grouping. Using layers of the same mixed pigment on mass-produced paper in predetermined sizes, subtle differences emerge across the paintings’ surfaces, calling attention to the minute details of individuality in each, such as the artist’s finger marks along the edges of the paintings, residue of her process. This communion of similarity and difference disperses in the next gallery, where Wang presents a complete grouping of diptychs– two paintings which are intended to be installed together–oppositionally across the gallery from each other. In producing these diptychs, Wang doubles her process, performing the same gesture twice. Each painting is unique, while echoing and negating the other’s uniqueness.&nbsp; the other&nbsp;coalesces with a series of watercolor paintings formed initially by two pooled black watercolor dots. Through a gentle bending of the YUPO paper, each pool runs across the surface into fragmented limb-like markings. Wang’s forms here begin with two fingerprint-like spots which bleed into the otherworldly, and the tenuous, capital “I” of the self. The tension between the self and the other culminates in a pair of monolithic cyanotypes on drywall panels, developed in ​​an outdoor environment by moonlight. Each surface reveals subtle differences of light, shadow, and atmosphere—distinct experiences within our shared cosmic time against the mass-produced world of language and architecture.&nbsp;

Closing Reception and Artist Walkthrough

Vertical Gallery is very proud to present ‘We From the Heavens,’ a solo showcase for Chicago-born, Los Angeles-based painter and illustrator Troy Lee. ‘We From the Heavens,’ which runs March 7-29, heralds a daring new chapter in Lee’s career and creative evolution, shifting the artist’s emphasis from feminine sexuality to masculine vulnerability. The exhibit’s soul-baring paintings and sketches aggressively interrogate the perceptions and realities confronting Black men in contemporary America — how they’re seen in the media, and how they see themselves in the mirror.&nbsp; ‘We From the Heavens’ brings Lee back to Chicago five years after he left the city to live and work in southern California. The native South Sider drew incessantly throughout childhood, and at age 15 he signed up for a Little Black Pearl-sponsored after-school art program, studying under the tutelage of painter and muralist Hebru Brantley, a longtime mentor. Lee interned for Brantley while attending the Art Institute of Chicago, eventually dropping out to focus on his professional pursuits; a pair of local solo exhibits preceded his Vertical debut in 2021. He has since participated in multiple group shows at the gallery. Join us at VSG Contemporary on February 15th for the opening of Tempest, a series of 13 new works by&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.jeancate.com/" target="_blank">Jean Cate</a>,&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://marthamae.info/" target="_blank">Martha Mae Art Supplies and Beautiful Things</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="http://not-a-cult.org/" target="_blank">The Center of Order and Experimentation</a>&nbsp;owner. Jean's current work revolves around the theme of changing atmosphere, drawing inspiration from nature’s dramatic forces—especially clouds. Captivated by the sky, Jean sees it as a visual metaphor for mental and emotional cycles. "For my upcoming show, I’ll be presenting Tempest, which reflects the stages of a storm—three families of paintings that come together as a trinity. I’m painting on raw birch panels using watercolor and gouache. Letting natural forces like water, air, and gravity shape the work."

While very different in style and subject, their work is similar in the way that it develops. Their processes often include repetition and mimicry, which serve as ways to dig deeper into the meaning of what each artist is exploring in their art.&nbsp; Cho’s mixed media on paper work is meant to be a commentary on her Korean American heritage, celebrating earnest but humorous attempts to pay homage to her transnational upbringing. Peltier’s work, on the other hand, is focused on what she sees in the world around her. She alters and then rearranges what she observes as part of an open-ended exploration. While Peltier studied printmaking and works extensively in that medium, this body of work is her first foray into painting.&nbsp; ﻿We hope you will stop by to see this wonderful work during the month of March! Radiance ExhibitionMarch 1st through 30th, 2025 Opening Reception:&nbsp;Saturday, March 1st, 2025 from 5 to 8 PM&nbsp; The “Radiance: Works About Light” Exhibition at the Grove Gallery in Evanston, IL&nbsp;features luminous paintings and drawings made by Midwestern Artists.&nbsp;See artists’ responses to light in various forms: refraction, lasers, nocturnes and the inner light of powerful female figures. The works vary from surreal, imaginative figures to abstract fields of color. Experience sensations of warmth, frigid temperatures, subtlety and expressive qualities in the work. The exhibition was juried by Sergio Gomez, artist and curator of the 33 Contemporary Gallery. He selected 20 paintings from the 250 that were submitted. The selected works vary in media: abstract oils, translucent watercolors, and shiny collage materials. Celebrate that the days are getting longer as we inch towards Springtime.
