In Defense of Beauty, an exhibition featuring mixed media works by Chicago artist Allison Svoboda, opens at OS Projects on February 8, 2025 and continues through April 12, 2025. The gallery will host a reception for the artist on Saturday, February 8, from 1 – 3 pm. Allison Svoboda’s artwork functions as an extended meditation on our natural environment. At OS Projects, Svoboda will be exhibiting two bodies of related work: “radical” plein air paintings the artist created at various locations in collaboration with bodies of water that are under threat, and torn paper installations from her Mandala series. Svoboda’s plein air paintings are an ode to the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River and their watersheds. Svoboda combined water from these sites with water-soluble pigments and exposed the work to water movement, wind and land-derived materials such as sand, salt and plant matter. Akin to automatism practiced by the Dadaists and Surrealists, the paintings are made in a sense from a “spirit hand,” as natural forces and materials are allowed to take over the surfacesof the works, imbuing them with the intrinsic character of the water and surrounding land. Like the plein air works, Svoboda’s Mandala series is influenced by organic forms and patterns (such as fractal geometry) and guided by both design and instinct. To create the works in the series, the artist first made hundreds of small paintings with thousands of brushstrokes, after which she collated the paintings, tore out images that align, then constructed from them a visually complex, wall-mounted collage of self-similar shapes. The paper’s ephemeral quality and rhythmic brushwork evoke a Buddhist mandala and encourage extended contemplation. Predicated on equal doses of inquiry and revelation, Svoboda’s artwork asks us to pay close attention to the dichotomy between destruction and growth that defines the natural world--as well as the fear, braided with wonder, that encapsulates our response to it. About the ArtistAllison Svoboda’s art practice exists on the edge between intuitive and deliberate mark making. Through paintings, sculpture and installations that are both ethereal and ominous, Svoboda highlights nature’s ability to regenerate, activate, and heal despite the damaged state of our environment. In 2015, she received the Hemera Fellowship to study Zen, calligraphy and shibori in Japan. This meditative practice and mark making continue to influence her work.Svoboda has shown her work at galleries, art centers and museums throughout the U.S. and abroad, including the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (Chicago, IL); Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago, IL); Walker Gallery (Denver, CO); K Imperial Gallery (San Francisco, CA); Olson-Larsen Galleries (Des Moines, IA); Fiskars Village (Finland); and Mingara Gallery (Australia). Beginner’s Mind: Walking a 45-million-year-old pathÓscar Faria&nbsp;Pedro Vaz’s exhibition&nbsp;Beginner’s Mind&nbsp;began long before he conceived it. One could say its origins trace back thirty-five years, to 1991, when Rui Calçada Bastos, then twenty years old, set out on a trek through the Indian Himalayas—an experience that later gave rise to the photographic series&nbsp;Paisagem para Desaparecidos II&nbsp;(“Landscape for the Disappeared II”, 2018). But its roots stretch even deeper, to the formation of the mountains themselves over 45 million years ago—peaks near Ladakh that have never ceased to shift and evolve. It’s a long story, that unfolds at the crossroads of geology and art, religion and landscape, humanity and nature. Pedro Vaz is a wanderer. His practice aligns with the tradition of&nbsp;land art, particularly echoing the work of British artists Hamish Fulton and Richard Long, who, since the 1960s, have traversed vast landscapes across the globe, distilling their journeys into works of profound poetic resonance. After encountering Rui Calçada Bastos’ 1991 photographs in 2018, Pedro Vaz set out to retrace the same path in 2022. New Friends: 9th Annual Cranbrook x SAIC Ceramics Exhibition

The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to welcome the public to Victoria Yau Retrospective. On April 5th, the Evanston Art Center will open an exhibition celebrating the works of the late Victoria Yau, a long-time resident of Evanston and one of the earliest Asian-American contemporary abstract artists. Born in Shanghai in 1939, Yau worked across a variety of media, including ink, watercolor, and multimedia collages. This exhibition will showcase a broad range of her works, highlighting her dedication to her craft. The exhibition will also coincide with the dedication of the Maker Lab for Digital Media room in her honor. In addition to being a prolific artist, Yau volunteered at the Evanston Art Center in the 1970s, contributing her time and talents to help further the center’s mission. Victoria Yau Retrospective will be exhibited in the Second Floor Main and Atrium Galleries of the Art Center. The opening reception is free and open to the public. In the series Spiritual Journey, Austin employs photography, layering multiple exposures and varied tone and color saturations to show a single, pivotal moment through multiple perspectives. In all of the images, a hand reaches forward, searching for something; perhaps nourishment of the soul, human touch, or the horizon... For some, the path is more clear, and for others, more foggy. This event showcases the talents of students from the Fine Arts program, with each year's entries being judged by guest jurors from the greater Chicagoland art community. In addition to showcasing the creative works of College of DuPage students, the exhibition also recognizes outstanding submissions with awards. 2025 Annual Student Exhibition

Artist Jordan Ann Craig’s (Northern Cheyenne) solo exhibition at The Block Museum is her largest institutional exhibition to date and her first in the Chicago area. Her large-scale abstract paintings reflect her engagement with Indigenous, especially Northern Cheyenne, aesthetic traditions and her dynamic and innovative exploration of color, line, and geometric form. Craig’s practice often begins with research in museum collections and archives—studying, learning from, and engaging in a dialogue with traditional Indigenous artistic forms, such as beadwork, pottery, and textiles. She also draws inspiration from the landscape of what is now the Southwestern United States, where she lives and works.&nbsp; The exhibition’s title,&nbsp;It takes a long time to stay here, comes from the poem "spinning air" by m.s. RedCherries (Northern Cheyenne), and evokes ideas of grounding and reflection. The exhibition invites a deep exploration of the seven paintings, shown together for the first time, highlighting the introspective quality of Craig’s work. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago today announced <a href="https://mcachicago.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c24ba7c5a91cefd699dc985e1&amp;id=b95b6e550d&amp;e=95b957c616">The Living End: Painting and Other Technologies, 1970–2020</a>, an international, intergenerational group exhibition opening on November 9, 2024, and running through April 13, 2025, in the Griffin Galleries of Contemporary Art. The exhibition examines the different methods artists have used to challenge or intervene in the practice of painting and the role of painters over the past 50 years. Countering the recycled discourse that “painting is dead,” the exhibition suggests that painting remains in a constant state of renewal and rebirth.The Living End considers the impact of various representational technologies and production methods, such as the use of video and still cameras; computers, the internet, and screens; automation; and the performing body. Comprising paintings, performance, video, and installation, the exhibition examines the ways artists working across media have challenged the mythologies of painting, ultimately changing our understanding of what constitutes a painting, how they can be produced, and who can be considered a painter. The Living End emphasizes a critical reading of painting, its tropes, its prominence in the Western canon, and its historical associations with privilege. As technology increases access to the means of production, the model of the painter as singular “genius” is being decentralized, opening abstract and representational painting to new perspectives.The exhibition surveys the early role of computers in painting and image production, following experiments with computer-assisted graphics in the mid-1960s, and connecting to the prevalence of screens and artists mining online digital and social media culture today. The Living End also examines the cyclical relationship between still photography and painting, as well as how video has allowed artists working in performance the possibility of critiquing the trajectory and status of painting. Lastly, the exhibition looks toward the automation of painting, where the artist’s hand is largely absent, complicating the role of artist as producer and the market’s enduring interest in painting as commodity. To be performed in the Museum atrium and throughout the galleries, Brendan Fernandes’s&nbsp;Moving Through&nbsp;is a site-specific work featuring six dancers whose movements will respond to a dynamic dance score composed collaboratively by students. Rather than a stationary performance, dancers will move through the Museum, allowing visitors to watch the fluid performance and come and go as they wish.&nbsp; Fernandes intends the work to dissolve the boundaries among visual art, dancers, and audience members. As the dancers search for specific works of art, they will pause, interact, and build relationships with each work of art while using gesture and movement as a form of communication. Though largely silent, the performance will be punctuated by sound. At times, the soundscape will become a cacophony of overlapping tones; at others, a call-and-response dialogue among dancers or a rhythmic interplay of sound will emerge and then disappear as they switch their radios on and off. These auditory moments will animate the space, providing tempo and rhythm for movement. By integrating movement, stillness, and sonic interplay, Fernandes reimagines the Museum as a living, breathing space where art and dance converge, challenging how we see, experience, and interpret both art forms.&nbsp; Brendan Fernandes is the 2025 Artist-in-Residence in the Notre Dame Initiative on Race and Resilience. The Real and Imagined:&nbsp;Evanston's Perspective Gallery's April 2025 Exhibition.&nbsp;&nbsp;Steve Geer&nbsp;presents On Chicago Streets, a group of 11 images of interactions between people and their environment on the streets of Chicago. These photographs do not feature special occasions or grand newsworthy events but show snippets of everyday life, scenes that are familiar and that we can identify with. As viewers we become like the photographer, flaneurs. We empathize with the strangers shown in the photographs and try to imagine ourselves in their shoes. Since the images present familiar interactions between people, they ultimately are about human nature and hence about us, the audience. Anthony Iacuzzi's&nbsp;exhibition of AI-augmented photography is titled Imaginings: Exploring the Intersection of Human and Machine. This exhibition presents a series of 15 diptychs, each juxtaposing an original photograph with its AI-augmented counterpart. The project delves into the evolving relationship between human creativity and artificial intelligence, exploring how these technologies can both enhance and challenge our perceptions of reality.By employing AI prompts and other tools within Photoshop, the artist has invited the "machine" to reimagine the visual world, offering unexpected interpretations and unforeseen aesthetic possibilities. The results are a blend of the familiar and the fantastical, where recognizable scenes are transformed by the software algorithm and the imagination of the artist.This exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the role of the artist in the age of AI. Is the human touch diminished or amplified by this collaboration? How do these augmented images challenge our understanding of authenticity and authorship?

Jordan Scott: Connections

At RAM’s Wustum Museum Now in its 58th year,&nbsp;Watercolor Wisconsin&nbsp;was started in 1966 to honor the depth and breadth of watercolor in the state. This year’s exhibition features 80 works by 69 artists from across Wisconsin. Jurors Tony Armendariz and Shelley Gilchrist considered 200 pieces submitted by 116 artists and curated the works seen in the 2024 exhibition. Armendariz is a contemporary realist artist living and painting in Palatine, Illinois. His work focuses on figurative subjects rendered in watercolor. Armendariz has won numerous awards in regional and national competitions and has exhibited his work in many group and solo exhibitions. Armendariz is a signature member of many national societies, including the American Watercolor Society and the Illinois Watercolor Society, where he also served as director. Gilchrist is an award-winning abstract artist based in Evanston, Illinois, working in two and three dimensions in a variety of media, including acrylic. In 2006, her work turned toward abstraction when she began to shape her painting surfaces and explore line and color in her designs. Gilchrist has juried shows at Woman Made Gallery and ARC Gallery in Chicago. She is a member of Chicago Sculpture International and the founder of FUSEDChicago, a professional group for artists using encaustic. Similar to previous years, Executive Director and Curator of Collections Bruce W. Pepich used memorial purchase award funds to obtain four works from this exhibition for RAM’s collection holdings. Thanks to generous donors over the years, and the ability to use specified funds to acquire work, RAM can count almost 600 watercolors as part of its works on paper collection.

A new show at the Kavanagh Gallery opens on March 27. It features art from 27 artists, many of them local. Items were required to meet a 16" x 16" or 16" x 16" x 16" display size to be included.&nbsp;Join us on Thursday, March 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. for our show opening. It will include talks by some of the artists attending and awards.
