Making an Impression: Immigrants  in Chicago's Print Industry

Artist Reception:&nbsp;Sunday, March 9, from 1–3pm in the Main Gallery at The Center for Visual and Performing ArtsSouth Shore Arts proudly presents the 6th Annual Works in Progress Pop-Up Exhibit, showcasing the talent of South Shore Arts students, instructors, staff, and members. This special exhibition features a diverse collection of works that highlight creativity, growth, and exploration in various mediums.

PATRON is proud to announce&nbsp;the other, our first solo exhibition with Chicago based artist Miao Wang (b. 1988). Wang’s materially committed practice honors a human, physical relationship to the passage, and reality of time. Working largely with materials that hold material connections to historical and contemporary Chinese aesthetic traditions, filtered through the Western monochromatic canon, Wang has developed a unique conceptual language of abstraction. In&nbsp;the other, Wang presents four distinct bodies of work, each representing the artist’s relationship, through repeated gesture, to notions of doubling, kindred beings, or, in her words, “an expression, and it's shadow.”&nbsp; Wang’s delicate watercolor paintings are developed through the repetitive physical engagement with sheets of synthetic YUPO paper, water, and pigment. The layers upon layers of nearly translucent washes, capture minute shifts within the physical conditions and environment of the studio, traces of dust, light, temperature and humidity. Documents of the artist’s experience with it and on it, the surfaces’ abstract marks evidence the environmental and physical conditions that impact the creative process, in the way that our bodies bear the residue of our memories and emotions.&nbsp; In the initial gallery, seven of Wang’s red watercolors form a serial grouping. Using layers of the same mixed pigment on mass-produced paper in predetermined sizes, subtle differences emerge across the paintings’ surfaces, calling attention to the minute details of individuality in each, such as the artist’s finger marks along the edges of the paintings, residue of her process. This communion of similarity and difference disperses in the next gallery, where Wang presents a complete grouping of diptychs– two paintings which are intended to be installed together–oppositionally across the gallery from each other. In producing these diptychs, Wang doubles her process, performing the same gesture twice. Each painting is unique, while echoing and negating the other’s uniqueness.&nbsp; the other&nbsp;coalesces with a series of watercolor paintings formed initially by two pooled black watercolor dots. Through a gentle bending of the YUPO paper, each pool runs across the surface into fragmented limb-like markings. Wang’s forms here begin with two fingerprint-like spots which bleed into the otherworldly, and the tenuous, capital “I” of the self. The tension between the self and the other culminates in a pair of monolithic cyanotypes on drywall panels, developed in ​​an outdoor environment by moonlight. Each surface reveals subtle differences of light, shadow, and atmosphere—distinct experiences within our shared cosmic time against the mass-produced world of language and architecture.&nbsp;

Vertical Gallery is very proud to present ‘We From the Heavens,’ a solo showcase for Chicago-born, Los Angeles-based painter and illustrator Troy Lee. ‘We From the Heavens,’ which runs March 7-29, heralds a daring new chapter in Lee’s career and creative evolution, shifting the artist’s emphasis from feminine sexuality to masculine vulnerability. The exhibit’s soul-baring paintings and sketches aggressively interrogate the perceptions and realities confronting Black men in contemporary America — how they’re seen in the media, and how they see themselves in the mirror.&nbsp; ‘We From the Heavens’ brings Lee back to Chicago five years after he left the city to live and work in southern California. The native South Sider drew incessantly throughout childhood, and at age 15 he signed up for a Little Black Pearl-sponsored after-school art program, studying under the tutelage of painter and muralist Hebru Brantley, a longtime mentor. Lee interned for Brantley while attending the Art Institute of Chicago, eventually dropping out to focus on his professional pursuits; a pair of local solo exhibits preceded his Vertical debut in 2021. He has since participated in multiple group shows at the gallery. Woman Made Gallery (WMG) is proud to present the 26th International Open.&nbsp;Juried by artist and educator, Savneet K Talwar, the selected works push material and conceptual boundaries, questioning personal and public spaces that women and gender non-binary artists navigate. Spanning painting, weaving, embroidery, sculpture, photography, collage, prints, and video, the exhibition includes works by 40 artists from across the United States and from China, Italy, Qatar, and the UK. "For my upcoming show, I’ll be presenting Tempest, which reflects the stages of a storm—three families of paintings that come together as a trinity. I’m painting on raw birch panels using watercolor and gouache. Letting natural forces like water, air, and gravity shape the work."

While very different in style and subject, their work is similar in the way that it develops. Their processes often include repetition and mimicry, which serve as ways to dig deeper into the meaning of what each artist is exploring in their art.&nbsp; Cho’s mixed media on paper work is meant to be a commentary on her Korean American heritage, celebrating earnest but humorous attempts to pay homage to her transnational upbringing. Peltier’s work, on the other hand, is focused on what she sees in the world around her. She alters and then rearranges what she observes as part of an open-ended exploration. While Peltier studied printmaking and works extensively in that medium, this body of work is her first foray into painting.&nbsp; ﻿We hope you will stop by to see this wonderful work during the month of March! Mongerson Gallery was pleased to host Tightwire: The Work of Harold Neal, a private exhibition showcasing a collection of Neal’s paintings spanning much of his career. Harold Neal (1924-1996) was a crucial figure in the Detroit Black Arts Movement. His paintings reflect both the beauty and tribulations of his life, illustrating the complexities of existence as a Black man in the United States. Neal remains one of the most important artists of twentieth century Detroit, with his work being shown this past summer at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. The exhibit gave a wide audience the opportunity to see Neal’s work up close in a more vibrant setting than the traditional white box gallery. Mongerson Gallery partnered with Cosentino City Chicago, Alexis Goettsch Photography, and Regiment Securities for the one-night event. This was a fantastic occasion to honor Neal's legacy, and we were so happy his family could join us to celebrate. Objet

In his first solo exhibition in Chicago, Los Angeles-based and Jamaican-born artist Cosmo Whyte situates the architectural archives of his late father as the structural ground for an intervention and interrogation into the spaces and forms of diasporic protest, spectacle, and witnessing. Presented by The Arts Club of Chicago, in The Mother’s Tongue, Pressed to the Grinding Stone the artist reformulates photojournalistic images onto materials ranging from drawings to hand-painted beaded curtains and steel framings of unrealized structures. In so doing, Whyte poetically asks “what makes a witness? And what does it mean to have become one?”&nbsp;Cosmo Whyte received a BFA from Bennington College, a post-baccalaureate at Maryland Institute College of Art, and a MFA from University of Michigan. In 2020 he had solo exhibitions at&nbsp;<a style="color: rgb(0, 124, 137);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://artsclubchicago.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=502da7c1672081e981f967563&amp;id=f2164fb43f&amp;e=e3c33543d7" target="_blank">MOCA Georgia</a>&nbsp;and ICA San Diego. Tandem Press is pleased to host&nbsp;Grabando Historias, a Master of Fine Arts Qualifier Exhibition by Christie Tirado, University of Wisconsin-Madison MFA Candidate and 2024-2025 Tandem Press Studio Project Assistant. Drawing from her own experience as the daughter of Mexican immigrants, Christie Tirado uses relief block printing to bring visibility to often overlooked narratives of immigrant families. Her work preserves personal and collective histories, capturing transnational migration stories while honoring the labor and sacrifices of those who have shaped communities across borders. Artist BiographyChristie Tirado is a Mexican American interdisciplinary artist and educator from Yakima, WA, currently residing in Madison, WI. As the daughter of immigrants, she navigates the complexities of her heritage, drawing inspiration from the rich tradition of relief block printing. Her work explores the impact of migration on culture, identity, traditions, memories, and histories, with a particular focus on labor-related migration within Mexican diasporas. Deeply rooted in personal familial histories, her practice reflects the resilience and lived experiences of her own family while also&nbsp;grabando&nbsp;both personal and collective narratives. Through cultural exploration and artistic practice, she sheds light on the layered narratives of migration and cultural (in)visibility.Tirado earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, and her Master’s in Teaching from Heritage University in Toppenish, WA. She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.Her accolades include the 2020 Larry Sommers Fellowship through Seattle Print Arts and the 2020 Golden Apple Award for innovative teaching in Washington State. She is also an Education Graduate Research Scholar&nbsp;at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her artwork has been exhibited and collected nationally in museums and galleries such as Davidson Galleries in Seattle, WA; San Francisco State University, CA; Sonoma State University, CA; The Sun Valley Museum of Art, ID; and La Productora Gráfica del Bosque in Oaxaca, Mexico, among others. Additionally, her work has been featured in prominent news outlets and magazines nationwide, including&nbsp;High Country News,&nbsp;ProPublica, and&nbsp;Crosscut.Previously, Tirado worked as an elementary and middle school art teacher in the Yakima Valley, WA, for eight years.
