Talk | Making New Monuments

To brighten this dark time of year, delve into the ideas and imaginations of three early 20th century artists for whom color was a key artistic element. We'll learn how these artists were influenced by Cubism while spawning roots in Surrealism, and talk about how their fascinating life stories affected their work. This program also includes recommended videos to get a sense of what the artists were like in person. For our second session, we’ll focus on Sonia and Robert Delaunay. Branching from Cubism in pre-WWI Paris, this married couple developed a vibrant visual language combining color and geometry. At times their work is extremely alike, while at other points they have distinct differences. Robert created ballet sets; Sonia created ballet costumes. When economic times were tough, Sonia brought her artistic vision to advertising, marketing, and her wearable art. Fall Exhibitions Closing Reception 

Fresh perspectives abound in Perspective Gallery’s new exhibit, “Flipside: From the Back + Beyond.” Opening January 4th, with a public reception January 11th from 5 to 7 p.m., the show features work from 18 gallery members.&nbsp;The display gives a fascinating glimpse into the creative workings of each photographer’s mind as they explore the world “from the back and beyond.”&nbsp; “It’s always exciting to see where people will go with a theme and having the chance to do this with all the members in one show, makes it more special,” says member Monica Kass Rogers. “No two photographers approach a subject the same way.”&nbsp;&nbsp;Creating with “Flipside” in mind, the imagery Perspective members produced runs the gamut from humorous, to darkly abstract, to dreamlike and conceptual. Flipside: From the Back + Beyond

GRAY is pleased to announce Torkwase Dyson: Of Line and Memory. For the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, Dyson debuts a pair of monumental sculptures, new paintings, and constructions in glass and wood. Of Line and Memory opens at GRAY Chicago with a public reception for the artist on November 8, 2024 and remains on view through January 25, 2025. Torkwase Dyson works across the disciplines of painting, drawing, installation, and sculpture, distilling the spatial and affective residues of diasporic histories to envision new modes of environmental liberation. Dyson approaches her work spatially and architecturally, crafting the gallery environment to holistically shape the viewers’ experience. Torkwase Dyson: Of Line and Memory

Mariane Ibrahim is pleased to announce the upcoming solo exhibition in Chicago by Eva Jospin, entitled&nbsp;Vanishing Points. The show will be on view from November 15, 2024 to January 25, 2025, and will mark the artist’s second exhibition with the gallery and her first in the U.S.&nbsp; In an age of rapid advancement in virtual and augmented reality, Eva Jospin roots her practice in questioning perspective itself. In her tridimensional sculptures and immersive installations, she activates the illusion of depth to shift direct perception and guide the eye to multiple dimensions within each artwork, transforming sight into a conscious, interiorized process. As she explains,&nbsp;“I try to address the landscape as one we are part of—when nature becomes not just a space we observe but one we are inside of, it transforms into an interior, imagined vision.”&nbsp; While the notion of linear perspective was first theorized in the 15th century by Leon Battista Alberti, Jospin’s practice expands this singularity. In&nbsp;Vanishing Points&nbsp;the artist underscores the impossibility of engaging in her work from a single viewpoint. This is formally evidenced in sculptural scenes that unveil their complexity when observed from varying angles, heights, and distances, conjuring a sense of immersion that evokes the presence and immediacy of a rich landscape that has not been flattened by representation. Enlivened through one’s imagination, the work is further heightened and lived as an internal experience.&nbsp; Vanishing Points&nbsp;is a chapter in the artist’s ongoing inquiry into the observer’s connection to their natural and built environment—a dialogue with resonance to the architectural heritage of Chicago, making this exhibition a fitting debut in the city.&nbsp;

But for the Tarble's 2nd Biennial flat file exhibition, visitors will be allowed and even encouraged to page through portfolios installed in the galleries. Each flat file drawer will contain artworks made by members of the Tarble community and organized into a neat portfolio collection of up to ten works. Winter Salon Exhibition

We’ll be staying warm for this January gallery walk by visiting four exhibition spaces located within the same building: Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Volume Gallery, Western Exhibitions, and Document Gallery.&nbsp; Beginning at Rhona Hoffman Gallery, one of Chicago’s premier spaces representing an array of internationally-recognized artists, we’ll explore a group show of four artists with Chicago connections. We’ll see unique and diverse works using a variety of mediums and materials, including Anne Wilson’s use of hair, Richard Rezac’s crafted sculptures, Julia Fish’s oil paintings based on music, and works on paper by the late feminist artist Nancy Spero. We’ll then make a stop at Volume Gallery to see This is Not a Plate, a collection of provocative art plates by Howard Kottler (1930-1989), before examining the idiosyncratic portraiture of Julia Schmitt Healy at Western Exhibitions. While viewing the artist’s work made of traditional materials combined with surprising elements like fiber and hair, we’ll discuss the concept of what makes an artwork a portrait.&nbsp; We conclude at Document Gallery with Exhibit B, a group exhibition of international artists who bend the use of traditional materials from photography to fiber to create patterns and shapes that reference the history of art, literature, and cultures. Included are artists Julien Creuzet, Natani Notah, John Opera, Tom Schneider, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Kazuhito Tanaka, and Claude Viallat. CSI is excited to welcome the public to CSI Project Space for “Little, but BOLD! CSI Member Benefit Art Auction,” an exhibition of small works at our member gallery space in Bucktown. On opening night, we will offer food, fun and fabulous art. There will be a live auction of 5 sculptures and a silent auction of over 30 sculptures. Buyers get to take art home that night! Little, but BOLD! is in celebration of all things un-monumental. Often flying under the radar, small things have the special ability to bridge private and public spaces. Within the sculpture field, there has been a projected narrative that bigger is better. We are here to assert that small things can hold the same importance as the largest monument. Charlotte Walsh is a painter and illustrator who lives in Chicago. She has been honing her skills&nbsp;as an oil painter for the past several years. Originally a college athlete, she began drawing and&nbsp;design classes at St. Norbert College. During the pandemic she furthered her studies at Palette&nbsp;&amp; Chisel Fine Art Academy to focus on oil painting. Her work focuses on pushing the boundaries&nbsp;of everyday life to create a world of escapism.&nbsp;Charlotte Walsh, painter “My subject matter is otherworldly places. I take simple objects or&nbsp;people and create a world full of imagination and movement. My work could be found outside in&nbsp;nature or in a fantasy world.
